Julian pushed away from the desk, his movements sharp, almost aggressive. The air crackled with unspoken tension, thick and suffocating. Lyra watched him, her heart a frantic bird in her ribs, the echoes of his earlier demands still ringing in her ears.
"No more lies," he had said. His gaze had been a brand, searing away any lingering doubts about his conviction.
Now, his focus narrowed. The rage that had simmered moments ago, directed at her, had solidified into something colder, deadlier, aimed squarely at Silas.
"Silas Vance," Julian articulated, the name a venomous hiss. "He thinks he's untouchable. He's about to learn how wrong he is."
Lyra straightened her shoulders. Her own fear for herself paled in comparison to the resolve that hardened her features. "He’s meticulous. Everything is buried deep. He covers his tracks, Julian. It’s not going to be easy."
"Nothing worth fighting for ever is," Julian countered, turning to face her fully. His eyes, though still guarded, held a flicker of something she hadn't seen in days: a shared purpose. "You know his methods. You know his vulnerabilities. That's our advantage."
Lyra considered this, a chilling thought dawning. "I was a pawn in his game. I saw things. Heard things. But never the full picture. He always kept me compartmentalized."
"We piece it together," Julian stated, moving to a large monitor on the wall, bringing up a complex network of financial data and corporate structures. "Every shell company, every offshore account, every suspicious acquisition."
"His real estate dealings are often opaque," Lyra offered, stepping closer, her voice gaining strength. "He uses proxies to buy up distressed properties, especially those with environmental issues, then leverages political connections to get zoning changes or clean-up funds."
Julian's brow furrowed. "That aligns with what my team has been unearthing. A pattern of resource acquisition, often at the expense of local communities, followed by massive redevelopment profits."
