Chapter 1 of 10

Blood-Soaked Spuds

1.3k words

The wind tore through Sullka’s tattered lab coat, a shriek more piercing than his own as the world blurred into a vertigo-inducing smear of grey clouds and jagged stone. He was falling. Not a gentle tumble from a ladder, but a full-force, gut-wrenching plunge from the heavens, directly toward the rumored apex of the Qullu Ziggurat. Panic clawed at his throat, a primal, unscientific terror. He was Dr. Sullka, a botanist who once obsessed over soil pH and fungal spores, not a human projectile. His last memory was a lab accident involving a particularly aggressive strain of nutrient-rich algae and a dimensional rift — a common occupational hazard, perhaps, but certainly not a precursor to freefall from a floating mountain. He braced, or rather, flailed. His eyes, now set deep within a brow that felt far too heavy and scarred, squeezed shut. The impact was coming. Any second now, his meek, terrestrial form would spatter across the Zenith Terrace like an overripe tomato. Instead, a peculiar thud, cushioned and firm, reverberated through him. He landed not on stone, but on something warm, yielding, and utterly colossal. A distinct scent of ozone, sweat, and something vaguely metallic filled his nostrils. His eyes snapped open. He was sprawled across a mountain of muscle, a living canvas of swirling, intricate tattoos that seemed to pulse with a faint, internal light. This was not his body. He scrambled upright, his limbs moving with an unfamiliar, terrifying power. He looked down at himself: towering, bronzed, every muscle a sculpted peak. His hands, broad and calloused, bore the same complex ink as the body he’d just… crashed into. He was the body. Or, this body was him. His mind, still fixated on his tiny greenhouse back on Earth, struggled to reconcile the image of a gentle man who nurtured rare orchids with the hulking, battle-scarred figure now standing on the precipice of a cloud-piercing pyramid. He felt an immense, thrumming energy under his skin, a raw, untamed strength. [MIGHTY CATACLYSM OF MEAT! A NEW BLOODLORD HAS DESCENDED UPON THE ZENITH TERRACE!] [PREPARE FOR THE SLAUGHTER! MONSTER SPAWN INITIATED!] The voice boomed from everywhere and nowhere, a disembodied, roaring presence that rattled the very air. Sullka staggered back, a gasp of pure horror escaping his new, booming lungs. The clouds directly before him churned, coagulating into a swirling vortex of shadow and crackling energy. From its depths, a figure emerged, easily twice Sullka’s new, imposing height. It was a beast of crimson fur and granite-hard muscle, its head that of a bull, broad horns curving outward like obsidian scythes. Its eyes, burning coals in the gloom, fixed on Sullka with murderous intent. The system bellow had named it: Khurun, an apex bull-beast of the heights. Sullka, despite his new form, felt the familiar prickle of fear. This was not a wilting philodendron. This was a sentient, enraged beefcake with an axe. Khurun let out a roar that vibrated Sullka’s bones, then charged, stone shuddering under thunderous hooves. The beast swung a colossal, notched greataxe, a weapon easily the size of Sullka’s old gardening shed. Instinct, raw and unthinking, took over. Sullka didn’t duck; he met the charge. With a grunt that surprised even himself, a sound far too guttural and powerful to be his own, Sullka sidestepped the axe, grabbed one of Khurun’s thick horns, and twisted. The bull-man bellowed, thrown off balance. Sullka, fueled by an unknown, desperate strength, wrapped an arm around the beast’s thick neck, pinning it into an iron clamp that would have snapped the spine of any lesser creature. Khurun thrashed, its hooves tearing gouges in the volcanic soil, but Sullka held fast, his new muscles screaming in protest, yet refusing to yield. Sweat stung his temples, alongside a sudden, prickly irritation. This was wrong. This was so, so wrong. But the monster was getting dirt in his eyes. “Stop wriggling, you overgrown bovine!” Sullka roared, his voice a gravelly boom that startled even himself. He saw something glinting half-buried in the ashen dirt – a rusted, heavy iron draught-collar, clearly a relic of some forgotten siege engine. Without thinking, he dragged his struggling opponent toward it, fumbling with the thick leather straps and heavy buckles. Khurun, momentarily stunned by the sheer audacity of being grappled by its supposed prey, only resisted half-heartedly as Sullka, with surprisingly deft movements for such a hulking frame, managed to latch the tackle around its broad chest. [AN UNPRECEDENTED ACT OF DOMINATION! THE BLOODLORD ENSLAVES THE APEX BEAST, KHURUN!] [A NEW AGE OF ATROCITY BEGINS! YOUR ENEMIES TREMBLE!] Sullka ignored the booming voice. The horned giant, now tethered to… nothing, just standing there, huffing, seemed less enraged and more bewildered. Its burning eyes still held a spark of fury, but it was mixed with a strange, almost comical confusion. Sullka stared at the enormous, snorting beast. He had just dragged a legendary dungeon boss into a chokehold and strapped working leather on it. What in the blazes was he supposed to do now? Execute it? He couldn’t. He was a botanist. He nurtured life, not ended it. “Look, I’m sorry about the scuffle,” Sullka mumbled, reaching a hand into the folds of his new warlord robes. He felt a familiar, comforting texture – firm, leafy. He pulled it out. A perfect, vibrant green cabbage, dewy with fresh moisture, impossibly summoned from the ether. His Earth cabbage. He must have pulled it from his pocket dimension, a convenient ability this body apparently possessed. “You seemed a bit… peckish. Here.” Khurun eyed the offering. Its nostrils flared, taking in the scent of crisp, green vitality. It lowered its heavy head, fiery gaze softening slightly, and with a surprisingly delicate movement of thick lips, took the cabbage. The crunch echoed across the open arena. Khurun chewed, slowly, thoughtfully, its crimson eyes closing in what looked suspiciously like contentment. A low rumble emanated from its chest, a sound far less threatening than its previous roars. It looked up at Sullka, then nudged the basalt flags with its snout, an almost hopeful expression on its bovine face. Sullka blinked. “You… want to till?” Khurun let out another low rumble, then pushed its head against the unused straps, gazing meaningfully at the untouched volcanic ash that stretched across the flagstones. It pawed at the grey loam, then looked back at Sullka, an undeniable plea in its glowing eyes. Sullka sighed, running a hand through his now-too-long, dark hair. He had a dungeon terror who wanted to farm. This was beyond absurd. But the volcanic ash *was* incredibly fertile, and a good tilling would do wonders for aeration. It would be perfect for pumpkins. He began to unclip the buckle, a plan forming in his mind. He’d need to adapt it, of course, maybe add a plowshare. Khurun watched him, a slow, happy wag of its thick tail sending puffs of ash into the air. Sullka smiled, a genuine, if bewildered, smile. This wasn’t so bad. A quiet life, a new patch of soil, and an ox the size of a hayrick for a tractor. What could possibly go wrong? High above, a shadow detached itself from the swirling clouds, dropping with the silent grace of a predatory bird. Two daggers, obsidian-dark and dripping with a faint, iridescent sheen, emerged from slender, gloved hands, their tips aligned perfectly with the broad, exposed nape of Sullka’s neck. The descent was flawless, utterly lethal, and aimed to end the warlord’s existence before he even planted his first seed.
