Chapter 35: The Master Manipulator
913 words
A cold dread settled in Clara's stomach. Leo's words echoed, 'He knows everything.' Every secret, every vulnerability. Liam. The thought alone was a paralyzing ice pick to her heart.
Adrian stood frozen, his face a mask of disbelief, then a storm. His jaw worked, muscles twitching violently. Elias Thorne. The name felt like a betrayal.
Leo, slumped in the chair, averted his gaze. He trembled, a tangible fear radiating off him. This wasn't just coercion. It was terror.
'Thorne,' Adrian finally rasped, the name tasting like ash. 'My uncle. He’s behind this?'
Clara stepped closer, laying a hand on Adrian's arm. Her touch was meant to ground him, but his arm was rigid, coiled for a fight.
'He’s a ghost,' Leo mumbled, his voice barely a whisper. 'Always in the shadows. He knows your every move, Mr. Sterling. He made me watch you, report everything.'
Watching Adrian, his dark eyes narrowed to slits, Clara knew this wasn't just about business anymore. This was personal. Deeply, horrifyingly personal.
Fists clenched, Adrian stalked to the window, staring out at the city lights. Each flicker seemed to mock him, a thousand eyes watching, just as Thorne had watched him.
'How long?' Adrian demanded, his voice low and dangerous. 'How long has he been playing us?'
Leo flinched. 'Years. Since your father…' He trailed off, fear tightening his throat.
Adrian spun around, his eyes blazing. He didn't need Leo to finish the sentence. The implication hung heavy in the air, a poisonous gas. Could Elias have been involved in his father's tragic downfall, too?
Pulling out his phone, Adrian made a rapid call. His voice, usually so controlled, was sharp, urgent. 'Mr. Albright. Meet me at the penthouse. Now. Discretely.'
He paced, a caged predator. His uncle. The man who had always been a distant, resentful figure in the family's periphery, now revealed as the architect of his pain, his company's near ruin, and the threat to Clara and Liam.
Clara watched him, her own fear for Liam warring with her need to support Adrian. She knew this revelation would shatter him, not just professionally, but personally. Family betrayal was a wound that festered.
Less than an hour later, a soft knock echoed through the spacious penthouse. Mr. Albright, Adrian's long-time, impeccably dressed advisor, entered. His silver hair was neatly combed, his expression grave.
'Adrian,' he began, his voice calm, but with an underlying current of urgency. He nodded a polite, knowing greeting to Clara.
Adrian didn't waste a second. 'Elias Thorne. Tell me everything.'
Albright's eyes met Adrian's, a flicker of something akin to sorrow in their depths. 'I suspected as much. My own investigations led me to him, but I lacked conclusive proof until recently.'
Taking a seat opposite them, Albright opened his briefcase, pulling out a slim file. 'Elias Thorne has always resented your branch of the family, Adrian. He saw himself as the true heir to the Sterling legacy, not your father, and certainly not you.'
'His bitterness festered,' Albright continued, flipping open the file. 'He believed your father stole his birthright. And when you took the reins, that resentment turned into a dangerous obsession.'
Adrian listened, his knuckles white against his thighs. The pieces clicked into place, forming a horrifying mosaic. The subtle sabotages, the calculated leaks, the whisper campaigns that had always felt just beyond reach.
'He’s a master manipulator,' Albright explained, his gaze steady. 'He operates through proxies, exploiting weaknesses, planting seeds of doubt and discord. He cultivated a network of informants and pawns over decades.'
Albright outlined Thorne's methods: leveraging old debts, blackmailing vulnerable individuals like Leo Maxwell, and subtly influencing board decisions years ago, long before Adrian even took over.
'He’s been playing the long game,' Clara murmured, a chill running down her spine. The thought of someone so patient, so insidious, made her skin crawl.
'Precisely,' Albright confirmed. 'He wanted to dismantle everything you built, piece by painful piece. Not just for power, but for vengeance. He wanted to see the Sterling name, as he perceived it, brought to its knees.'
Adrian's breath hitched. He closed his eyes for a moment, picturing his uncle, a man he barely knew, orchestrating his downfall, and threatening his family. The rage that simmered beneath his controlled exterior now threatened to erupt.
'What about my father?' Adrian asked, his voice strained. 'Was he involved in…'
Albright paused, choosing his words carefully. 'I can't say for certain, Adrian. But some of the financial irregularities that contributed to your father's stress, the ones that were never fully explained, bear Elias's signature. He thrives on chaos he can control.'
The admission was a punch to Adrian's gut. Not only had Thorne targeted him, but perhaps his father too. A dark, ancestral vendetta.
Clara squeezed Adrian's arm again. 'We need to focus. What's his plan now? Leo said he knows everything about us.'
'Indeed,' Albright said, looking gravely at Clara. 'His final objective is not just your company, Adrian, but your personal life. He sees your happiness, your family, as another symbol of what he believes was taken from him.'
He leaned forward, placing a small, encrypted data stick on the table. 'This arrived just hours ago. It came through an old, secure channel Thorne used to communicate with his most trusted operatives. I've managed to crack the initial layers of encryption.'
Albright pushed the data stick across the table towards Adrian. His eyes held a grim resolve, a warning. 'This is his last move.'
