Chapter 9 of 10

The Pinnacle Squeeze

The air in the Pinnacle Executive Boardroom was thick with the scent of wealth and impending ruin. Sunlight, filtered through the smog-haze of Veridium, barely penetrated the reinforced plasteel windows, casting long, muted streaks across the polished mahogany table. Two dozen of Veridium's most influential investors and high-society patrons occupied the plush, ergonomic chairs, their faces a mixture of expectation and predatory curiosity. At the far end, two armed agents from the Financial Crimes Division stood by a discreet side door, hands resting near their stun-batons. Penn sat at the foot of the table, his obsidian-grey sleeve resting lightly against the polished wood. A pristine porcelain cup of dark roast rested beside his hand, steam curling toward the crystal chandelier. Across from him, Tiberius Vangale stood, radiating an almost imperious confidence. Sterling, pale and agitated, was perched rigidly in a seat to his father's right, his gaze darting between Penn and the silent agents. “Esteemed shareholders,” Tiberius’s voice resonated, smooth and authoritative, amplified just enough to fill the vast space without sounding theatrical. “We gather today not just for our quarterly assessment, but for a necessary, albeit tragic, reckoning.” He paused, letting the silence settle over the room. “As many of you are aware, the Vangale Conglomerate has faced unprecedented challenges over the past months. A substantial portion of our assets, a sum reaching into the tens of billions, has been systematically stolen.” A ripple went through the room. Penn met the gazes of a few powerful figures – the grim matriarch of the Sylas Group, the perpetually bored scion of the Krovos Holdings – and offered them a faint, almost imperceptible smile. They blinked, unsure how to interpret it. “It is with profound personal regret,” Tiberius continued, his voice dropping to a somber, paternal tone, “that I must reveal the architect of this fraud.” He turned slowly, his hand sweeping to encompass Penn. “My son, Penn Vangale. The boy I brought from the slums, believing he could be redeemed. He has repaid my generosity by methodically siphoning funds, placing this enterprise on the precipice of collapse.” Sterling sneered in agreement, his stare sharp with premature triumph directed at Penn. Penn merely raised his cup to his lips, taking a slow, appreciative sip. “The evidence,” Tiberius declared, nodding towards the immense, wall-mounted holopanels that dominated the boardroom. “Is irrefutable.” Just as the Vangale tech director, a sweating technician named Kaelus, moved to activate the feed, the entire array flickered. The corporate logo that had been idling in the corner vanished, replaced by a stylized, minimalist icon: a single, open eye, its pupil a swirling vortex of binary code. A low murmur of confusion spread through the room. Before the tech could react, a new display snapped into focus across every panel simultaneously. It wasn't the neatly packaged report Tiberius had prepared. Instead, a complex web of wire transactions exploded across the plasteel, lines of credit and routing pathways tracing intricate, undeniable paths. Names and account numbers, meticulously highlighted, began to emerge. The investors leaned forward, their expressions shifting from curiosity to alarm. “What is this?” Tiberius snapped, stepping toward the console. “Kaelus! Restore our presentation!” The technician backed away with open hands, staring at the primary holopanel. The open eye icon pulsed gently in the corner as text appeared, concise and damning: *PROJECT ABYSS. PRIMARY BENEFICIARY: TIBERIUS VANGALE. SECONDARY BENEFICIARY: STERLING VANGALE.* The trail continued to unfurl, detailing a vast network of shell corporations, offshore vaults, and strategically re-routed clearance codes – not Penn’s, but originating from Tiberius’s private terminals and, with horrifying clarity, Sterling’s executive keycard. Dates and amounts scrolled relentlessly, painting an undeniable picture of decades of calculated asset stripping, all concealed within the corporate labyrinth. Gasps echoed through the room. The matriarch of Sylas Group slammed a fist on the table. “Tiberius! You swine! This is your doing!” “It’s a hack!” Tiberius bellowed, his face blanching. “A fabrication! Penn, this is your street-rat accomplice, isn’t it? Police! Arrest him!” The two investigators hesitated, their attention fixed on the terminal output, which now highlighted the specific statutory codes being violated, along with the statutory penalties attached to each. Penn took another sip of his roast, setting the rim down without a sound. Then, the displays shifted again. The transaction map dissolved, replaced by a stark, live interface. It was a market trading platform, displaying the Vangale Group's stock ticker. Red numbers already dominated, but then, a series of catastrophic short positions, initiated by Sterling Vangale under the guise of an ‘Aura-Link Systems’ acquisition, flashed into view. The scale of the over-leveraging was staggering. Panic erupted. An elderly investor clutched his chest. “My shares! What is happening?!” Across the glass, in brutal real-time, the share price began a vertical collapse. The numbers cratered, tick by tick, severing billions with clinical speed. The room became a cacophony of frantic shouts, ringing comm-links, and the scraping of chairs as once-composed aristocrats surged to their feet, their faces contorted in horror. Sterling stared at the boards, teeth bared in furious disbelief. “No! This can’t be! Mercer Logistics was supposed to crash! Not us! It’s a trick!” He turned on Penn, his face a mask of primal rage. “You! You did this, you slum-rat scum! You set me up!” Penn set his porcelain cup down with a delicate clink. He looked at Sterling, then at Tiberius, whose face was now a mask of utter, disbelieving horror as he watched his empire evaporate. “It’s not a trick, Sterling,” Penn said, his voice calm, clear, and utterly devoid of his previous bumbling act. “It’s a squeeze. And you, like your father, leveraged everything on a lie.” The stock ticker hit zero. A chilling red flatline. A collective groan swept through the room, a sound of unimaginable loss. The two badge-wearing agents, no longer hesitating, moved swiftly. One advanced on Sterling, who was still screaming incoherent accusations at Penn. “Sterling Vangale, you are under arrest for catastrophic market manipulation and conspiracy to defraud.” The metallic click of handcuffs echoed loudly in the suddenly stunned silence. The other agent approached Tiberius. The patriarch, usually so composed, looked hollowed out, staring blankly at the dead monitors. “Tiberius Vangale, you are under arrest for aggravated embezzlement, fraud, and unlawful asset stripping.” Tiberius didn’t resist as the cuffs locked onto his wrists. He simply stared at Penn, his jaw loose, stripped bare before the city's elite. Penn met his gaze with unblinking stillness, letting the silence do the work. He had not just bankrupted an empire; he had exposed the rot at its core. Beatrix Mercer, who had watched from the third row, caught Penn's eye and tipped her crystal glass in a slow, precise salute. The job was done. Or was it?
