Chapter 37: Partial Confession, Deeper Wounds
938 words
Shattered, Roman’s composure truly fractured. His jaw clenched, a muscle jumping in his cheek. He looked away, his gaze sweeping across the opulent room as if searching for an escape. This was not the icy, calculated man she knew. This was raw.
“You wanted the truth, Anya,” he finally rasped, his voice rough, stripped of its usual smooth control. He turned back, his eyes dark, haunted pools that reflected a pain she hadn't anticipated.
“Tell me,” she demanded, her voice an unsteady whisper, though she tried to project strength. Her fingers curled into her palms, nails biting into her skin. The rage was still there, a hot coil in her gut, but now a chill of dread began to spread.
He swallowed hard, his throat working. “It’s… more complicated than you imagine.”
“Complicated?” Anya scoffed, the sound sharp. “You systematically dismantled my family, Roman. You destroyed everything we had. What could possibly be complicated about that?”
Running a hand through his dark hair, Roman let out a guttural sound, like a wounded animal. “You think this was easy for me? That I woke up one day and decided to ruin innocent people for sport?”
“Didn't you?” she challenged, stepping closer, her heart hammering against her ribs. “Your gentleness, your feigned concern—it was all a lie, a tool to lull me into a false sense of security while you planned your attack.”
Ignoring her accusation, he took a deep, shuddering breath. “There are layers to this. A history.” His eyes fixed on hers, an intensity in their depths that made her shiver despite the heat of her anger. “A history that predates your family’s current downfall.”
“What history?” Anya pressed, her voice edged with impatience. “Speak plainly, Roman.”
Taking another step back, he created a sliver of distance between them. “My family… my own past. It’s tied into this.” His gaze dropped, his shoulders slumping slightly. “You remember me telling you about my father? His business?”
Anya nodded slowly, a prickle of unease starting to crawl up her spine. He’d mentioned a difficult past, a fight to rebuild after a collapse. She’d always assumed it was a simple rags-to-riches story, not a prelude to her own tragedy.
“He was… an ambitious man,” Roman continued, choosing his words with agonizing slowness. “He built an empire from nothing. But he trusted the wrong people.”
His fists clenched at his sides. “He put everything into a joint venture, a massive investment that promised to revolutionize the industry. He poured his life’s work into it, his future, our future.”
Anya held her breath, sensing the shift in the air. The story wasn’t about her family yet, but the tension was thick, hinting at an inevitable convergence. She could almost taste the bitterness in his words.
“And then it collapsed,” he stated, his voice flat, devoid of emotion, yet the underlying pain was palpable. “Overnight. Everything gone. My father… he lost everything. His reputation, his wealth, his health.”
“I’m sorry,” Anya murmured, the words automatic, though a part of her wondered if this was merely a distraction, a way to deflect from his own culpability.
He offered a mirthless smile. “Sorry? Sorry doesn’t bring back what was lost. It doesn’t mend a broken man, or a broken family.”
His eyes narrowed, their earlier haunted look replaced by a glint of something colder, sharper. “I watched him fall. Saw the light leave his eyes, the spirit drain from his body. I was just a boy, Anya, powerless to stop it.”
“What does this have to do with my family?” she finally asked, unable to contain her mounting anxiety. The pieces weren’t fitting, but the puzzle was growing more menacing.
Roman hesitated, drawing in a ragged breath. “The joint venture… the one that failed so spectacularly. It wasn’t just a simple business misstep.” He paused, looking at her as if steeling himself for her reaction. “It was orchestrated. Deliberately sabotaged.”
Her blood ran cold. “Sabotaged? By whom?”
“By those who stood to gain from his downfall,” he revealed, his voice dropping to a near whisper, yet each word hit her like a physical blow. “By those who wanted his empire, his innovations, for themselves.”
Anya felt a dizzying sensation, the room seeming to spin slightly. “You’re saying… this wasn’t an accident? That someone intentionally ruined your family?”
He nodded, his gaze unwavering, piercing through her. “I dedicated my life to finding out who. To understanding the mechanism of their betrayal. To making them pay.”
Her mind raced, trying to connect the dots. The timeline. The sheer scale of his current power. His relentless pursuit. It made a horrifying kind of sense, a dark logic she hadn't considered.
“And you found them?” she whispered, her voice barely audible. Her stomach churned with a terrifying premonition.
“I found them,” he confirmed, his lips twisting into a bitter, almost feral smile. “Piece by piece, I uncovered the network of lies, the backroom deals, the deliberate leaks that led to the collapse.”
Anya’s heart pounded, a frantic drum against her ribs. She didn’t want him to say it. She knew, somehow, what was coming. The explanation was partial, agonizing, and yet dreadfully clear.
“Who, Roman?” she demanded, the word torn from her throat. “Who was behind it?”
He took a step towards her, closing the small distance. His hand reached out, halting just shy of her arm. His eyes, now full of a desperate agony that mirrored her own growing fear, bore into hers.
“Your father…” he finally revealed, his voice a low, gravelly confession. “He played a part in my downfall, just as I played a part in his.”
