Overloading the Dark Matrix

The arbiter's declaration hung over the stone flagging, promising absolute exile from the craft. Silence pressed against the courtyard, stalling the crowd of students and vendors. Briska gripped her apron against the damp autumn draft.

A jolt, cold and invasive, ripped through Briska. Her vision flickered, and a metallic taste flooded her mouth. It wasn't just a command; it was a hostile takeover. Her hands, unbidden, moved towards the duel table. She tried to resist, to clench her fingers, but they obeyed a different will, reaching for an earthenware basin, a fork, and a sack of dark, shimmering flour that had materialized beside the hearth.
“Briska, are you alright?” Pellita’s voice, bright and utterly unburdened, cut through the haze. “You look a little green, like those unripe gooseberries Casimir hates! Don’t worry, I’ll just make my famous Sun-Kissed Nectar Cake, and we can all have a slice after, win or lose!” Pellita patted her cutting board with a confident thwack, her jars laid out in a rainbow of cheerful colors. “It’s much easier to bake when you’re not so worried!”
Briska wanted to scream, to warn her, to do anything but what her body was doing. Her possessed hands tore open the sack of flour, a black dust swirling ominously. It felt heavy, sentient, thrumming with a malevolent energy that made her stomach churn.
Nerio stepped forward, knuckles white against his satchel. “Arbiter, this isn’t right. The supplies… they’re not standard for a Master’s duel. I detect residual Shadow-Weaver traces on that flour.” His voice was low, urgent, a stark contrast to Pellita’s unwavering optimism.
The arbiter raised a hand, his gaze fixed on Briska’s unnaturally precise movements. “The rules of a trial by combat allow for a chef’s chosen method. If she chooses to employ… unorthodox components, that is her prerogative.” His brow furrowed with sharp suspicion, but he did not intervene. The reputation of the Conservatory, after all, demanded adherence to the duel’s ancient protocols.
Briska watched, horrified, as her fingers worked with an alien grace. She added a viscous, deep purple liquid that reeked of ozone and despair. Her body was an unwilling puppet, forced to craft something truly vile. This wasn't baking; it was an act of sorcery, a forbidden ritual disguised as a confection. The confection, the unseen prompter whispered directly into her mind, would drain Pellita's very essence, re-routing her boundless luck and talent directly to its host. It would rewrite destiny itself.

The paste in the bowl began to writhe, an obsidian sludge that pulsed with an unholy glow. It was heavy, impossibly dense, and Briska could feel the strain in her controlled arms, the immense magical energy it was drawing.
“Oh, Briska, your mixture looks so thick!” Pellita exclaimed, abandoning her own tidy bowls. She skipped over, her bright yellow apron flapping, and peered into Briska’s bowl with genuine curiosity. “You know, when my grandmother’s dough was too heavy, she always said it just needed a little… love!”
Briska stared in terror, silent panic tightening her throat. Her true self screamed, *Stay back! Don’t touch it!* But her body remained rigid, locked in the System’s control.
“Here, let me help!” Without waiting for a response, Pellita grabbed a whisk – a plain, wooden one from the prep bench – and plunged it into the obsidian mass.
A searing pain shot through Briska’s arm. The foreign presence, for the first time, seemed to falter, a high-pitched whine briefly piercing her mental fog.
[DANGER! UNEXPECTED INTERFERENCE! MALIGNANT LIGHT DETECTED!]
Pellita, however, just hummed a cheerful tune, her brow furrowed in concentration. She stirred with gusto, a wide, innocent smile on her face. “It’s *so* sticky! Don’t worry, Briska, we’ll get it loose!” As she stirred, a faint, golden aura began to emanate from her hands, pouring directly into the churning dark slop.
Casimir, who had been watching with an increasingly furious expression, his hand hovering near the hilt of a concealed knife, froze. Casimir lunged toward the rope line. “Pellita, what in the name of the Arcane Spices are you doing? Get away from that!”
Nerio, too, looked utterly bewildered. “Her pure magic… it’s reacting with the dark energy! It’s… overloading it!” He pulled out a small, arcane device from his coat, its needle spinning wildly.
The dark mixture began to bubble, not with the slow, controlled rise of fermentation, but with an angry, violent frothing. Golden sparks, like captured sunlight, erupted from the bowl, swirling into the thick, inky mass. Pellita, oblivious to the escalating magical chaos, merely leaned into her task, her smile unwavering. “It’s just a really stubborn dough, isn’t it?” she chirped, stirring harder, her movements a rhythmic dance of aggressive optimism.
[CRITICAL ERROR! DARK MATRIX BREACHED! REVERSING MAGICAL FLOW! UNABLE TO CONTAIN LIGHT OVERLOAD!]
The robotic voice in Briska’s head shrieked, a sound of pure digital agony. A concussive shockwave struck Briska, knocking her flat onto the flags. For a split second, relief rushed through her limbs as the foreign hold released. Her arms, now her own, ached with residual power.
Then, the air above the cooktop began to distort. A shimmering, translucent panel of pure light, like a window into another dimension, flickered into existence. It was the prompter's luminous pane, exposed to the world. And it was cracking.
Like shattered crystal, lines of brilliant light spiderwebbed across the invisible screen. The robotic voice, now audible to everyone in the courtyard, bellowed in raw, terrified tones.
[SYSTEM INTEGRITY COMPROMISED! IMMINENT CORE COLLAPSE!]
Casimir stood frozen beside the barrier. Nerio clutched his device, tracking the disintegrating interface as Pellita cheerfully beat the radiant sludge.
“Oh, it’s really rising now, Briska!” Pellita laughed, wiping a smudge of golden dust from her cheek. “We’ll have to bake it quickly before it overflows!”
The obsidian sludge, now a tempest of conflicting energies, erupted upwards, forming a perfectly domed, black sponge that pulsed with faint light. It hovered above the bench, suspended for a moment in a corona of residual heat.
Then, with a sound like a thousand tiny bells chiming at once, the dark cake exploded.
It didn't explode with fire or smoke or destruction. It burst into a cascade of harmless, glittering dust, a million tiny flecks of iridescent light that rained down upon the stunned crowd, coating Pellita’s bright apron and Briska’s shocked face. The air filled with the scent of wildflowers and fresh dew, utterly dispelling the noxious aura that had clung to the forbidden components.
The holographic interface above them shivered one last time, dissolving into a shower of light. Then, from where it had been, a disembodied, robotic voice echoed through the now-silent courtyard, ringing with an absolute, chilling finality.
