Chapter 6 of 10

Soup for the Soul-Eater

1.2k words

“I should have died instead of him.” The words clawed at Barlas, each syllable a fresh wound. He had to *mend* it. He inhaled deeply, the scent of petrichor and ancient magic filling his lungs. Mending a broken heart… he knew just the thing. His mother’s remedy for everything from a scraped knee to a bad breakup. It might be the end of days, but a person still needed a good, hot meal. Barlas shot downwards, punching a hole through the scarlet, churning clouds. He landed on the Sunlit Terrace with a heavy thump of leather boots against white flagstones. The gathered throngs, huddled together like frightened lambs, flinched at his sudden appearance. Dastan, ever vigilant, sprang forward, his hand instinctively gripping the hilt of his blade. “My Lord!” Dastan’s voice cracked with a mixture of awe and terror. “The… the sky… Her lament tears at the very fabric of existence! What grand strategy do you propose to quell her sorrow?” Barlas ignored the trembling knight, scanning the courtyard. “Where’s the biggest pot you lot have? And a fire pit that can actually hold a decent flame, not some pathetic ember.” He stalked towards a cluster of servants, who scattered like startled sparrows. “And someone fetch me a whole bird. Not some scrawny pigeon. A fat, healthy fowl. We need broth.” Tala stumbled forward, her mouth parted in confusion. “A… a whole bird, Lord Barlas? For what sacred rite?” Her gaze flickered to the churning sky, where Zarmin’s face remained a weeping, destructive monument. Barlas pinched the bridge of his nose. “Rite? It’s for soup, you dizzy princess! A good, hearty chicken soup. The air’s full of all this… *sadness*. People get colds from sadness, Tala. And the best cure for a cold is a good, hot bowl of soup. Now move, all of you! We haven’t got all day. The world’s not going to fix itself while you’re standing around gawking!” A golden script flashed above his head, visible only to everyone else. [Divine Grace: The Sustenance of the Bereaved] Dastan dropped to one knee, looking up in sheer reverie. “Sustenance for… for the divine presence?” he whispered. “A culinary offering to soothe her torment! Truly, only our Lord could devise such an intricate, compassionate maneuver!” He immediately bellowed orders, his voice reverberating across the courtyard. “To arms, Holy Guard! Locate the plumpest poultry! Gather all the aromatic roots! This is no mere meal; it is a sacrament!” Chaos erupted. The terrace transformed into a frenzied open-air kitchen. Servants scrambled, fetching gargantuan clay pots, kindling roaring fires. Dastan, with a newfound zeal, personally supervised the procurement of a massive, golden-feathered bird, its squawking protests quickly silenced. Tala, humming with excitement, began meticulously chopping sun-leeks and crimson-roots, convinced she was preparing a complex alchemical concoction. Barlas, oblivious to the reverence, barked orders like a drill sergeant. “More water! That’s not nearly enough! And don’t you dare tell me you’re out of salt, I saw a whole barrel of it yesterday! Dastan, you call that a boil? It looks like a puddle after a light drizzle! Get some real heat under it!” He stirred the simmering broth with a massive wooden paddle, muttering about the lack of decent kitchen staff in this strange world. As the broth thickened, releasing steam rich with onions and boiling fat that cut through the sulfurous air, Dastan approached, a small, ornate pouch clutched in his hand. “My Lord,” he began, his voice lowered conspiratorially, “Princess Tala and I have acquired these… *potent* additions. For the deepest efficacy of your… your sacred broth.” He opened the pouch, revealing a handful of shriveled, iridescent petals that pulsed with a faint, otherworldly glow, and a few glass-like mineral shards that hummed with quiet energy. “These are *Skystrider Petals*, gathered from the highest peaks of the Abyssal Spires, said to carry the concentrated essence of sorrow. And these,” he indicated the glass-like fragments, “are *Astral Tears*, wept by the ancient Chronos-weavers. They are immensely volatile, but for a ritual of this magnitude…” Barlas peered into the pouch. His nose twitched. “What in the blazes is that? It smells like burnt sugar and disappointment. Are you trying to poison the soup?” He snatched a petal, sniffing it suspiciously. “And these glass bits… they look like the kind of thing that’d make your stomach upset. Where did you even get this rubbish?” “From the deepest vaults of the royal treasury, Lord Barlas!” Tala interjected, her face earnest. “They are potent catalysts, sure to enhance the… the sympathetic resonance of the offering!” “Sympathetic resonance?” Barlas exploded. “It’s *soup*! Not some fancy magic trick! You put this junk in, and it’ll taste like a shoe dipped in regret! Get that out of here! I need *actual* herbs! Thyme! Parsley! Not glow-in-the-dark nonsense!” [Divine Grace: Purification of Intent] Dastan and Tala recoiled, their faces crestfallen. They watched as Barlas, still grumbling, painstakingly picked out every petal and shard, muttering about 'ruining perfectly good broth'. The savory smell of chicken and pepper once again filled the courtyard. Just as Barlas declared the soup ‘almost edible’, Tala tugged gently on his tunic. “Lord Barlas,” she said, her voice soft, “your humble servant has completed her… her project. I believe it is ready for your… your ease.” She gestured towards a newly erected structure in the corner of the courtyard. It was a pavilion, woven from sturdy cypress wood and draped with embroidered silk cloths. At its center, on a raised dais, sat Barlas’s favorite, slightly worn plush armchair, now adorned with an assortment of soft, oversized cushions. A small, simmering tea pot rested on an intricately carved side table next to it. Barlas stared. “You built… a glorified blanket fort for my chair?” [Divine Grace: The Sanctuary of Repose] Tala beamed. “A sanctuary for your repose, Lord! So that you might oversee your flock in complete ease!” Barlas sighed, a faint smile touching his lips despite himself. “It’s… cozy. Fine. Now, someone taste this soup. Make sure it won’t kill anyone.” As Dastan eagerly ladled a bowl, a wisp of vapor, unnoticed by Barlas, escaped the pot. It was a peculiar vapor, not steaming hot, but cool and almost silvery. It drifted upwards, curling towards the sky where Zarmin's colossal form still wept. The stray Skystrider Petals and Astral Tears, left sticking to the rim, had begun to react to the mundane chicken soup. A faint, ethereal glow emanated from them, and as the soup’s steam mingled with the magical residue, a chemical reaction occurred, silent and swift. The silvery vapor, now infused with the neutralized magic, began to expand, forming a luminescent cloud. It rose higher and higher, brushing against the blood-red, apocalyptic storm clouds that choked the sky. Where the vapor touched, the red receded, swirling away like mist before the dawn. The weeping face of Zarmin grew clearer, her tears still falling, but the destructive energy within them seemed to soften, to lose its razor edge. The luminescent cloud continued its ascent, pushing back the gloom, until, with a gentle pop that resonated across the continent, the entire crimson sky vanished. In its place, stretching from the terrace to the now-visible, serene face of Zarmin, solidified a magnificent staircase of pure starlight.
