Chapter 39: A Brother's Hope

Liar!" Robert's voice shattered the tense silence, his face contorted with pure rage. Veins pulsed in his neck, stark against his pale skin. He lunged forward, but Alistair's security detail stepped between them.
Alistair remained perfectly still, a cold, unreadable mask on his features. His eyes, however, held a flicker Lyra couldn't quite decipher – a deep sadness, perhaps, or familiar resignation.
Lyra watched, stunned, as Robert struggled against the guards. "You always knew, didn't you? About Elena! You let her die to protect your dirty secrets!" he spat, words laced with venom.
Pain twisted in Lyra's gut. Had Alistair truly known more? His promise to help her sister felt like a fragile shield against the doubt now brewing.
Calmly, Alistair raised a hand. "Robert, your accusations are baseless. Your embezzlement, however, is not. The evidence is irrefutable."
Security escorted a sputtering Robert from the office. His protests faded down the hallway.
Silence descended, thick and suffocating. Lyra’s heart pounded frantically against her ribs.
Turning to Alistair, Lyra searched his gaze. "Did you… did you really know?" Her voice was barely a whisper, desperate.
Alistair met her eyes directly. "Lyra, I suspected financial irregularities. Elena was investigating. Her findings confirmed Robert's involvement. But her accident… I didn't know the extent of his depravity until her final report. I promise you."
His words held conviction. His jaw was tight, but a shadow remained, an unspoken weight.
Later that evening, slumped on her small apartment sofa, Lyra replayed the scene. Alistair's composure, Robert's desperate accusations. It was crushing.
Her phone buzzed, a jarring vibration against her thigh. Glancing at the screen, she saw an unknown number. Normally she ignored them. Tonight, a strange compulsion urged her to open it.
A message appeared. No text, just a single attachment. Curious, Lyra tapped the thumbnail.
Her breath hitched, the image loading slowly, pixel by pixel. It was a photo, blurry, poorly lit, but unmistakable.
Gasping, Lyra sat bolt upright. Her brother, Daniel. Alive.
Tears welled instantly, blurring her vision. She rubbed her eyes furiously, needing to confirm.
It was him. Older, thinner, a haunted look in his eyes, his vibrant brown hair shaggy. His face was pale, his clothes, a faded blue jumpsuit, seemed too large for his frame.
Behind him, the background was indistinct, a jumble of metallic grey and dark shadows. A faint, stylized 'T' logo was visible on a bolted metal door, partially obscured. Thorne Industries.
Thorne Industries. Alistair's empire. Cold dread seeped into Lyra's bones, mixing with relief.
"Daniel," she whispered, her voice cracking. This wasn't a trick. This was real. He was alive.
Frantically, Lyra zoomed in, searching for more details. His eyes, though distressed, were unmistakably his. The slight scar above his left eyebrow, from a childhood bicycle accident, was still there.
Nausea rose. He looked unwell, trapped. His shoulders were slumped, his posture defeated.
Scrolling down, Lyra noticed a tiny string of characters beneath the image: 'Sector 7, Grid Gamma-9, Sub-level C.' Not a typical GPS coordinate, just a cryptic tag.
What did it mean? It sounded like a secured facility, an industrial complex, or even a hidden research lab.
Her mind raced, connecting the dots. Thorne Industries. A hidden sector. Her brother, looking like a prisoner.
Could Alistair be involved in this, too? Robert's accusations about Elena echoed. Was Alistair hiding people?
Panic tightened its grip. For years, she'd clung to hope that Daniel was just lost. This photo, however, implied he'd been deliberately kept from her.
Someone had hidden him. Someone powerful enough to keep him off the grid for years, to place him within Thorne Industries' vast, private domain.
Who would do this? And why?
Trembling, she reread the cryptic message. 'Sub-level C' suggested a basement, perhaps underground.
Remembering the security measures at Thorne Industries headquarters – the private elevators, restricted floors – Lyra felt a chill. Alistair’s world was a labyrinth of secrets.
This wasn't just about Robert's fraud. This was about her brother, missing for five long years, pointing back to Thorne and Alistair.
The anonymous sender. Who would send this? A well-wisher? An enemy? Or someone inside Thorne trying to expose a truth?
Gripping her phone, Lyra felt a surge of cold determination. She had to find Daniel. This was her chance, a fragile hope.
But how could she approach Alistair now? The man who promised to help her sister. The man whose company might hold her brother captive.
Distrust gnawed at her, a bitter taste. His careful words, his controlled demeanor, suddenly seemed a carefully constructed facade.
Was he ignorant, or a master manipulator?
Her heart ached for Daniel, for the years stolen from him. For the innocent hope she'd harbored of him living a new life.
This photo changed everything. It transformed her search from a desperate plea to a calculated mission.
Tread carefully. One wrong move could jeopardize Daniel, and perhaps even her sister's treatment.
Studying the blurry image, Lyra imprinted every detail. Daniel's head tilted slightly, his fingers splayed against his thigh in silent protest.
Faint shadows behind him suggested a confined space. This was a prison.
Her brother had been stolen, and hidden. For a long, long time. The trail led directly into the heart of the empire.
The implications were staggering. If Alistair knew, if Thorne Industries was complicit, then her entire world was a lie.
Lyra's gaze hardened. She would uncover the truth, no matter the cost. Daniel was waiting.
