Chapter 3 of 10
The Third Grace Tastes Like Apples
1.3k words
The inverted citadel of Ouros groaned, a sound like ancient stone splitting. The tilting intensified, a sickening lurch that sent chunks of obsidian dust raining down from the vaulted ceiling. Below, the abyss widened its maw, a swirling vortex of crushing pressures and abyssal horrors. The very air shrieked as arcane arrays buckled, spitting sparks like dying stars. The remaining Acolytes of the Veiled Blade scrambled blindly. Their earlier groveling forgotten, they scrambled, some clawing at the gravity-defying walls, others screaming as the tilt became too steep, sending them sliding towards the open maw of the void. Weapons clattered, prayers choked in throats.
Jurok, who had been attempting to scoop more of the stew from the ruined cauldron, lost his footing. He slid across the polished floor, a wide, slightly manic grin still plastered on his face even as he narrowly avoided plummeting into the chasm. “Such… turbulence!” he yelled over the din, eyes bright with an unshakeable glee that felt entirely out of place.
Nivara, braced against a jagged spire of shattered rock, watched the chaos with a tightening dread that had nothing to do with her own peril. Her gaze was fixed on Tazien. He stood amidst the pandemonium, tranquil and detached, a faint frown marring his brow. Not from fear, but from a profound irritation. He looked like a master craftsman whose apprentices had just made an egregious error.
He sighed. It was a short, sharp expulsion of air, laden with an almost comedic exasperation. “Must I do everything myself?” he muttered, the words barely audible above the grinding roar of the failing stronghold.
With a flick of his wrist, a gesture as casual as shooing a fly, Tazien’s hands began to move. Invisible strands of force, like threads of pure thought, erupted from his fingertips. They were not spells, not incantations, but extensions of a mind that understood the very fabric of existence. Geometric forms, luminous and complex, bloomed in the air around him, coalescing into glowing, skeletal frameworks. These frameworks, intricate and perfect, pulsed with a silent power. He wasn’t casting magic; he was *re-designing* reality.
The glowing structures shot outwards, anchoring themselves into the distant, unyielding cliff face from which the citadel had always hung. They weren’t physical ropes; they were pure, immutable architectural logic made manifest. They hummed, vibrating with a resonant frequency that defied the laws of the realm. The tilting of the stone complex stuttered. The grinding roar diminished to a low thrum. Slowly, agonizingly, the inverted court began to correct itself, hauled back from the precipice by Tazien's cold geometry.

The acolyte who had been sliding precariously close to the edge of the abyss found himself halted mid-slide, suspended by the returning stability. He stared at Tazien, not with fear, but with a dawning, terrifying reverence. The others were silent, their panic replaced by a chilling awe. This wasn’t power they understood. This was something else entirely.
Before anyone could speak, a new sound ripped through the air: the thrumming of a colossal grav-propulsion engine. From the higher tiers of Venezaar, a shimmering, multi-tiered ziggurat descended. It was a smaller, more ornate version of the Sunken Court itself, crafted from polished moonstone and crowned with a spire of crackling azure plasma. This was the mobile throne of a Grace, a personal citadel designed for swift, devastating judgment.
The ziggurat settled, hovering just beyond the newly anchored platform. A single figure, wreathed in shimmering azure light, emerged onto its lowest platform. Lord Vael, the Third Grace, arrived with the immaculate poise of a minor despot. His robes were woven from condensed starlight, his eyes the color of a winter sky, sharp and unforgiving. A circlet of raw aether crackled above his brow. He was sculpted to perfection, his sneer sharp as sheared glass.
“A persistent insect, aren’t you, Tazien?” Vael’s voice boomed, amplified by an innate resonant authority, echoing across the chasm. It was a voice accustomed to unquestioning obedience. “And you, Nivara. My finest templar. To consort with such heresy… it grieves me to watch a soul throw away her purpose. You have defiled your oath, betrayed your station, and spat upon the very Graces who grant you breath.”
Nivara met his gaze without flinching. Her hand instinctively went to the hilt of her blade, but it was not to draw it against Tazien. Lord Vael, however, mistook the gesture.
“Prove your loyalty, templar!” Vael’s voice intensified, lashing out like a whip. “Impale this abomination. Drive your blade through his heart, and I shall consider your treachery a momentary lapse, a test of faith. Do it now, while he drains his reserves holding this falling rock.”
A ringing silence fell, broken only by the thrum of the two suspended citadels. All eyes, those of the acolytes, Jurok, and even Tazien, fell upon Nivara.
Nivara squared her stance, lifting her chin with rigid defiance. She looked at Tazien, then back at Vael. Her hand tightened on her blade, but the blade remained sheathed.
“No,” Nivara said, her tone level and completely barren of doubt. It wasn't a plea, but a statement of immutable fact. “I will not.”
Vael’s azure eyes flared with incandescent fury. His beautiful face contorted into a mask of pure wrath. “Insolent whelp! You dare defy a Grace? You dare choose… this *thing* over your gods?” A torrent of celestial sparks crackled around him, setting the fringe of his robes ablaze with light. “Then perish with him!”
Tazien’s gaze, which had been fixed on Nivara, slowly shifted to Vael. A cold, knowing smile, devoid of mirth, touched Tazien’s lips. It was a smile of ancient recognition, of a debt finally coming due. “Took you long enough, *Vaelen*,” he murmured, his voice too soft for anyone but Nivara to hear. The name, an archaic variant, seemed to vibrate with a forgotten history.
Then, without a word, Tazien simply *let go*. The luminous geometric anchors, which had held the court steady, flickered and vanished. The entire hanging bastion, freed from its invisible tethers, lurched violently. It plummeted. Not gradually this time, but with a terrifying, stomach-lurching freefall. Assassins screamed, Jurok roared with delight. Nivara gasped, bracing for impact.
Three seconds. That was all it took. Three heartbeats of uncontrolled descent. In that infinitesimal window, as the stone bulk plunged toward the lethal abyss, Tazien blurred. He didn’t fly; he simply *was* there, a phantom of motion, covering the impossible distance between the falling fortress and Vael’s hovering ziggurat. His hand, glowing with a faint, dangerous light, plunged into the chest of the stunned Third Grace. There was no struggle, no defense. Vael's mouth fell open in sudden, comprehending terror, meeting Tazien's impassive stare.
With a wet tearing sound, Tazien ripped something shimmering and azure from Vael’s chest. It pulsed with vibrant, agonizing light, a small, crystalline node of concentrated aether. Vael let out a choked gasp, his radiance sputtering as his frame went limp. Before the still-plunging masonry had even completed its next lurch, Tazien had returned, casually re-tethering the structure with another flick of his wrist. It snapped back into place, jarringly stable, hanging once more over the swirling void.
Tazien stood amidst the stunned silence, the small, pulsating azure core held between his thumb and forefinger. He observed it with a clinical detachment, then brought it to his mouth. With a faint crunch, like biting into a ripe fruit, he consumed it. The stolen essence, raw and biting, flooded down his throat. A faint, almost imperceptible blue light briefly pulsed beneath his skin, then faded.
