Chapter 9 of 10

The Final Vent

723 words

The high-pitched whine sharpened to a drill bit against the skull, shuddering through Tashkor’s teeth. Mirev’s skin rippled, her elegant features momentarily stretching and compressing as if viewed through a liquid lens. She stumbled back, forearms raised against the light, mouth working without sound. Zandrav leaned his weight onto the control yoke, parchment skin stretched taut over hollow cheeks, baring yellowed incisors in a desperate snarl. He clawed at the console, his bony fingers working a final, frantic sequence of inputs, determined to complete the siphoning. “No!” Jevri cried, his voice thin and reedy, a stark contrast to the machine’s roaring protest. He lunged forward, not at Zandrav, but instinctively towards Mirev, as if his meager frame could shield her from the coming onslaught. Tashkor lunged across the grated floor. This wasn’t about maintaining the Nadir-Kiln anymore; it was about settling a century of scores. He saw Zandrav’s face, not as the pathetic ruin before him, but as the arrogant lord who had once condemned his family to the mines, the patrician who had sneered at his groundbreaking work, the man who had *stolen* Jevri’s youth. A bile-sour heat burned behind his ribs, stripping away whatever caution remained. With a guttural roar, Tashkor tackled Zandrav, slamming the ancient man’s head against the polished durasteel of the main console. The impact was sickeningly dull, but Zandrav’s grip remained. His clouded, yellowed pupils fixed on Tashkor’s face, manic panic twitching through his lips. “Fool!” Zandrav rasped, spittle flying. “You condemn us all!” Tashkor ignored him. His fingers, calloused and quick, danced across the interface panel, overriding Zandrav’s attempts. He didn’t just stop the drain; he rerouted it. He initiated a failsafe, a rarely used, brutal protocol designed to protect the system from complete collapse by sacrificing a single, high-capacity host. It was meant for a last resort, for a sentient being to willingly immolate their entire lifespan to avert catastrophe. Zandrav, with his centuries of hoarded vitality, was the perfect, unwilling subject. [System State: Primary Capacitor rerouted. Target designation confirmed: Lord Zandrav. Total-drain loop initiated. Life-force dissipation: Extreme.] The Chrono-Ledger’s voice, usually cold and precise, now resonated with an almost frantic energy. Zandrav's eyelids retracted until the red veins around his irises stood stark. Air sawed through his throat, raw and rattling. The shimmering air that had surrounded Mirev now clung to Zandrav, a hungry shroud. His skin, already papery, began to flake, drying at an impossible rate. Cracks split the gray flesh of his knuckles, weeping dry flakes before spreading upward across his cheekbones. “No! I am… immortal!” Zandrav shrieked, a high, thin sound that was swallowed by the escalating whine of the Kiln. “I will not perish!” The energy flowing into him was not mere aging; it was an annihilation. His hair, already white, turned brittle and began to fall in clumps, revealing a skull that seemed to shrink before their eyes. His spine snapped backward with a dry pop as centuries of cultivated life-force combusted in a few scorched seconds. His screams became a choked gurgle, then a rasp, then nothing but the winded wheeze of a deflating bellows. Jevri had recoiled, burying his face into Mirev’s shoulder. Mirev stood rigid, knuckles pressed hard into her own collarbones as she tracked the patriarch's collapse. Tashkor, however, simply stared, his gaze fixed on Zandrav’s rapidly dissolving form. A harsh, copper-edged triumph coated Tashkor's tongue. He had promised Zandrav suffering, and the Kiln had delivered, devouring the elite’s stolen immortality with a ravenous hunger. In six seconds, Zandrav came apart. Where the once-vain lord had stood, there was now only a small, drifting pile of fine, gray dust on the polished durasteel floor, stirred faintly by the Kiln’s internal currents. It was as if he had never existed, wiped from the fabric of time itself. The turbine squeal dropped an octave. A thin hush settled over the platform, marked only by Jevri’s wet exhalations and the turbine's baseline hum. Tashkor’s chest felt abruptly hollow, the spent fury leaving only cold grease and static in its wake. But the moment of respite was cruelly short-lived. The Chrono-Ledger’s primary readout flashed deep carmine. Its mechanical voice, now devoid of any urgency, droned, cold and absolute, into the stunned silence. [Capacitor destroyed. Vacuum detected. Final stabilizing host required immediately, or stasis field will collapse in sixty seconds.]
