Chapter 4 of 10
The Cannoli Clause

Her mind raced, the cold logic of her plan clashing with the immediate, visceral threat. This wasn't her vengeance. This was a messy, unsanctioned hit. She couldn't let it happen. Not like this. Not when he was still a crucial piece of her game.
With a guttural cry, more animal than human, Tessana launched herself forward. The silky fabric of her gown tore as she slammed into Bastian, sending them both tumbling to the polished marble floor of the ballroom. A collective gasp rippled through the assembled elite. Bastian, winded, blinked up at her, a bewildered, almost hopeful expression blooming on his face.
“Tessana?” he rasped, his voice thick with surprise, “You still care…”
Her hand, still aching from the diamond necklace, connected with his jaw in a sharp, resounding slap. “Don’t flatter yourself, you imbecile! You were about to be shot!”
The red dot vanished. Above them, the grand chandeliers of the Aquilon Tower glittered, reflecting a hundred startled faces. Renzo, who had been a silent, statuesque sentinel just moments before, was gone. No one saw him slip into the shadows. No one heard the muffled thud from a distant service corridor. Only Tessana, scrambling to her feet, marked the scuffed brass doorway where he had vanished.
Bastian, rubbing his jaw, scowled. “Shot? By whom? This is merely a pathetic attempt to regain my affection, Tessana. It won’t work.”
“Your affection is the last thing I want, Bastian,” she spat, adjusting her torn gown with a dangerous glint in her eyes. “My priority is to bury you, legally. Alive. If you die now, my fun is over.” She spared him no further glance, turning to sweep from the gala, a trail of stunned whispers in her wake.
Bruno met her at the Volanti Penthouse Firm’s entrance, a fresh box of pistachio-cream cannoli in his hands. “Boss! Rough night? You look like you wrestled a particularly stubborn legal precedent.” His gaze lingered on the torn silk.
“Worse. I saved Bastian Cortessa’s life,” Tessana replied, her teeth grinding tight. “And Renzo just took out a sniper. My plans are getting complicated.”
“Renzo’s good at un-complicating things. Especially with snipers,” Bruno mused, offering her a cannoli. “But saving Bastian? That’s dedication to the long game. Respect, Boss.”
Inside the gleaming, multi-level office, the air was cool and crisp, a stark contrast to the overheated drama of the gala. Tessana moved directly to her desk, retrieving the flash drive from a hidden compartment. “Let’s get this decrypted. Every hour we delay is an hour Bastian’s backers consolidate.”
Bruno, with surprising agility for his frame, had a secure terminal spun up and ready. His massive fingers, usually adept at handling delicate pastries, danced across the keyboard with practiced ease. “Volanti encryption, next-gen lattice lock. Standard. You always were thorough, Boss. Even with your own secrets.”
The drive hummed, data streams flickering across the screen. Lines of code coalesced into financial ledgers, holding company structures, and encrypted communications. Tessana leaned closer, her eyes scanning the details, her mind piecing together the complex web of illicit transactions.
“Hold on,” Bruno rumbled, his brow furrowing. “This isn’t just Cortessa. There’s a ghost entity here, a series of off-shore accounts linked to… ‘Dolce Forno’? That sounds familiar.”
Tessana’s gaze sharpened. “Dolce Forno? The parent company of La Dolce Vita, the patisserie we seized earlier?”
“The very same! My informants told me it was just a front for money laundering, but the scale…” Bruno zoomed in on a particular transaction. “This ledger, it’s not just Cortessa’s. It’s their main conduit for the entire syndicate faction that backs him. And it’s tied to an offshore shell registered to… Livia Sordelli’s cousin, who happens to own a major stake in Dolce Forno. Bastian isn’t the mastermind here. He’s a well-dressed puppet. The real power is flowing through this storefront network.”
“Which means,” Tessana finished, a slow, predatory smile spreading across her lips, “Bastian’s commercial empire isn’t just a target. It’s a distraction. The real heart of their operation is precisely where we’ve already struck.”
“Boom! Cannoli Clause activated!” Bruno cheered, pumping a fist, powdered sugar dusting the air.
Just then, a presence materialized in the doorway, a shadow detaching itself from the deeper gloom of the firm’s archives. Renzo Mercara. He wore a fresh suit, pristine and uncreased, as if he hadn’t just returned from a bloody assignment. His eyes, dark and intense, fixed on Tessana.
“The sniper won’t be a problem again,” Renzo stated, his voice a low rumble. He didn't elaborate, nor did he need to. Bruno merely nodded, returning to his pastries.
“Good to know,” Tessana replied, a flicker of something unreadable in her gaze. She pushed away from the desk, a sudden, almost magnetic pull drawing her towards him. “We just found something significant, Renzo. The true core of Bastian’s backers isn’t his corporate empire, but an artisanal pastry chain.”
Renzo’s lips curved in a subtle, knowing smile. “I suspected as much. Bastian is too self-absorbed to be a true strategist. He’s a useful idiot.” He stepped further into the room, boots clicking sharply against the polished concrete. “That flash drive… you found the details of the syndicate council’s internal accounts, didn’t you?”
Tessana stiffened. “How did you know?”
He closed the distance between them, stopping mere inches from her. The scent of expensive cologne and something subtly metallic, like ozone after a storm, filled her senses. His hand reached out, not to touch, but to cup the space near her jaw, his thumb brushing the line of her cheek. “Because I planted it for you. And I helped fake your amnesia.”
The words hung in the air, a stunning revelation. “You… what?” Her mind reeled, the past three years a kaleidoscope of distorted memories and engineered confusion. “Why?”
“The Volanti council was fractured. Your father’s death weakened your position. You were too valuable, too brilliant, too much of a threat to their established power structures. They were going to eliminate you, or worse, force you into a marriage with one of their puppets. I couldn’t allow that. Not when your vengeance against Bastian was still a whisper of a plan, an un-ignited fuse.” His gaze was intense, unwavering, a raw confession in their depths. “I needed you safe, hidden, building your legal trap. So I made sure you forgot. And I made sure Bastian was the one who hurt you enough to remember.”
The pieces clicked into place, a terrible, beautiful mosaic of betrayal and protection. He had orchestrated her oblivion, meticulously crafted her return, all to safeguard her true self, her power, her revenge. The fury that usually ignited within her at manipulation was absent, replaced by a bewildering current of understanding, of something akin to awe. Her eyes searched his, seeing not deceit, but a fierce, possessive devotion.
His head dipped, his gaze dropping to her lips. She leaned in, the sharp pull between them sharpening the silence until static hummed against her collarbones.
“Boss! Renzo! Emergency! Pastry disaster!”
The voice, shrill and panicked, shattered the moment. Bruno, covered head to toe in powdered sugar, burst through the archives door, waving a sheaf of papers. “Bastian… Bastian found out about the patisserie seizure! He’s gone full warfare!” He held up a freshly intercepted legal injunction.
