The Ice Gala

The crimson notification glowed on the bezel: [Yurok Nimz: Purchase confirmed – Zenith Auction, Private Event. Collateral listed: The ‘Starfallen’ Carnelian Necklace.] Sefiya’s fingers clenched around the cold metal. Her mother’s necklace. The pendant was her mother's sovereign asset, the single lever capable of securing her legal independence. Nimz had chosen the Zenith floor, an invitation-only exchange for Volgard’s dynastic houses. She remained locked inside the Vildyr perimeter, unable to attend in person. He had sealed off the external internet, but not his own direct access. Not anymore. Not with the Plum-Honey Override nestled deep within his system’s core.
She accessed the backdoor, a sliver of her will threading through the Vildyr network. She routed her packet flow through Jarek’s high-priority terminal, tapping the node reserved for hostile takeovers. The screen resolved into the stark, crystalline lobby of the Zenith exchange. The ‘Ice Gala,’ as it was whispered among the elite. Rendered specters in tailored coats drifted across the floor, their forms catching light from simulated ice pillars. A perfect setting for cold, calculated transactions.
Her proxy initialized beside a peripheral console: a matte gray outline stripped of identifying tags. She needed no presence, only an insertion point. The broker held a wireframe model of the jewel aloft, red facets turning under simulated spot lamps. Nimz stood near the front rail under his house's spiked crest, his shoulders rigid. He was eager.
Bids opened through encrypted handshakes. Sefiya monitored Nimz's ledger feed as the counter ticked upward. When his tally approached the ceiling, she introduced a microsecond latency trap into his outbound routing. The packet delayed his confirmation just long enough for competing houses to take the floor. Nimz's synthetic frame stuttered on the refresh line.
She cycled the loop twice more. Each transmission caught in the buffer, forcing third-tier dynasties ahead of his registry. The rendering engine warped around his jawline as his local transmitter overheated. Let him choke on the delay.
[Bid: 780 Million Credits – House Lyran]
[Bid: 785 Million Credits – House Nimz (Error: System Lag)]
[Bid: 790 Million Credits – House Vesper]
The floor broker called the lot without pause. Nimz turned toward the peripheral stations, running trace routines across the gallery. He had detected the packet origin. Sefiya retreated behind her proxy's basic handshake, her pulse catching. Direct conflict always unraveled her; she needed the silence of an indirect strike.
Nimz pivoted directly toward her terminal, zeroing in on her proxy. The synthetic model shook with raw fury. He moved, not with the smooth glide of the other attendees, but with a sudden, aggressive lunge. He forced an unauthorized bridge across the peer-to-peer layer, tearing open her terminal feed. Her display fractured into static.
His face, suddenly sharper, clearer, materialized directly in front of her. His eyes burned with a furious, almost desperate light. "You think you’re clever, Sefiya? Hiding in the Vildyr shadows?" His voice, normally a smooth rumble, was now rough, laced with venom. "You think you can play games with me while you carry *that*?" His gaze dropped, a heavy, implied weight, to her lower abdomen. "You keep playing, and I’ll make sure that little parasite never draws a full breath. Not in *my* Volgard. Not on *my* watch."
The threat hung in the audio stream. Sefiya went rigid against her desk, the cold floor biting into the soles of her feet. All she could see was Nimz’s snarling face, all she could hear was the threat against her child. The shame of being caught, the humiliation of his public accusation, crushed her. Her shyness, her aversion to direct conflict, paralyzed her. She couldn’t speak. She couldn’t move. Her gray silhouette stood inert, trapped in the cross-connection.
A second signature bypassed the server firewall, materializing beside her station with administrative authority. Jarek Vildyr's construct rendered in full obsidian relief, towering and precise. He looked at Nimz, his expression utterly devoid of warmth.
"The Vildyr Estate recognizes and assumes full financial and legal responsibility for the outstanding debt of Sefiya Karn to House Nimz." Jarek’s voice, amplified and resonant, silenced the entire exchange. "Furthermore, we formally claim all ancestral assets and associated collateral under the new terms of the Vildyr Pact. The Starfallen Carnelian Necklace is now, effectively, Vildyr property."
The gallery feeds fell dead silent. Nimz’s face contorted further, his rage curdling into something like disbelief. "You can’t! This is my right! My collateral!"
Jarek looked straight at the podium. "One billion," he stated, even and level. "Lot closed by sovereign buyout. Effective immediately." The sum exceeded the market value of the entire hall's inventory. It was a public, brutal humiliation. A declaration of war.
[Bid: 1,000,000,000 Credits – House Vildyr (Immediate Transfer Confirmed)]
The broker struck the virtual gavel with a trembling keystroke. Lot status switched to settled. Nimz's link terminated instantly under an administrative boot command, his silhouette dissolving into static.
Jarek shifted toward Sefiya's terminal marker, dark eyes fixed upon her. He did not speak. He merely stood there, a silent, imposing guardian. The feed, finally, cut out, plunging Sefiya’s slate back into the quiet dimness of her room. But then, a faint, desperate echo bled through a secondary audio channel, a ghost of Nimz’s voice, raw and broken, a whisper from the void: "You think I did it for the money, Sefiya? Check the Volgard pediatric wards."
