Chapter 40: The Truth, Finally

948 words

A tremor ran through Amelia’s hands. She sat across from Rhys in his private study, the heavy oak door a barrier against the chaotic world outside. Her parents were safe, resting in a secure medical facility, but the relief was a fragile thing, overshadowed by the confession she knew she had to make. His gaze, usually sharp and direct, was softened by concern, unwavering on her. “Amelia?” His voice was a low rumble, gentle, yet laced with an unspoken urgency. He reached across the polished surface, his fingers brushing hers, sending a jolt through her. Swallowing hard, she pulled her hand back instinctively, a fresh wave of guilt washing over her. She couldn’t accept his comfort yet. Not until he knew everything. “Rhys,” she began, her voice a reedy whisper, barely her own. “There’s… there’s something I need to tell you. Everything.” His eyes narrowed, not in anger, but in anticipation. He leaned forward, giving her his full, undivided attention. “Arthur Thorne,” she said, the name a bitter taste on her tongue. It was a dam breaking. “He came to me, ten years ago. Right after… right after you proposed.” Rhys flinched. The memory of that night, the joy, the devastation, was etched into them both. “He knew about my father’s past, about Alistair’s embezzlement from his family’s company. He had proof. Irrefutable proof that would send my father to prison for decades, ruin my family, destroy everything we had.” Her breath hitched. She saw the shock register on Rhys’s face, a slow comprehension dawning. “Thorne gave me a choice,” she continued, each word a shard of glass. “Ruin Alistair, expose his past, and save my parents. Or… or break your heart and leave you at the altar.” His knuckles whitened where his hands rested on his knees. He absorbed her words, a muscle ticking in his jaw. “He wanted to hurt you, Rhys. He wanted to destroy your reputation, your company. He saw you as Alistair’s protégé, his legacy. He said if I married you, with my father’s secret hanging over us, he’d expose everything. He’d frame it as a manipulation, a calculated deceit to merge our families and cover up the scandal. He’d ruin us all.” Amelia squeezed her eyes shut, reliving the terror. “He wanted me to make you walk away from Alistair. To sever ties completely. But even that wasn’t enough. He wanted me to hurt you personally, to ensure the pain ran deep, to make an example.” She looked at him, her eyes pleading for understanding. “I tried to find another way. I begged him. I offered him everything I had. But he was relentless. He said he had waited years for this opportunity. He wanted vengeance, and I was just a pawn.” “My parents,” she whispered, tears finally escaping. “He threatened them. He said he’d make sure they paid for Alistair’s mistakes. That they’d lose everything, including their freedom.” “I couldn’t,” she choked out. “I couldn’t let that happen. Not to them. I had to choose. And the only way I saw to protect them, to keep Thorne from ruining my entire family, was to… to do what he asked. To leave you. To make you hate me.” She watched him, searching for any sign of his reaction, but his face was unreadable, a mask of controlled shock. “Every single day,” she pressed on, desperate for him to understand the depth of her agony. “Every single day for ten years, I’ve lived with that choice. Watching you from afar, seeing your success, hearing the whispers of your pain… it killed me. It was a torture I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy.” “And the thought that you hated me, that you thought I was cold, ambitious, uncaring… it was a weight I carried alone. I couldn’t tell anyone. Thorne warned me if I ever breathed a word, he’d make good on his threats.” Her voice cracked. “He came back recently. He used my parents again. He manipulated me into signing away my share of Alistair’s company to him. He wanted more control, more leverage against you.” “It was always about you, Rhys. Always about destroying you. And I was just… I was just the weapon he used.” Reaching across, she finally grabbed his hand, her grip desperate. “But I never stopped loving you. Not for a single second. Even when I had to push you away, even when I saw the hurt in your eyes, my love for you never wavered. It was the one thing he couldn’t take from me.” Rhys’s breath hitched. He closed his eyes for a long moment, his chest heaving. When he opened them, the raw pain there made her own heart ache. “Ten years,” he murmured, his voice rough, barely above a whisper. “Ten years I believed… I believed you chose ambition over me. That I wasn’t enough.” He pulled his hand free, running it through his hair, his movements agitated. “I built an empire out of spite, Amelia. Out of a desperate need to prove myself, to prove you wrong. Every deal, every acquisition, every late night… it was all to bury the pain, to forget the girl who shattered me.” “I hated you,” he admitted, his eyes burning into hers. “I truly believed you were a cold, calculated woman. And then I’d see you, just a glimpse, and that hate would turn to longing, to confusion. I couldn’t reconcile the woman I loved with the one who walked away.” He stood, pacing the small space in front of the fireplace, his broad shoulders hunched. “I carried that bitterness, that profound sense of betrayal, like a physical weight. I swore I’d never let anyone get close again. I built walls so high, no one could ever reach me.” Pausing, he turned to face her, his gaze intense, filled with a decade of unspoken agony. “And all this time, you were carrying something even heavier. Alone. Tortured by his threats, forced into an impossible choice, watching me suffer, unable to explain.” A deep, shuddering breath escaped him. “The fear… the fear that I’d been wrong about everything, that our past was a lie, that *you* were a lie… it consumed me. And now… now I know the truth, and the weight of that truth is almost unbearable.” He ran a hand over his face, his expression a mixture of profound sorrow and dawning, terrifying hope. “Can we ever truly heal from this, Amelia? Can we ever put back together the pieces of what we lost, after so much pain, so much time?”
