Chapter 41: The Trap is Set

948 words

Clicking softly, the miniature camera lens adjusted. Adrian’s fingers, steady despite the tremor in his gut, secured the device beneath the conference table. Wires, thinner than hair, snaked along the dark metal frame, connecting to a hidden recorder. Clara checked the sound levels, her eyes glued to the small monitor. A green bar pulsed, confirming the audio feed was clear. They had chosen an abandoned corporate office, a shell of its former self. Dust motes danced in the slivers of light piercing through grimy windows. Perfect for their purpose. No prying eyes, no unexpected interruptions. “Everything’s synced,” Clara murmured, her voice tight with anticipation. Her gaze flickered to Adrian. “Are you ready?” Adrian nodded, a muscle twitching in his jaw. “As I’ll ever be.” Their plan was meticulously crafted, born from sleepless nights and a shared, burning need for justice. Adrian’s intimate knowledge of his uncle’s network and Clara’s recent experiences provided the perfect leverage. First, securing Leo. A trusted nanny, arranged by Adrian’s loyal personal assistant, had taken their son to a remote, undisclosed location. A private jet stood ready for immediate departure if anything went wrong. His son’s safety was paramount. Nothing else mattered more. Now, the bait. Adrian had leaked carefully doctored financial reports, hinting at a new, incredibly lucrative but highly illegal venture. It was designed to appear vulnerable, a golden goose ripe for the taking, but only if the 'investor' acted swiftly and secretly. Greed, Adrian knew, was his uncle’s primary weakness. It always had been. Calling the private number, Adrian kept his voice level. “Uncle Julian. I have something… urgent to discuss.” Julian’s voice, raspy and arrogant, came through the speaker. “Urgent? After all this time, you finally decide to crawl back?” “It involves a significant opportunity,” Adrian continued, ignoring the taunt. “Something only you would appreciate. We need to meet. Alone.” He painted a picture of a desperate Adrian, on the run, looking for a way back into the family’s good graces, offering a lucrative deal as a peace offering. Julian scoffed. “You think I’m stupid? This sounds like a trap.” “It could be,” Adrian conceded, a calculated risk. “Or it could be a chance to secure a fortune beyond your wildest dreams, with my full cooperation. I have the contacts, the information… I just need a partner who understands discretion.” Silence stretched, thick with Julian’s calculating thoughts. Adrian knew the man. Julian thrived on control and secret dealings. The allure of easy money, combined with the chance to finally corner his defiant nephew, would be irresistible. “Where?” Julian finally asked, a predatory edge to his tone. Adrian gave the address of the abandoned office. “Tomorrow. Noon. No bodyguards. Just us.” “Fine,” Julian grunted. “But if this is a trick, Adrian…” His voice trailed off, a clear threat implied. Adrian ended the call, his hand trembling slightly. He looked at Clara, who offered a small, reassuring smile. Hours later, the room was set. The hidden cameras were tested one last time. Microphones were everywhere, tucked into light fixtures, behind curtain rods, even a seemingly innocuous potted plant. Clara sat at a makeshift control station in an adjoining, darkened room. Her fingers hovered over the recording interface. Adrian waited in the main conference room. His heart pounded a relentless rhythm against his ribs. He pictured Leo’s face, a powerful anchor in the storm of his nerves. Footsteps echoed faintly from the corridor. “He’s here,” Clara whispered through the earpiece. Adrian straightened, his posture radiating a false calm. He took a deep, steadying breath, preparing for the performance of his life. The door swung open, revealing Julian Thorne. His expensive suit seemed out of place in the derelict office. A faint smirk played on his lips, his eyes gleaming with a mixture of suspicion and triumph. He glanced around the empty room, his gaze sweeping over the dusty surfaces, missing every single hidden eye and ear. Utterly oblivious. “Well, well, Adrian,” Julian drawled, closing the door behind him. “Look at the desperate prodigal son.” He settled into the chair opposite Adrian, folding his hands. His smug expression was a mask of self-assurance, unaware of the digital net tightening around him. The trap was sprung. All they needed now was for him to talk.
