Adrian watched her fall. A sickening lurch twisted in his gut, but it was quickly overridden by the resurgence of his white-hot rage. She was playing him. Another trick, another manipulation.
Her body crumpled onto the marble floor, a heap of pale limbs and dark hair. Her eyes, wide and unfocused, stared blankly at the ceiling. He hadn't expected her to actually collapse.
A small voice sliced through the charged air. "Mommy?"
Leo stood in the doorway, his tiny blue dinosaur clutched tight against his chest. His eyes, so uncannily like Adrian's own, widened with innocent alarm as he took in the scene.
Adrian's head snapped towards his son. His fury, moments ago a roaring inferno, flickered, a sudden, unwanted tremor of doubt. He saw the pure confusion on Leo's face, the fear beginning to bloom.
"Mommy? What's wrong?" Leo's voice was a soft whimper. He took a hesitant step into the room, his gaze fixed on Clara's still form.
Adrian's jaw tightened. He wanted to shout, to drag Clara to her feet and demand answers. But Leo was here. Leo, his son, who knew nothing of the vicious betrayal that had just shattered Adrian's world.
Moving slowly, Leo shuffled towards Clara. His small hand reached out, tentatively touching her arm. "Mommy, wake up."
Adrian’s gaze flickered between the two of them. Clara, pale and unmoving, and Leo, so small, so vulnerable, clearly terrified. A primal instinct, sharp and unexpected, pierced through his anger.
He shouldn't have done this in front of Leo. The thought hit him with the force of a physical blow. He’d been so consumed by his own pain, his own rage, he hadn’t considered the child.
Clara’s eyelids fluttered. A soft groan escaped her lips. Her eyes, unfocused, slowly found Leo's face, then Adrian's.
Terror etched itself onto her features, stark and immediate. Her body tensed, a silent plea for protection, for him to stop. She was not faking this.
Leo, sensing her stirring, looked up at Adrian. "Is Mommy okay?" His bottom lip trembled, a tiny, heartbreaking tremor.
Adrian felt a strange tightening in his chest. This boy, his son, was looking at him for reassurance. Looking at the man who had just torn his mother's world apart.
He knelt beside Clara, ignoring Adrian for a moment. "Mommy, you fell." He stroked her hair, a gesture of pure, innocent comfort that twisted Adrian’s gut.
Clara’s hand rose weakly, clutching Leo’s shirt. Her gaze, still wide with fear, locked onto Adrian's. A silent message passed between them: *Don't hurt him. Don't let him see this.*
Adrian's anger, though still simmering, began to war with a new, unsettling feeling. He looked at Leo's innocent face, then at Clara's terrified one. He was supposed to be the monster here, the avenging force.
"Daddy..." Leo looked up again, his voice barely a whisper. "Are you staying?"
Adrian froze. *Daddy.* The word, spoken with such simple hope, cut through his fury like a blade. It was the first time Leo had called him that directly, consciously, since Adrian had revealed himself.
Staying? After all the accusations, the declarations, the threats? His mind screamed *no*. He had come here to strip Clara of everything, to reclaim what was his. Staying implied forgiveness, a truce.
But Leo's small hand reached out, tugging gently on Adrian's sleeve. "Don't go. Stay with Mommy and me."
His voice was soft, persuasive, brimming with a child’s simple desire for peace. The innocent plea was a direct hit, aimed straight at the wall of ice Adrian had built around his heart. It chipped away a small piece.
Adrian's gaze dropped to Leo's trusting blue eyes. They were wide, full of unadulterated hope. A wave of something akin to shame washed over him. This boy, his son, saw him as a protector, a safe harbor.
His earlier words, his vow to take Leo away, echoed in his ears. How could he rip this child from his mother, especially when Leo looked at him like this? The certainty he'd felt moments ago began to waver.
Clara, still struggling to sit up, watched him with bated breath. Her hand still clutched Leo's shirt, a silent promise to protect him, even from his own father.
Adrian's chest felt tight, a battleground of conflicting emotions. Rage, betrayal, the overwhelming desire for justice – all these fought against the surprising, potent surge of protectiveness for the small boy who held his sleeve.
Looking from Leo's hopeful, pleading face to Clara's tear-streaked, terrified one, Adrian felt his anger twist into something much more complex. He had come here to destroy her, but Leo’s innocent plea had momentarily disarmed him, leaving him adrift in a storm of his own making.
