Chapter 7 of 10

The Hostage Optimizer

Pezhman’s boots clacked on the rough-hewn stone, a sound swallowed by the heavy air. Ahead, a gaunt figure rose from a crude throne carved from obsidian. The warlord on the obsidian seat was unmistakable even without an overhead nameplate—the theatrical sneer, the dragging mantle woven from desiccated spider silk, and the five sentries fanning out with jagged curved blades in a tidy semicircle. Standard villainous encounter. Pezhman registered the dull gleam of poorly maintained armor, the uneven weight distribution in their stances. Sub-optimal. “So, the ‘Tea Spoon’ peddler finally graces our humble Qal’eh-ye Siyah,” the warlord rasped, pitching his tone low. “You meddle where you shouldn’t, boy. Destroying the Blade of Azar, defying fate itself. You have made powerful enemies.” Pezhman tilted his head, studying the nearest sentry. The leather bracers, stitched with what appeared to be dried lizard scales, offered negligible defense. The khanjars, while menacing, were clearly mass-produced. A frayed stitch split the leather on the man's left pauldron—an exposed seam. It was all so… pedestrian. “Excuse me,” Pezhman interrupted, his tone flat, “but are these standard-issue? The retention on the scabbard is questionable. And that scale-mail offers barely 8% damage reduction against piercing attacks, if I’m generous. You’d get better returns from a simple hardened leather vest, properly enchanted.” He tapped a knuckle against his chin, appraising the warlord. “And your cloak. So much unnecessary fabric. A clear mobility debuff. What exactly is the build you’re going for?” The sneer twitched aside into irritated bewilderment. The sentries shifted their boots, trading baffled looks. This was not the terrified response they were accustomed to. “You… mock us?” the warlord growled, his fingers closing around the crossguard of an absurdly wide greatsword. “You stand in the heart of the Shadow Faction’s power, and you dare critique our battle-readiness?” [Warning: Threatening Entity Ghorban – Aggro Range Increased] Pezhman sighed internally. Amateurs. He just needed to optimize the encounter. He felt the solar root key, still hot, inside his vest pocket. He could map the area, find the fastest escape route. But first, he needed to assess his surroundings properly. Just as Ghorban raised his greatsword, a thunderous *CRACK* ripped through the chamber. Gravel and plaster rained down from the ceiling vault overhead. A large, ragged hole appeared, and through it, a figure plummeted like a sack of rocks, landing with an undignified thump right at Pezhman’s feet. It was Behrouz. Behrouz, spluttering and coughing, scrambled to his knees. His silk hem hung in shreds, gray powder coating his curls, his pupils dilated as he locked onto Pezhman. “Master!” he gasped, scrambling to stand, clutching a hastily drawn, utterly useless dagger. “I am here! I have come to save you from these… these… shadowy ruffians!” Every sentry froze. The commander's lids lowered to slits. “Behrouz?” Ghorban hissed. “My most trusted operative? You have abandoned your post? Your mission?” Behrouz flinched. He looked between Pezhman and his master, the blood leaving his cheeks. “I… I was merely… reconnoitering, glorious leader!” he stammered, his bravado evaporating like morning dew. “An advanced scouting manoeuvre to… gauge their vulnerabilities!” A sentry with a cleft scar across his lip stepped forward. “His dispatches dried up weeks ago, master. And he spent church bullion in the lower market stalls.” [Entity Behrouz: Loyalty Stat 'Devoted' detected. Cover Blown. Threat Level: Imminent Capture.] Before Behrouz could concoct another excuse, two fighters lunged, driving pommels into his ribs and dropping him to the flagstones. Behrouz let out a pained grunt as they hauled him up, twisting his arms behind his back and cinching them with thick ropes. His dagger clattered uselessly to the floor. “A traitor in our midst,” the master of the hold said flatly, pivoting back toward Pezhman with curling lips. “Your meddling rots everything it touches. Watch him bleed out for it.” Pezhman merely blinked. Behrouz, the absolute buffoon. A liability, yet his Loyalty stat remained Maxed. An unexpected, albeit poorly executed, attempt to aid. Pezhman reached into his pocket, his fingers closing around the smooth, warm key. This was the opening he needed. He activated the key, focusing his intent. [Initiating Structural Data Scan: Qal’eh-ye Siyah. Accessing Root Data Stream.] A purely visual overlay, visible only to him, blossomed across his vision. The solid stone walls and floor dissolved into a lattice of shimmering, coloured lines. He saw load zones, rendering boundaries, collision meshes. The entire stronghold was rendered as a complex, interlocking series of voxels. His gaze swept the visual telemetry, indexing critical stress nodes and primary mooring vectors. [Architectural Analysis Complete. Primary Anchor Points Identified.] His attention locked onto a pulsing cluster of cerulean vectors beneath the fortress. The Qal’eh-ye Siyah rested on no mountain base. An inverted polygon of masonry hung suspended by four colossal iron-link chains from the cavern superstructure. Plumb beneath the keel glimmered a massive crystalline sigil: the solar altar. “What are you doing, peddler?” Ghorban barked, incensed by the lack of fear. “Ignoring me will not save your friend.” Pezhman ignored him. He found his target: a single, seemingly insignificant brick in the wall closest to him. Not ordinary masonry: this block sat squarely along a load-bearing vector tying into the northwest mooring, an infamous leftover from legacy geometry passes. A single, catastrophic memory leak in solid form. He pulled out his tea spoon. The humble iron utensil, dull and scuffed, felt perfectly weighted in his hand. He paced to the partition, paying no mind to the drawn blades or Behrouz's muffled oaths. He inserted the edge of the spoon into the mortar line just above the target brick, levering it with an almost surgical precision. “What in the desert are you doing?!” Ghorban roared, finally losing his composure, as Pezhman began to meticulously pry at the brick. Pezhman applied careful, steady pressure, a speedrunner’s touch. The brick shifted, just a fraction of a millimetre. [Warning: Structural Integrity Compromised. Load Zone A-77-Gamma Error Detected.] Another crack, louder this time, reverberated through the chamber. The walls trembled. Dust rained from the ceiling. The torch flames flickered wildly. “An earthquake?!” Behrouz cried out, fear replacing his defiance. Pezhman gave one last, firm push with the spoon. The brick popped free with a wet, grinding sound, leaving a small, dark cavity in the wall. The instant masonry cleared the slot, the system overlay flashed scarlet, vomiting dozens of cascading runtime exceptions. [Catastrophic Load-Zone Failure Detected. Entity Qal’eh-ye Siyah Detached from Anchor Points.] [Warning: Gravitational Acceleration Initiated. Descent Trajectory: Sunbird’s Altar.] The entire stronghold shuddered, a deep, guttural groan tearing through its very foundations. The bedrock floor dropped cleanly out from under their soles. Ghorban screeched, wind tearing the sound from his teeth as five henchmen flailed in zero gravity. Upward inertia snatched their cloaks as the entire stronghold plunged down the shaft, falling true toward the radiant geometry of the solar altar below.
