The ground continued to heave, a symphony of tortured earth and guttural squeals. Ruby-fronded screamers, all gnarled roots and snapping maws, burst from the soil Cozari had so lovingly tilled. They twisted, stretching their needle teeth towards the nearest flesh, which happened to be Pipetto’s rapidly chattering knees.
“A-a-a-aggressive flora!” Pipetto shrieked, stumbling back, his hands already fumbling for the satchel at his waist. A small glass vial, filled with a shimmering violet liquid, clinked against another, then another.
Brambol, meanwhile, let out a joyful bark, tail thumping a frantic rhythm against the pulverized stone. He lowered his massive head, nudging a particularly agitated tubeweed with his snout, treating its thrashing, razor-sharp fronds like an invitation to play.
Vellari, however, saw only the threat. Her eyes, usually so sharp and calculating, narrowed to slits of cold fury. Her spear was back in her grip, its shimmering tip humming with concentrated mana. She lunged in a low arc, severing three screeching rootlings at their stems. They kicked once, then wilted into inert clumps of dirt.
“Cozari! Don’t just stand there!” she barked, her voice tight with adrenaline. “These things are venomous! Get behind me!”
Cozari, oblivious to her urgency, was already kneeling. His hands, usually so gentle, now moved with a terrifying precision, not to destroy, but to *harvest*. “No, no, no,” he muttered, his brow furrowed in concentration. “These are juvenile; their root systems are still delicate. If we rip them out, we’ll damage the taproot. They won’t propagate properly!” He reached for a particularly large specimen, its serrated edges snapping within inches of his fingers.
“Are you insane?” Vellari yelled, lunging forward. The tubeweed whipped a spiked tendon toward Cozari’s outstretched fingers. It lashed outward in a red arc. Vellari threw herself sideways, driving her shoulder into Cozari's ribs and bowling him into the mulch.
They rolled across the turf while her spear clattered away. Cozari smacked into the loam, Vellari pinning his shoulders flat. Her leather-wrapped knuckles dug into his collarbone, smelling faintly of dried thyme and weapon grease. Amber specks flecked her irises beneath the dungeon's fungal glow.
“You nearly lost three fingers,” she rasped, breathing hard. The tubeweed shrieked in frustration, its fronds flailing wildly nearby.
Cozari, however, seemed more concerned with the moss beneath them. “This luminous *Lichen Lumina*,” he murmured, his eyes distant, almost dreamy. “It’s remarkably nitrogen-rich. Excellent for fostering spore growth. I wonder if it would pair well with the Star-Crossed Squash…”
Vellari shoved off him with an angry snort, red rushing up her neck. She snatched her spear off the loam. “You are impossible!” Pivoting on her back heel, she drove the point through another four tubers. The blood-red sheen faded from their ribs, leaving only wilted stalks.
Pipetto, meanwhile, had managed to unstopper a vial. “Stand back!” he squeaked, his voice cracking. “I’ve concocted a… a highly volatile alchemical deterrent! It’s designed to repel aggressive root systems!” He hurled the vial with a mighty, if somewhat clumsy, arc. It flew true, shattering against the knotted flank of the largest screamer.
Instead of repelling it, a flash of bile-green discharge wrapped around the root cluster. Tendrils thickened into fibrous trunks. Russet crowns inflated into jagged wooden scythes. The monster surged upward until it scraped the ceiling, a shrieking mountain of animated briars. Its maw, now the size of a carriage wheel, dripped with a viscous, corrosive sap. Its high-pitched shriek deepened into a throaty roar that vibrated through the very stones of the cavern.

“A brier-titan?” Cozari breathed, leaning forward with genuine delight. “Such vigorous growth! What did you put in there, Pipetto?”
“I… I don’t know!” Pipetto wailed, dropping his satchel. “A bit of condensed moon-dew, some ground blight-moth wings, a dash of concentrated… oh, perhaps the concentrated *growth accelerator* was a bad idea!”
The brier-titan roared again, its massive vine-like arms lashing out. One snagged Brambol, who, instead of fighting, let out a delighted yelp and began to pull back, his massive paws digging into the earth. He was playing tug-of-war with a creature that could crush them all, his tail wagging furiously. The cavern roof, already unstable from Ignaro’s previous attack, began to creak ominously, small pebbles raining down.
Morzanto the Ashen, who had been patiently observing the chaos from his lawn chair, novel still in hand, let out a long, suffering sigh. He slowly rose, his skeletal form remarkably agile despite its ancient appearance. He set his book carefully on the chair, then reached into the pocket of his tattered robes. He pulled out not a mythical sword, but a tarnished, rusty spoon.
With a casual flick of his wrist, Morzanto tossed the spoon. It spun end over end, a mundane utensil in a world of magic, and embedded itself with a soft *thwack* directly into the Chlorophyll Colossus’s glowing core. The colossal weed-golem froze, mid-roar. Its body began to glow, then shimmer, then slowly, gracefully, it dissolved into a shower of brilliant green motes of light, leaving behind only a pile of rich, dark earth and the rusty spoon, still quivering slightly. Morzanto retrieved his spoon, wiped it on his robe, and returned to his lawn chair, picking up his novel as if nothing had happened.
Cozari, ever the opportunistic farmer, was already sifting through the remains of the weed-golem. “Remarkable decomposition rate!” he exclaimed, his hands delving deep into the warm, earthy pile. “And look!” He pulled out a single, pulsating seed, about the size of his fist. It glowed with an internal, soft violet light, intricate silver veins tracing patterns beneath its smooth surface. “It’s beautiful! It’s the legendary… the *Star-Crossed Squash* seed! I can feel the mana humming from it!”
