Chapter 10 of 10
Starlight and Scarf Knots

The world screamed. Not with a sound, but with the tearing of reality itself. Great, gaping wounds of amethyst light spiraled skyward from the collapsing ruins of the ancient void-prison, swallowing stone and air with equal hunger. Above, the proud spires of the terraced tiers listed precariously, shedding their glass facades like brittle scales. A terrible, rhythmic groan echoed from the deep, the very foundations of the city giving way. The void, a hungry maw of cosmic indifference, erupted from the earth, reaching for the stars, for the essence of everything.
Vondir stood at the nexus of this devastation, a dark god framed by the apocalyptic light. His eyes, devoid of their usual soft hue, burned with a cold, annihilating fire that saw only the unmaking of existence. There was no recognition in them, no memory of warmth, no echo of the boy Rhenna had fought so fiercely to shield. He was the Calamity, unleashed and unbound, a force of nature driven by the echoes of a thousand traumas.
Flee. That was the instinct. Fight. That was the brawler’s ingrained command. But Rhenna did neither. Her gaze, though hollow with grief, held a stubborn defiance. She saw the void devouring the city, the leylines fracturing, the end of everything. And she saw Vondir, her Vondir, lost within it.
Her hand closed around the smooth, cool stone of the transmigration artifact in her pocket—the final key, the one true path back to the life she’d been ripped from. It offered escape, oblivion, a forgotten memory of this nightmare. Her thumb pressed down, then her palm clenched, and with a sharp, grating *crack*, the stone crumbled to dust across her knuckles. A faint, almost imperceptible tremor ran through the fabric of reality, a sigh of finality, then faded. There was no going back. Not now. Not ever.
“No,” Rhenna breathed, the word a fierce prayer against the roar of the void. “Not like this.”
She walked. One step, then another, directly into the tearing maw of the void that pulsed around Vondir. The air howled, attempting to rip her apart, to crush her. The crushing pressure of unmade space bore down, seeking to unravel her marrow. But Rhenna pushed through, her body aching, her will an iron bar against the encroaching darkness. She fixed her sight solely on Vondir’s vacant stare.
“Vondir!” Her voice was raw, stripped bare of all pretense, of all the prickly pride. “Look at me!”
He didn't. The void pulsed, expanding, a silent hunger reaching for her. She was almost upon him, the tendrils of darkness brushing her cloak, pulling at her hair. He was taller now, an ethereal shadow, his form shifting at the edges. Too far, too lost. Her heart ached, a physical wound in her chest.
With a harsh, guttural cry, Rhenna lunged. Her hand shot out, not to strike, but to grab. Her grip locked onto the front of his tunic, the fabric surprisingly substantial despite his spectral presence. His form wavered, a ripple through the darkness, as she pulled with all her might. The force of her sudden action, the sheer, unexpected physicality of it, dragged his head down, bringing his face level with hers.
“You idiot!” she choked out, tears finally blurring her vision, burning tracks down her grimy cheeks. “You absolute, beautiful, broken idiot!”
Then, she kissed him. Fierce, relentless, undeniable. Her lips, chapped and bruised, pressed against his, tasting of salt, ash, and copper. It wasn't gentle; it was a demand, a ragged plea, a lifeline thrown across an abyss. It carried every withheld word, every protective impulse, every moment she’d refused to admit how much he meant to her. It was the crushing of her artifact, the surrender of her past, the anchor of her present, all poured into that single reckless act.
For a breath, nothing. The void raged. The city groaned. Then, a shudder. A tremor that ran not through the ground, but through Vondir himself. His eyes, fixed on nothingness a moment before, seemed to *see* her. A spark, faint but undeniable, ignited in their depths, banishing the hollow emptiness.
His body bucked. The void around them, once a hungry maw, began to recede, to convulse, to *change*. It didn't vanish; it transformed. The consuming purple blackness fractured into a million motes of shimmering, iridescent light. These weren’t the dark, unstable energies of destruction, but pure, ethereal starlight, raining down in a gentle, purifying shower. They drifted like cosmic snow, catching on Rhenna’s hair, settling on her cloak, dissolving the lingering shadows on the crumbling stone.
Vondir collapsed. Not into the void, but into Rhenna’s arms, a dead weight. The colossal, world-ending power that had threatened to devour the upper rings vanished, leaving behind a boy, trembling and small, just as she’d found him. His face, no longer pale with abyssal power, was wet with tears. He buried his face in her shoulder, sobbing, a raw, wrenching sound that tore through Rhenna’s heart.
“Rhenna…” he whimpered, his voice fragile, broken, utterly human. “I… I hurt you. I almost… I almost…”
She held him tighter, cradling his head against her, stroking his hair. The starlight fell around them, illuminating the remnants of the broken leyline chamber, but the world was still. The groaning had stopped. The city, though scarred, still stood.
“Shh,” she murmured, her own voice thick with emotion. “It’s okay. You’re okay. We’re okay.”
Months later, the tavern of the Wandering Wyrm, painstakingly rebuilt stone by stone, buzzed with life. The scent of spiced ale and sizzling stew filled the air, mingling with the sweet strains of a lute. Puckio, resplendent in a new, even more flamboyant tunic, perched on a stool, his voice ringing through the room, weaving tales of daring deeds and impossible rescues.
“...and the Brawler Queen, with a heart of tempered steel and fists of pure fury, faced down the encroaching void itself! She stood as the unyielding bulwark against the shadows! A kiss, they say, of fire and grace, broke the Calamity’s hold, saving our beloved city from utter ruin! Hear ye, hear ye, to Rhenna, the Brawler Queen!”
Rhenna, seated at a corner table, rolled her eyes at Puckio’s dramatics, a familiar warmth spreading through her chest. Beside her, Vondir, looking healthier than she'd ever seen him, blushed fiercely, tugging self-consciously at the scarf wrapped around his neck. The scarf, a gift from Rhenna, was a surprisingly vibrant emerald green.
“Honestly, Puckio,” Rhenna grumbled, though a faint smile touched her lips. “You make it sound like I single-handedly wrestled a sunbeam.” She reached over, her movements brusque but gentle, and adjusted the knot of Vondir’s scarf. “Honestly, how many times do I have to tell you? You tie it like you’re trying to strangle yourself.”
Vondir merely offered a shy smile, his cheeks still flushed, and leaned into her touch. His hand, warm and steady, found hers beneath the table, twining with hers.
She squeezed his knuckles, her gaze sweeping across the lively tavern, the familiar faces, the hum of contentment. The Terraced City of Ghelira, once a prison, then a battlefield, now felt… like home. The thought, once unthinkable, settled into her soul with a quiet certainty. She was still prickly, still prone to harsh words, but the deep compassion she’d masked for so long now shone brighter. Her goal had changed. It wasn’t about leaving anymore. It was about staying.
“You know,” Rhenna said, her voice barely a murmur, meant only for him, “Puckio might exaggerate, but… he’s not entirely wrong about the choosing part.” She turned her head, meeting Vondir’s earnest gaze, and for the first time, she said the words out loud, letting them settle between them like a promise. “I’m exactly where I belong.”
