Chapter 7 of 10

The Poisoner's Prescription

1.1k words

The reverberation of the intruder’s voice rattled the window casing. Sloane scrambled back across the tile, palms flat against cold linoleum. The clatter of boots on polished linoleum echoed from the distant main entrance, accompanied by the guttural shouts of men taking up positions. This wasn’t a mere incursion; it was a military-grade breach, executed with ruthless efficiency. Vekesh, no longer a man reeling from blood loss, stood with an almost predatory stillness. The exhaustion had vanished, replaced by a cold, calculating fury. “They are not here for Bram,” he stated, his voice a low growl, devoid of its usual melancholic undertone. “They are here for me. To force one more ‘cure’ from my hands.” “One more cure?” Sloane whispered, dread coiling in her gut. She pictured the fractured arcane seal in the sub-basement, the way the black energy had pulsed. The possessed intruder would compel Vekesh to feed the beast again. A sickening crash tore through the air, closer this time, followed by the metallic shriek of tearing steel. A heavy door, likely one of the main ward entrances, had been forced. “I will not be its puppet,” Vekesh declared, his lips curling back from yellowed teeth. He stalked toward the threshold. “If they want an apothecary, they will receive my venom.” He slammed his palm against the reinforced steel, a faint green energy blooming at his touch, causing the metal to hum ominously. “This will take too long,” he muttered, glancing overhead. “The pharmacy is closer. I need ingredients.” “The pharmacy is on the ground floor, sealed by biometric locks, and protected by reinforced security doors!” Sloane protested, her gaze darting between the reinforced latch and the rafters. “What are you planning? We need to hide, Vekesh, not go seeking a confrontation!” He ignored her, his mind already calculating trajectories and structural weaknesses. “Hiding prolongs the inevitable. To poison an entity of that magnitude, I need specific compounds. And time is a luxury we don't possess.” With a powerful leap, he scaled the wall, his agile movements defying the lingering weakness of his body. His fingers found purchase in the narrow gap where the wall met the overhead plenum, then he launched himself upward, vanishing into the crawlspace with a soft scraping sound. Dust rained down onto Sloane’s hair. Down below, Sloane stood alone, surrounded by the escalating chaos. The shouts grew louder, punctuated by the sharp crack of what sounded like stun batons. Patients’ cries mingled with the metallic clang of gates being forced open. She couldn't just stand there. Vekesh was reckless, but he was also her only chance. She snatched a fallen orderly’s lanyard from the floor, pocketing the blue plastic keycard. Meanwhile, Vekesh moved through the ventilation plenum like a specter, the metallic tang of ductwork and the stale scent of circulated air filling his nostrils. The flimsy drop tiles offered little resistance, allowing him to traverse the facility unseen. He located the pharmacy by the distinct chemical scent wafting up through the vents—a unique blend of sterile alcohol, potent sedatives, and a faint, acrid undertone of industrial cleaning agents. Perfect. He dropped soundlessly through a recessed light panel, landing amidst rows of medication bottles and gleaming stainless steel. His eyes scanned the shelves, dismissing tranquilizers and antidepressants. These were palliative treatments, not weapons against a parasitic entity. He needed something more fundamental, something corrosive to spirit, yet familiar enough to the body to be absorbed. His gaze landed on a large, unlabeled container of industrial-grade bleach, then on a tray of recently dispensed antipsychotics—clozapine, haloperidol, olanzapine. Potent neuro-regulators. A dark smile touched his lips. The modern world’s poisons, blended with its most potent purifiers. A fitting irony. With swift, precise movements, Vekesh emptied several bottles of antipsychotics into a metal beaker, crushing the tablets with the heel of his palm. He added a measured quantity of the harsh bleach, stirring the concoction with a glass rod until it frothed with a menacing, opalescent sheen. The fumes were noxious, stinging his eyes, but he felt no pain, only a fierce focus. This was not a cure. This was a rebuke. A sovereign's final lesson. Back in the main ward, Sloane found herself trapped. The mercenaries had swept the ward, herding terrified patients into the central rec hall. The elder Vance brother stalked at their head, his gait unnaturally rigid, his irises flecked with jade fire. He spotted Sloane trying to blend in amongst a group of nurses. “Dr. Aris,” the puppet boomed, carrying a double timber that vibrated the baseboards. The escort parted for him. “How convenient. Still protecting your pet lunatic. Where is he, Sloane? Or should I call him… Vekesh?” His lips stretched into a mockery of a smile, revealing too many teeth. Sloane swallowed, her gaze darting, searching for an escape that wasn’t there. “He isn't here,” Sloane said. “Stand down before security locks the bulkheads.” “Oh, I know precisely what I am doing,” he purred, the timbre far too cavernous for the man wearing the coat. “And he *is* here. I feel him. He thinks he can deny his purpose. He thinks he can escape fate.” His hand, strong and unyielding, gripped her arm, pulling her roughly forward, away from the cowering staff. “He will perform the final rite. Or everyone here will witness what happens when you defy the will of the heavens.” He drew a gleaming, black-bladed knife from a sheath at his hip, the metal absorbing the harsh fluorescent light. The intruder pressed the blade against Sloane’s throat until beads of crimson welled along the steel. “This is a summons, Sloane. Tell him the subterranean serpent will not be denied.” A deafening crash split the overhead drywall. Plaster chunks, fiberglass batting, and sheared sheet metal rained over the floor. Vekesh dropped into the dust, plant-footed between the blade and Sloane. In his hand, a metal beaker, fuming with an unnatural, sickly green vapor. “You barked for an alchemist?” Vekesh snarled. “Swallow your medicine.” The possessed heir lunged with the blade. Vekesh pivoted inside the arc, caught the hinge of the attacker's jaw with one calloused hand, and wrenched it wide. In the same motion, he dumped the smoking contents of the beaker down the exposed throat. The man choked, nostrils flaring as green vapor blasted from his nose and ears. A shrill, chthonic bellow ripped from his chest. The flesh across his cheekbones blackened and swelled into weeping pustules. A torrent of acidic black ichor erupted from his mouth, spraying across the pristine floor, sizzling and smoking where it touched. From his twisting torso, a serpentine knot of shadow and viridian sparks tore free, shrieking before it dissolved into thin air. The heir crumpled to the tiles, twitching, his face ash-gray and his breath rattling. [Negative Karma registered. Target poisoned. Punishment: The Earth Dragon will consume you directly.]
