Chapter 35 of 50
Chapter 35: A Darker Purpose
778 words
A tremor ripped through the already unstable structure. Dust billowed, thick and choking, as the groaning timbers shifted above them. Amelia’s hand, still resting on Rhys’s cheek, pressed harder, an instinctive reaction to the crumbling world around them.
Rhys’s arm instinctively wrapped around her waist, pulling her closer against his side. His gaze swept the confined space, searching for the source of the intensified shaking.
Beneath them, the floor gave a sickening lurch. A section of the ornate marble, directly under where they’d been pinned, splintered with a sharp crack.
Amelia gasped, pointing. “Look!”
Just beneath the shattered marble, a dark cavity had appeared. It wasn't the natural collapse of the earth; this was a deliberate void, hinting at something hidden.
Rhys narrowed his eyes. The opening was small, jagged, but distinctly man-made. He pushed against a loosened stone with his foot. It dislodged, tumbling into the darkness with a muffled thud.
Pulling himself free from the debris pinning his leg, Rhys carefully edged towards the new hole. He peered down, using the faint light filtering from above. A metallic gleam caught his eye.
“A vault,” he murmured, his voice tight. “Or a safe room.”
Amelia crawled beside him, wincing as she shifted her weight. “Who would put a vault *here*? In Blackwood Manor?”
“Someone who didn't want it found easily,” Rhys replied, his mind already racing. He tested the edges of the opening, looking for a way to widen it. The collapse had done half the work for them.
With a grunt, he braced his shoulders against a heavy beam. He pushed, muscles straining, dislodging more debris. The opening expanded, revealing a dark, steel door set into the earth.
Reaching in, Rhys felt along the cold metal. There was no visible handle, no obvious keypad. His fingers brushed against a faint indentation.
“It’s a biometric lock,” he announced, frustration lacing his tone. “Probably tied to Blackwood’s prints.”
Amelia’s mind clicked. “What if… what if The Collector forced him to set it up? Or acquired his biometrics?”
Rhys paused. “Possible. But we don’t have them.” He pounded a fist against the steel. The door held firm.
Suddenly, another rumble vibrated through the ground, more violent this time. A shower of dust and small rocks rained down from the ceiling.
“The manor won’t hold much longer,” Amelia urged. “Is there any other way?”
Rhys surveyed the fractured marble and stone around the door. “Maybe the collapse weakened the surrounding structure enough.” He found a thick, bent rebar among the rubble.
Bracing the rebar, he jammed its end into a crack between the vault door frame and the crumbling wall. He leveraged it, gritting his teeth, putting all his weight and power into the effort.
Metal shrieked against stone. A groan echoed from within the hidden space. Slowly, painfully, a section of the wall around the door buckled inwards. The biometric lock, still intact, snapped off with a sickening crunch.
Rhys pulled back, breathing heavily. The vault door, no longer securely anchored, swung inward with a faint creak, revealing a dark, musty interior.
Inside, the air was stagnant, heavy with the scent of old paper and dust. Rhys pulled out his phone, its flashlight beam cutting through the gloom. The small room was packed with file cabinets, stacked boxes, and a sturdy table.
Amelia felt a cold prickle of unease. This wasn’t just a hideout. This was a command center, a nerve center.
Rhys moved quickly, heading straight for the steel cabinets. He yanked open the top drawer. It was filled, not with money, but with documents. Thick binders, loose files, old photographs.
Amelia's fingers trembled as she pulled a yellowed file from a box. “Rhys, look at this.”
Her breath hitched. The document was an ancient ledger, meticulously detailing transactions, dates, and names. But it wasn't a standard ledger; it listed companies, not individuals, and the figures were astronomical.
Rhys's eyes scanned the papers in his hand. “These aren't just Blackwood’s debts. These are… something else.” His jaw tightened, a muscle jumping in his cheek.
The papers weren't about money owed by Blackwood to The Collector. They were records of past business dealings, legal battles, corporate takeovers. And many of them bore the logo of a familiar, powerful entity.
Old photographs spilled from another file. Images of stern-faced men in suits, architectural blueprints, newspaper clippings detailing corporate mergers and acquisitions from decades past.
A name jumped out at Amelia from one of the newspaper headlines: *Atlas Industries*. Her gaze snapped to Rhys. His family’s legacy. His father’s life work.
His family’s legacy. His father’s life work. His family's name, emblazoned across countless documents, some dating back nearly a century.
