Chapter 6 of 10

Scalding Tea and Chewed Armor

1.2k words

“Did you really think a cave-in would stop the Guild’s finest?” The words echoed, a sneering promise of retribution, as a figure cloaked in midnight-blue scaled hide armor stepped from the newly opened breach in the bedrock. Behind him, four more similarly clad shock troops followed, their crystalline short-swords already humming with faint mana. Their helmets, shaped like predatory fish, gave them a faceless, menacing air. The lead figure, a burly man with a jaw like a cobblestone, surveyed the chaotic farm with an expression of disgust. His gaze snapped to Vellari, then to Brambol, who was now carefully depositing the severed armored forearm at Cozari’s feet, nudging it with his snout. “Rinaldo Varr, elite officer of the Guild’s Obsidian Trident,” the man announced, his voice booming with forced authority. “And you, Vellari Danto, are under arrest for treason against the Vetrano Consortium. The Guildmaster sends his regards, and his condolences for the coming pulverization of this entire… *cesspool*.” He wrinkled his nose at a particularly fragrant pile of compost. Cozari, however, wasn't listening. He bent down, picked up the relic, and frowned. “Oh dear, this really isn’t suitable for gardening,” he mused, testing the heavy black plate on a clod of soil. “And you, sir, look utterly parched. Running from a cave-in is terribly dehydrating, I imagine. Do you prefer your chamomile with a splash of mint or a hint of citrus?” Rinaldo Varr blinked. His four elite troops exchanged confused glances. This was not the bloodcurdling roar of a S-Rank beast, nor the desperate plea of a cornered renegade. It was… a tea offering. “I prefer your head, farmer!” Varr roared, brandishing his blade. “And your treacherous accomplice’s! Stand down, or face annihilation!” Cozari tutted, shaking his head. “Such aggression before breakfast. It’s no wonder you look so stressed. Honestly, a proper cuppa would do wonders for your disposition. Pipetto, darling, the tea sprinklers, if you please! And fetch our guests some of that delightful squash loaf. It’s still warm from the oven.” Pipetto, who had been cowering behind a colossal cabbage, yelped. “T-tea sprinklers, Cozari? But… it’s a combat zone!” “Nonsense, it’s a hospitality zone!” Cozari chirped, beaming at the intruders. “Everyone needs a little refreshment.” [System Alert: ‘Hospitality Zone’ activated. Threat Level: Confused. New Title Unlocked: ‘Connoisseur of Chaos’.] With a nervous whir, the automated sprinkler system, usually reserved for fine misting of delicate herbs, whirred to life. Instead of cool water, streams of steaming, golden-brown brew erupted from the nozzles, arcing directly towards the captain and his squad. It smelled distinctly of honey and flowers. “What in the blazes—?” Varr began, but the scalding spray hit him first. The chamomile tea, superheated by Cozari’s mana-infused geothermal pipes, sizzled against his dark scales. A faint, acrid smoke rose as the protective coating on the scales began to bubble and peel. The soldiers shrieked as the intensely hot spray stung their exposed skin through the seams of their gloves. “By the Void! It burns!” one soldier cried, frantically trying to wipe away the sticky, floral brew. “It’s just chamomile, dear! Excellent for soothing frayed nerves!” Cozari called out, completely oblivious to the melting armor. “Pipetto, did you remember the honey? Sweetness is key!” Varr, his plating steaming and starting to warp in places, roared in fury. “You absolute lunatic! This is not just tea, it’s corrosive! My armor… my priceless, ceremonial armor!” He lunged, blade raised, but Cozari remained perfectly still, a warm smile on his face. Before Varr could cover half the distance, a blur of rust-colored fur launched itself forward. Brambol, seeing the agitated man as a new playmate, met him mid-stride. The dread-lupine wasn’t attacking; he was pouncing, tail wagging, a low, playful growl rumbling in his chest. The captain, caught off guard, stumbled and fell, his blade clattering to the floor. Brambol, all several tons of him, pinned the Guild captain to the flagstones, a massive, slobbery tongue already licking at the man’s face. Then, with an almost surgical precision that belied his playful demeanor, the dread-lupine began to *unwrap* his squirming toy. Teeth as long as daggers carefully hooked into the obsidian scales, prying them free from their fastenings. There was a sickening *pop* as the first pauldron came off, followed by a *snap* as a greave was peeled away, revealing the man’s pristine, but now very vulnerable, Guild uniform beneath. “He likes shiny things!” Cozari explained cheerfully to the remaining, tea-sprayed squad, who were now struggling to maintain their footing on the rapidly growing, slick baked loaf that Pipetto had just launched from a repurposed seed cannon. “Brambol, darling, leave the man his dignity! He’ll catch a chill!” Vellari planted her spear haft solidly into the loamy loam, its tip humming with barely contained mana. Her posture stiffened, balance shifting forward into a strike stance. “Rinaldo Varr,” she called, her voice clear and resonant, cutting through the chaos of peeling armor and yelping guards. “You speak of treason. I call it justice. Guildmaster Ignaro seeks to destroy this place, to destroy *him*,” she gestured to Cozari, who was now trying to offer Brambol a sliver of zucchini bread, “Ignaro fears what he cannot control. The Consortium’s monopoly, your entire gilded cage of power, is a lie built on the suffering of those below. Cozari offers true healing, true sustenance, freely. I have seen it. I have tasted it.” She squared her stance against the remaining soldiers. “You serve a tyrant. I serve a farmer. I renounce the Vetrano Guild and all its corrupt tenets. From this moment, I am Vellari Danto, protector of this farm and all who toil within it.” A gasp went through the remaining soldiers, momentarily distracted from the scalding tea and the rapidly expanding dough that was now cementing their boots to the floor. Pipetto, seeing his chance, fumbled with a new vial, his hands surprisingly steady. “Here goes nothing!” he squeaked, uncorking it and tossing it into the air. It didn’t explode. Instead, a shimmering haze of cerulean mist expanded outwards, settling over the tea-drenched, pastry-encrusted squad. Instantly, their flailing limbs froze mid-air. Ice crystals bloomed over their armor, encasing them in shimmering, frigid cocoons. They stood rigid, eyes wide with horror, unable to move a muscle. Pipetto, for once, had created something that worked exactly as intended. [System Alert: Alchemical success! ‘Pippeto’s Perpetual Permafrost’ created. Varr, teeth clicking in furious disbelief, somehow managed to move one hand, encased in a now-thawed glove, towards his belt. With a surge of desperate strength, he slammed his fist down onto a small, crystalline device. A blaring, crimson signal flared into the air, piercing the labyrinth’s gloom. It was an emergency beacon, one reserved for only the gravest threats. Rinaldo’s voice, though strained and chattering from the cold, rang out with a chilling finality. “Ignaro! The farm is compromised! Target coordinates locked! Execute… the *Veridian Protocol*! Full mana-bomb deployment!” The cavern bedrock trembled. A distant, resonating hum began to build, a sound like a thousand collapsing stars, growing louder, closer. A single, colossal shadow, not cast by any light source within the Malagro Catacombs, began to fall from the main shaft above, swallowing the faint glow of the city far, far away.
