Chapter 1 of 10
T-Minus Sixty Cycles and a Bag of Cumin
1.2k words
The obsidian block, heavy as a fallen star, had compressed Tazien for what felt like an eternity. Below, the abyss of the Sunken Court of Ouros swirled with a sickly phosphorescence, a dizzying spiral of green and purple that promised instant oblivion to anything that fell from this upside-down fortress. Heretics were meant to be crushed, their essence absorbed into the void, their cries echoing for the pleasure of the nine sovereigns. Tazien, however, merely exhaled, a cloud of dust puffing from his lips. The thousand-ton slab of solidified shadow, designed to break souls, shuddered. A hairline fracture spiderwebbed across its surface. He yawned, a wide, languid stretch of his jaw, and the block exploded.
Shards of dark stone shrieked through the air, carving gouges into the metallic floor plates before clattering into the swirling chasm below. Tazien sat up, brushing dust from his simple, roughspun tunic, his movements unhurried, almost bored. The impact crater where he’d been was now a shallow depression, radiating heat. A faint blue luminescence flickered into existence before his eyes, a series of fragmented glyphs and numbers. It hummed, a low, mechanical thrum that vibrated through his very bones.

[T-Minus Sixty Cycles until Fission. Estimated Yield: Continental Vaporization.]
Tazien blinked, a single, slow blink. "Sixty cycles? That's far less convenient than the last time." He’d been aiming for eighty.

[Reward for Defiance of Terminal Judgement: One Bag of Primordial Cumin Seeds (Grade Avarice).]
A small, burlap sack materialized with a soft pop, landing neatly in his lap. Tazien picked it up, sniffing the contents. A rich, earthy aroma, complex and warm, wafted upwards. "Avarice grade, indeed. The floating ziggurats always did hoard the best spices." He tucked the bag into a pocket, already formulating a new recipe.
From the high-arched entryway, a figure stepped into the vast execution chamber. Nivara, High Templar of the Saffron Guard, moved with a controlled grace that spoke of rigorous discipline and an unyielding will. Her armor, polished to a dull gleam, reflected the faint glow from the abyss. She carried a ceremonial glaive, its blade sharp enough to part shadows. Her face, usually a mask of serene focus, showed a flicker of disbelief. The execution platform, meant to hold a man in an eternal prison of force, was a smoking crater. The block, obliterated.
And the condemned heretic was sitting upright, meticulously gathering stray chips of stone.
"Tazien," Nivara's voice was a low, resonant murmur, carefully neutral. "The decree of the First Grace, Velian, was absolute. Death by immolation and compression. Your soul was to be scattered." She didn’t specify *how* he was still sitting there.
Tazien looked up, a faint, almost imperceptible smile playing on his lips. "Oh, that. I found it rather stuffy." He pulled a small, ornate pot from a seemingly empty fold in his tunic, setting it down in the center of the smoking crater. He then produced a small, intricately carved ladle, followed by a handful of dried vegetables, some chunks of what looked suspiciously like forbidden boar meat, and a small, flagon of water. "Do you happen to have a spare fire crystal? My furnace is a bit… scattered at the moment."
Nivara stared, her mind struggling to reconcile the impossible. This was casual disregard for the fundamental laws of their world, for the very decree of the pantheon. She didn't respond, her fingers digging into the shaft of her glaive.
Just then, a flurry of motion erupted from the shadows near the grand arch. Six figures, clad in midnight-blue cloaks adorned with the silver sigil of a coiled viper, lunged. The elite ‘Venom Fang’ killers, known for their silent strikes and deadly precision, moved as one, their obsidian daggers aimed for Tazien’s vitals. This was a failsafe, a final, definitive eradication. Even if he survived the block, he wouldn’t survive them.
Tazien didn’t even glance up. His hand, still holding the ladle, moved in a fluid, almost lazy arc. The first killer, a blur of shadow and blade, found his strike effortlessly deflected. The ornate handle of the ladle met the ambusher's wrist with a dull thud. The man cried out, his dagger skittering across the floor. The second assailant, aiming for Tazien’s neck, had his blade caught by the ladle’s bowl, which then spun, redirecting the force into a clumsy pirouette that sent him sprawling.
One by one, with a series of clanks and thwacks, Tazien parried, deflected, and disarmed. He used the ladle with the effortless precision of a master duelist, though his focus remained entirely on arranging his stew ingredients in the pot. He didn't move from his seated position. A dagger, thrown with lethal intent, was scooped from the air and tossed aside with a flick of his wrist. He hummed a low tune, a forgotten melody of a world that no longer existed.
Nivara watched, unblinking. The Venom Fang were legendary. They slaughtered templars, toppled minor lords. And Tazien was fending them off with a *ladle*, without even looking.
The squad leader, a gaunt woman with irises pale as rime, screamed in rage and lunged, her twin daggers a blur. Tazien, finally reaching for the cumin bag, shifted slightly. The ladle, still in his other hand, met her strike with a chime that resonated through the chamber. The leader’s daggers shattered. A pulse of energy, faint and golden, emanated from the ladle, momentarily illuminating the room. The woman stumbled back, pupils dilated, then dropped to her knees. Her disarmed squad followed suit, foreheads lowered in trembling awe.
“The Celestial Ladle… the Hearth-Star’s Scion…” the leader croaked, her voice trembling. “The ancient texts… it spoke of a weapon of the First Forger, wielded by one who cooks over ashes of judgment. We have trespassed against a prophesied one!” She prostrated herself, pressing her forehead to the cold metal floor. Her squad mimicked her, their bodies shaking.
Tazien, oblivious to their sudden, fervent worship, finally found the cumin. He sprinkled a generous amount into the pot, inhaling deeply. “Ah, perfect. Just the right amount of aromatic spice to cut through the richness.” He glanced at Nivara. “Still no fire crystal? Fine. I suppose a little raw soul energy will have to suffice.” He pressed a finger to the base of the pot. A low, blue flame, impossibly hot, flickered to life beneath it. The stew began to simmer, its fragrant steam rising, thick and inviting.
The aroma, rich with forbidden spices and succulent meat, spread through the Sunken Court. It was a scent that had been outlawed for millennia, a pleasure reserved only for the Graces themselves. Tazien stirred contentedly, the ladle scraping softly against the pot’s bottom.
Suddenly, the air crackled with power. The chamber’s lights dimmed, and the abyss below glowed with an angry, crimson hue. A spectral projection, towering and incandescent, solidified in the center of the room. It was the First Grace, Velian, her form radiating pure, frigid light. Her face, usually serene, was contorted into a mask of terrifying fury. Her voice boomed, echoing off the high ceilings, shaking the very foundations of the upside-down fortress.
“Mortal! You dare defile my sacred judgment with your insolent survival? You dare profane this hallowed ground with the stench of *spices*? Bow, worm, or face obliteration!”
