Chapter 10 of 10
Eden Unbound

The civic intake hall was a cavern of polished chrome and shimmering data-screens, its air chilled to a sterile crispness that bit at Osha’s exposed skin. She clutched the datapad, the foreclosure notice still glowing faintly, a potent talisman against the fear that still tried to coil in her gut. Jaro stood at her back, a silent, unyielding presence, his gaze sweeping the vast space with an animalistic alertness. Uniformed sentries, their armor gleaming under the harsh overhead lights, stood rigid at every pillar, their pulse-rifles locked to their chests. This was the core of city administration, ringed by lethal perimeter watchmen.
“A simple thumbprint, Mrs. Kanto,” the registry drone chirped, its optical sensors fixated on her. “To finalize the Citizen Exemption transfer and the Apex Yield Corporation’s asset consolidation.”
Osha took a deep breath, the sterile air doing little to calm the tremor in her hand. She stepped towards the illuminated pad, her reflection wavering in its surface. Just one final, bureaucratic act, and the Purge Protocol would be a phantom of the past. Her gaze drifted to her wrist, where the dreaded timer still glowed, a mere two days, five hours, and fourteen minutes remaining. It felt like an eternity and a heartbeat all at once.
Before her thumb could connect, a sharp, metallic voice cut through the drone's bland tones. “Hold.”
Yashri Ruyan emerged from behind a towering data-pillar, her silver hair pulled back in a severe knot. She was flanked by two figures, not the standard precinct watch, but private security—bulky, black-clad hirelings with flat stares and advanced vibro-blades sheathed at their hips. These were Yashri’s personal loyalists, paid to ensure silence and loyalty. Her expression was a mask of cold fury, her eyes, usually so calculating, now held a glint of desperation.
“The Ruyan family assets are not to be plundered by a common street urchin,” Yashri declared, her voice echoing in the cavernous hall. “The acquisition is null and void.”
The registry drone whirred, its sensors scanning Yashri. “Madame Ruyan, the transfer of debt and subsequent asset seizure is legally executed. Apex Yield Corporation is the rightful owner.”
Yashri’s lips thinned. “A temporary legal glitch. My family’s legacy will not be extinguished by a whim. Seize her.” She gestured sharply at Osha. “And the brute. Eliminate them both. Reclaim what is ours.”
The two bodyguards moved with startling speed, their vibro-blades hissing as they extended. Their movements were fluid, practiced, honed for lethality. One lunged directly at Osha, the blade aimed for her throat, while the other arced around Jaro, attempting to pin him.
Jaro moved before Osha could even react. His body was a blur, a sudden, explosive force. The guard targeting Osha found his attack intercepted by a thick forearm, the vibro-blade screeching against Jaro’s bio-weave sleeve. In the same motion, Jaro’s other arm shot out, his hand closing around the guard’s wrist with bone-shattering force. A sickening crack echoed, and the blade clattered to the floor as the man’s arm hung at an unnatural angle, his face twisting in a silent scream.
Before the second guard could complete his flanking maneuver, Jaro was already on him. He spun, his leg sweeping out in a low, brutal arc, catching the man behind the knees. The guard crashed to the polished floor, his head striking the hard metal with a sickening thud. Jaro knelt, pressing his boot onto the man’s sternum, and a sharp, final gasp escaped the guard’s lips.
The entire exchange took less than three seconds. The civic sentinels, trained for crowd control and minimal engagement, stood frozen, their pulse-rifles still clutched, unable to process the brutal efficiency with which two elite blades had been neutralized. Yashri, too, was stunned, her face pale beneath her immaculate makeup.
Just as the heavy silence began to stretch, a new wave of figures entered the hall. Not municipal bailiffs, but men and women whose clothing bore the subtle, brutal marks of the Sump Wards’ most powerful factions. Rixus, the gaunt leader of the Chain-Stitches, his cybernetic eye glowing. Zola, the matriarch of the Deep-Harriers, her heavy coat draped over a frame of coiled muscle. And even the remnants of the Iron Vipers, now led by a scarred lieutenant named Vane, who had replaced their fallen leader. They moved with quiet deference, their hard gazes sweeping over the fallen guards and Yashri’s horrified face before settling on Osha.
Vane stepped forward first, his voice gravelly. “Apex Yield has shown its strength, Empress. We are here to formalize our allegiance.” He bowed, a deep, surprising gesture of submission, then dropped a heavy data-chip onto the polished floor. It was a transfer of all remaining Iron Viper assets, and an oath of fealty.
Rixus followed, a dry, rasping cough escaping him. “The Sump bows to you, Osha Kanto. Your reign unites the undercity.” He offered a small, intricate coil of synth-steel, a symbolic chain of command.
Zola, her voice a low rumble, added, “Our crops belong to you, Empress. Our people, your people.” She presented a vial of potent, concentrated neuro-stimulants, the Deep-Harriers’ most prized commodity. The leaders of the underworld were laying their power at Osha’s feet, publicly acknowledging her as their new sovereign, her authority extending from the deepest Sump up to the glittering heights of the Upper City’s financial district.
Yashri stared, utterly defeated, her grand vision of a consolidated Ruyan empire shattering into dust before her eyes. The power she had ruthlessly sought to maintain was now firmly in the grasp of the woman she had cast out.
Osha looked at the array of gang bosses, then back at Jaro, a silent question in her eyes. He gave an almost imperceptible nod, a quiet approval. She turned to the registry drone, her voice clear and strong. “Proceed with the thumbprint.”
She pressed her thumb firmly onto the illuminated pad. A soft chime echoed through the hall, and a notification flashed across the main screen.
[PURGE PROTOCOL TIMER ZEROED OUT. CITIZEN EXEMPTION: OSHA KANTO. STATUS: PERMANENT. ALL DOMICILE RESTRICTIONS LIFTED.]
On her wrist, the glowing red numbers of the timer dissolved, replaced by a simple, elegant green checkmark. The tension behind her ribs dissolved, leaving her shoulders loose and steady. She was free. They were free.
Jaro stepped forward, his hand gently cupping her cheek. His thumb brushed over the faded scar near her temple, a ghost of a past fight. His eyes, usually so guarded, held a raw, tender devotion that made her own heart swell. He leaned in, and his lips met hers, a fierce, triumphant kiss that tasted of reclaimed freedom and the promise of a future forged in fire and soil.
The kiss deepened, and the vast, impersonal hall, the stunned precinct troops, the bowing gang bosses, even Yashri’s shattered form, receded into background noise. There was only Osha and Jaro, two souls bound by shared struggle and an impossible love.
When they finally parted, breathless, Jaro’s gaze was drawn to a massive data-screen high on the wall, one that usually displayed public transportation routes or weather forecasts for the Upper City. Now, it showed a live satellite feed of the toxic, barren wasteland beyond Olaria’s dome, a grey, lifeless expanse stretching to the horizon. It was a stark reminder of the fate they had narrowly escaped. But then Jaro pointed, his expression a mixture of awe and disbelief.
Right at the edge of the dome’s energy shield, where the toxic dust met the last vestiges of Olaria’s expelled waste, a single, impossibly vibrant green sprout had just breached the poisoned soil, pushing its way towards the distant, filtered sunlight. A tiny, defiant flag of life in a realm of death. The desert was blooming.
