Chapter 9 of 10
Harvest of the Pumpkin Lord

The hybrid beast's three heads, each snarling with needle-sharp fangs, tore towards the unripened gourd. Its lead serpentine head struck first, a blur of scales and venom, but a blur of rust-brown fur and muscle was faster. Khurun, the minotaur, let out a guttural roar that vibrated through the very bedrock. He had been promised a precisely timed dinner, and nothing, especially not some glorified lizard, was going to make him miss it. Not when he had already envisioned the crispness of Sullka’s ‘Crimson Comet’ beets.
[INAPPROPRIATE AGGRESSION! MINOTAUR BOSS KHURUN HAS INITIATED CLOSE-QUARTERS BRUTALITY!]
With a sound like colliding boulders, Khurun met the brute head-on. The serpentine neck coiled, attempting to snap at the gourd, but Khurun’s horned head whipped up, catching the central lion-like maw with a sickening crack. The minotaur’s hooves dug deep into the soil, tearing fresh gouges in the rich earth as he pushed back against the multi-headed monstrosity. The creature's horned goat head spat a concentrated burst of defoliant, but Khurun, surprisingly nimble for his bulk, twisted, presenting his scarred flank. The poison fizzed harmlessly against his hide, leaving only a faint scorch mark.
Sullka, watching from behind his still-withering ‘Gilded Bloom’ sunflowers, could almost hear Khurun thinking, *‘Not the gourd! My dinner depends on that gourd!’*
Meanwhile, Nayra, her body aching from the lightning strike, pushed through the lingering haze of pain. Vario’s cackle still echoed, and the sight of her mentor, Sullka, cowering behind a wilting sunflower fueled a cold fury she rarely allowed to surface. She was an assassin. Assassins dealt with threats, not cowered from them.
Her legs, though protesting, carried her. The barge’s defenses were still up, crackling with arcane energy, but the mages were focused on powering the corruption engine, their concentration fractured by the ongoing chaos. Nayra saw her opening. She used the crumpled forms of stunned Bloodfang Guild hunters as stepping stones, a blur of dark fabric against the sickly green sky. Her remaining two daggers – plain steel, for her enchanted ones were shattered – gleamed in the dim light.
She moved with a silent, deadly grace, a phantom in the fray. One mage, distracted by Khurun’s ongoing wrestling match, dropped. Another, his eyes glazed with the effort of channeling the siphon array, never even saw her. With swift, precise movements, she dismantled the outer layer of the barge’s magical wards. The remaining mages spun around in panic, but it was too late. She was already among them, a dancer of death, steel edges finding the gaps in their hastily conjured shields.
[ASSASSIN’S FURY! NAYRA HAS TERMINATED THE BARGE’S PROTECTIVE ENFORCERS!]
Vario, momentarily distracted by the sight of his mages falling like dominoes, shrieked. “You insolent peasant! Do you know who I am?!”
Nayra didn’t answer. She was a silent storm. In a heartbeat, she was behind him, dual edges pressed against his throat, one just above his jugular, the other resting against his carotid artery. The metal was cool against his clammy skin. He froze, his triumphant cackle replaced by a choked gasp.
“Call off the decay,” Nayra’s voice was a low, dangerous whisper, devoid of her usual stoicism. “Now.”
Vario’s eyes, bulging with terror, darted to the pulsating Core, still thrumming with malevolent power. A sickly green beam, thick as a serpent, screamed from its heart, arcing towards Sullka’s dying farm. The last tendrils of life were being sucked dry. The air itself felt thin, brittle.
“I… I can’t!” Vario stammered, sweat beading on his forehead. “It’s… fully engaged! It’s self-sustaining! It will only stop once all life is consumed!”
Nayra pressed the steel a fraction deeper, a thin line of red appearing on Vario’s neck. “Then you die first.”
Sullka, seeing Nayra’s desperate stand, seeing the farm shriveling, felt something inside him snap. It wasn't the panic of a botanist, but the raw, unadulterated fury of a farmer watching his life’s work perish. His prized squash, his cabbages, his precious cross-pollinated cultivars – all turning to dust. Nayra, his… his *farmhand*, bleeding and fighting for *him*. The necrotic beam was an affront to everything he stood for. It was messing with his crop rotation on a grand, cosmic scale. And that, he decided, was simply unacceptable.
He stormed towards the sovereign vine, which, despite the defoliant's draining effects, still pulsed with a faint, defiant orange glow. The last three agonizing minutes had passed. Its skin had deepened to a rich, burnished gold, a perfect specimen of botanical power. It was ready.
He reached it, his powerful fingers closing around the thick stem. The blackened vine crackled as he twisted. With a primal roar that surprised even himself, a sound more fitting for the warlord he inhabited than the botanist he was, he ripped the colossal gourd free.
[THE HARVEST IS COMPLETE! THE IMPERIAL FRUIT HAS BEEN PLUCKED!]
[THE DOOMSDAY SQUASH HAS BEEN HARVESTED! PREPARE FOR SEED DISPERSAL!]
The System’s booming voice seemed to falter, a momentary glitch in its usual bloodthirsty pronouncements. But Sullka barely registered it. His eyes, usually filled with gentle concern, were blazing with a singular, terrifying focus. He hoisted the massive gourd, a truly unbelievable feat of strength that made the very ground groan. The gourd, easily the size of a small carriage, felt weightless in his hands, charged with an almost painful vibrancy.
The apparatus's green beam, a tendril of death, bore down on the struggling farm. It was now or never.
With a furious bellow, Sullka took aim. His body, the warlord’s body, coiled. He didn’t think; he simply acted, driven by pure, unadulterated botanical rage. He swung, a human catapult, and hurled the entire, ripe Emperor squash with all his immense strength directly into the screaming, green beam of the Core.
The collision was instantaneous. A blinding flash of verdant light erupted, swallowing the Core’s malevolent green and expanding outwards, a supernova of pure, unbridled growth. Vibrant, emerald energy surged across the entire Zenith. The air crackled with an overwhelming, almost suffocating sweetness, and the ground trembled as if the very Ziggurat were groaning.
