Chapter 1 of 10

The DNA Drop

868 words

The scent of expensive perfume and cheap champagne always clung to the Valdira Grand Hotel's coat check, marking every wool lapel and mink wrap dropped over the counter. Senja Kastara, hidden behind the polished rosewood counter, knew it well. Each garment she hung, each velvet slip of a numbered ticket she offered, bought another day’s supply of Tavi’s inhaler. The thought of her brother, slight and prone to wheezing, kept her hands steady as she navigated the chaos of the Kastera engagement party. Tonight, the usual din of polite society was amplified by the sheer volume of wealth crammed into the Grand Ballroom. Crystal chandeliers dripped light onto a sea of tailored suits and shimmering gowns. Nadia Kastara, the family's supposed golden child, floated through the room, her laughter tinkling like wind chimes – an artificial sound Senja had learned to discern. Nadia wore a gown the color of a bruised twilight sky, its fabric cascading around her, projecting an image of effortless belonging. Senja watched her, an invisible phantom in the periphery, and felt the familiar prickle of irritation. Nadia, with her stolen life, and Senja, with her scraped-together existence in the Gritmaw District. The world was a rigged game, and Senja had long ago learned to play by its hidden rules, mostly by staying out of sight. Above the murmur of the crowd, a sudden, jarring feedback squealed through the ballroom’s sound system. Conversation died. Heads craned upwards. From the expansive balconies overlooking the main floor, a figure emerged. Aris Morante. He moved with the languid grace of a predator who knew its prey was cornered. His dark suit, cut with the precision of a surgeon’s scalpel, made him seem a part of the shadows he emerged from. A single, cruel smile touched his lips. “My apologies for the interruption, esteemed guests,” Aris’s voice, amplified to a resonant boom, echoed through the ballroom, carrying a chilling undercurrent of delight. “But it seems there’s been a slight…misidentification.” The grand projector, wired for celebratory montages, flickered to life. Instead of family photos, a complex data visualization spread across the entire ceiling, shimmering above the stunned faces. It was a genomic map, intricate and undeniable. Two columns of data appeared, labeled 'Subject A' and 'Subject B'. Underneath, bold text read: 'Kastara Lineage – Paternal Match: 99.99%'. A collective gasp ripped through the crowd. Nadia, mid-sip of champagne, froze, the delicate glass tilting in her hand. Her face, typically so composed, contorted into pure terror. The data points shifted. Subject A’s profile, revealed as Nadia Kastara, showed a paternal match of 0.00%. The system paused, then overlaid a new name above ‘Subject B’. Senja Kastara. Senja felt a cold knot tighten in her gut. She could feel the sudden, intense focus of hundreds of eyes, not on the ceiling anymore, but searching for her. Her invisibility, her carefully crafted defense, had shattered. The room hummed with a thousand whispered questions, a thousand silent judgments. Nadia’s choked sob was a raw, exposed sound. Before the initial shock could fully dissipate, two burly figures in Kastara security uniforms moved with startling speed towards the coat check. Their faces were grim, their movements precise. One reached for the small, shivering form of Tavi, who had darted out from behind the counter, drawn by the sudden silence. The other lunged for Senja, his hand outstretched to grasp her arm. “Don’t you dare,” Senja’s voice was a low growl, utterly devoid of the polite subservience she usually adopted. Her street instincts, honed in the alleys of Gritmaw, flared to life. As the guard’s hand connected with her wrist, she didn’t recoil. Instead, her body became a conduit of contained fury. She twisted, a blur of motion, using his own momentum against him. Her fingers locked around his wrist, finding the precise pressure point, and a sharp crack echoed in the suddenly silent corner of the room. The guard cried out, his arm bending at an unnatural angle. His sidearm, unsecured, clattered to the marble floor. Senja didn't hesitate. She shoved him back, creating space between him and Tavi. Her eyes, usually downcast, blazed with a fierce, protective fire. She pulled Tavi behind her, her body a shield. Her gaze swept across the room, meeting the horrified, disgusted, and suddenly fearful stares of the elite. They saw a salon worker, a slum dweller, but she knew they were seeing something else now: a threat. From the balcony, Aris Morante watched, his calculated smile softening into something far more dangerous, a glint of genuine, predatory interest in his eyes. The girl was not merely a tool for his revenge; she was a spectacle, an unexpected variable. Senja’s eyes, bright with challenge, met his across the opulent expanse. He saw a cold, unwavering defiance, a promise of retribution. Then, her gaze hardened as it swept to the figure now approaching the coat check. Dalen Kastara, her biological father, stood there, his face a mask of patrician ice. He looked not at the broken guard, not at the terrified Nadia, but directly at Senja. “Take them,” Dalen’s voice was devoid of warmth, a command carved from granite. “Both of them. Into the black SUV waiting outside. She’s coming home.”
