Chapter 26: Fury Unleashed
907 words
Crumpled paper shook in Ethan's hand. His gaze, usually so composed, was shattered, raw fury burning beneath the shock. Aria felt her blood run cold, every nerve ending screaming. The sterile hospital corridor, moments ago bustling, now seemed to hold its breath.
"What is this?" His voice was a low growl, barely audible, yet it vibrated with terrifying intensity. He pointed a trembling finger at the lab report, the bold letters of 'Blood Type: AB-Negative' and 'Paternal Match: High Probability' stark against the white page.
Aria's throat constricted. Words failed her. Her carefully constructed world teetered on the brink, ready to collapse. She tried to reach for the paper, a futile gesture.
He yanked it back. "Don't," he commanded, his eyes blazing. "Don't you dare touch this. Don't you dare try to lie to me again."
Panic clawed at her. "Ethan, please. It's not..."
"Not what?" he snarled, stepping closer, invading her personal space. The air crackled with his anger. "Not what it looks like? Because it looks like you lied to me for years. It looks like you hid my child."
Her heart hammered against her ribs. She glanced around, acutely aware of the nurses and visitors passing by. This was not the place. Not now, with Lily just steps away.
"We can't talk here," she whispered, tugging at his arm. He shrugged her off as if she were a nuisance.
His jaw flexed, a muscle twitching violently. "We *will* talk here. Or in front of Julian. Or in front of the entire hospital. It makes no difference to me. But you *will* tell me."
Fear, sharp and icy, pierced her. Julian. He couldn’t know. Not yet. Lily. She needed her surgery.
"Just... follow me," Aria pleaded, her voice hoarse. She walked quickly towards a secluded stairwell, her legs feeling like lead. She didn't look back, but felt his furious presence tracking her every step.
Reaching the emergency exit door, she pushed it open, ushering him into the cold, concrete space. The heavy door hissed shut, muffling the hospital sounds, leaving them in an echoing silence.
He leaned against the railing, his back to her, rigid with suppressed rage. His broad shoulders rose and fell with controlled, furious breaths. Aria hugged herself, trembling.
"Explain," he stated, his voice devoid of all warmth. It was a command, not a request.
Aria swallowed hard, her mouth dry. "It's complicated, Ethan."
He spun around. "Complicated? You think this is complicated? You told me you had a child. You told me her father was Julian. You made me sign a contract where I couldn't touch you, couldn't have feelings, because you were a 'package deal' with *his* child!"
His words were daggers, each one twisting in her gut. He paced the small landing, his movements predatory.
"And all this time, Lily… she's *mine*." He slammed a fist against the concrete wall, the sound echoing ominously. "My daughter. My blood."
Tears pricked at her eyes. "I never meant to hurt you."
"Hurt me?" He scoffed, a bitter, humorless sound. "You didn't just hurt me, Aria. You systematically, deliberately, made a fool of me. You stripped me of my rights. You robbed me of years with my child!"
"It wasn't like that," she tried to explain, desperation coating her words. "When I found out… I was alone. You were gone. You had made it clear you wanted nothing to do with me."
"Gone?" he repeated, incredulous. "I was gone? You disappeared! You left the country without a word, vanished into thin air!"
He closed the distance between them, his eyes boring into hers. "And what about Julian? What is he in all of this? Does he know? Has he been raising my child, believing she's his?"
The question hung heavy in the air, a sword above Julian's head. Aria shook her head, tears finally escaping, tracing hot paths down her cheeks. "No. He doesn't know. Nobody knows. Only me."
"Only you?" Ethan's voice was dangerously soft, more terrifying than his shouts. "So you've been living a lie, a monumental deception, all by yourself. And you expected to keep it going indefinitely?"
"I didn't have a choice," she pleaded, her voice cracking. "I thought… I thought you hated me. I thought you would reject us both. I was scared, Ethan. So scared."
"Scared?" He laughed, a short, sharp sound. "Scared of what? Of me knowing I had a daughter? Scared of me wanting to be a father? Is that why you kept her from me?"
She stumbled back, hitting the cold wall. "I was protecting her! And myself! After everything, how could I trust you?"
"Trust me?" He mimicked her, a sneer twisting his lips. "You talk about trust, when you've woven a web of deceit so intricate, so cruel, it makes every interaction we've ever had a lie."
He gestured wildly, encompassing their entire shared history, their recent business arrangement. "The vows. The contract. All of it. Built on a lie. Was this your plan, Aria? To get close to me, to take my money, while secretly holding my child hostage?"
"No! Never!" She pushed off the wall, her own anger flaring through her fear. "I took your money because I needed it for Lily's surgery! To save *our* daughter! And the contract was *your* idea, to keep things professional!"
"Professional?" he bellowed, his voice echoing. "You want professional? This is professional. You're a liar and a manipulator. And I intend to get what is mine."
His eyes were hard, unforgiving. The man who had once looked at her with longing, with desire, was gone. Replaced by a stranger consumed by betrayal.
"You will tell me everything, Aria," he said, his voice dropping to a chilling whisper, "Every single detail. From the moment you knew, to every interaction you had with Julian, to why you never told me. Every lie, every omission, every choice."
He took another step, cornering her against the wall. His gaze was relentless, unwavering.
"Tell me everything, Aria," he repeated, his voice laced with venom, "Or I will take what is mine, and you will lose it all."
