Chapter 1 of 10
Blood-Lupines and Bat Guano
1.1k words
A guttural snarl, sharp as splintered bone, ripped through the humid air of the Catacombs. Cozari Vento, humming a tuneless ditty about soil aeration, merely tilted his wide-brimmed straw hat. A shimmering ripple of displaced air, the tell-tale sign of an S-Rank Stalker-fiend, zipped directly for his prize patch of 'Midnight Bloom' lettuce. Most prospectors would have shrieked, fumbled for a core-extracting knife, or simply dissolved into a puddle of fear. Cozari, however, simply sighed.
“Brambol, dear fellow, watch the compost heap! It’s almost ready for the Star-Crossed patch!” he called out, his voice a warm, booming counterpoint to the dungeon’s perpetual chill. Before the fiend, a creature of pure predatory darkness and serrated claws, could even finish its lunge, a colossal, shaggy form erupted from behind a thriving row of bioluminescent fungi. Brambol, a Sanguine hound the size of a gondola, let out a joyful, earth-shaking bark that vibrated the very stalactites above.
The night-prowler, a blur of obsidian razor-flesh, attempted to pivot, but Brambol was faster. With a playful, almost clumsy swipe of a paw that could splinter granite, the great beast intercepted the creature’s primary attacking appendage. There wasn't a roar of pain, only a sickening *thwack* as the phantom limb, glistening with residual mana, detached clean from its body. The S-Rank beast hissed, a sound like a thousand angry vipers, and melted back into the gloom of the cavern, leaving behind a faint, acrid smell of ozone and terror.
Brambol, oblivious to the mortal threat that had just briefly graced their humble farm, pounced on the still-twitching appendage. His massive tail thumped a joyous rhythm against the packed earth, sending clouds of nutrient-rich dust into the air. He pranced back to Cozari, the severed shadow-limb held delicately in his jaws like a particularly interesting stick, his intelligent, amber eyes gleaming with expectation.
“Oh, Brambol, you marvelous beast!” Cozari chuckled, reaching down to scratch the hound behind his ear. “Such a good boy! But no, we don’t play fetch with S-Rank Stalker parts. They leave a terrible mana residue on the squash. Goodness, you nearly trampled the ‘Whisper-Root’ sprouts!” He gently pried the appendage from Brambol’s maw, dropping it into a waiting discard bucket. The Dread-Lupine whined, nudging Cozari’s hand with his wet nose, clearly wanting another round.
[Congratulations, Lettuce Lord of the Abyss! You have successfully defended your precious greens from a sentient shadow! Reward: One (1) 'Seed of Blinding Brilliance'.]
Cozari beamed, doing a little jig among the hydroponic troughs. “A Seed of Blinding Brilliance! Just what I needed for the fungal wall. Oh, System, you spoil me!”
[Warning: Over-watering detected in Sector Gamma-7. Immediate consequence: Spawning of two (2) ‘Grin-Weeds’. Happy munching!]
Cozari’s smile faltered only slightly. “Grin-Weeds? Already? Drat. I *knew* I gave the ‘Sun-Kissed Spinach’ an extra spritz.” He peered at a patch of particularly verdant spinach, where two tiny, toothy green shoots were already wiggling aggressively, their miniature, razor-sharp leaves beginning to unfurl. “Well, Brambol, looks like we have some weeding to do. Later, boy. Good work, though! Come on, we need to tidy up this mana residue. Wouldn’t want it upsetting the nutrient balance.”
He pulled a hand-trowel from his belt, his movements economical as he scraped away the faint, oily sheen left by the intruder.
As he hummed, Cozari noticed a slight bulge in a large, burlap sack tucked beside a towering mushroom cluster. This particular sack, labeled ‘Premium Bat-Guano: Malagro Special Reserve’, was his latest black-market acquisition. He’d paid a ludicrous sum for it, hoping its mana-dense properties would supercharge his Star-Crossed Squash. But the bulge… it seemed to be *moving*.
He knelt, tapping the sack. “Hello, little fellow? Did a cave-cricket find its way in?”
A muffled sneeze, surprisingly human, emanated from within. The sack twitched violently, then suddenly, with a sound like tearing parchment, it *exploded*. Bat guano, rich and pungent, showered Cozari in a fine, dark mist. He blinked, wiping a smudge from his cheek. When the dust settled, a small, pale man with wild, soot-streaked hair and a pair of spectacles askew on his nose was sprawled amongst the scattered plant-meal, shivering violently.
“G-gnagnargl… the *smell*! And the… the *pitch-black*!” The man scrambled backward, spectacles sliding down his bridge. He looked up, catching sight of Brambol, who had ambled over to investigate the commotion, his tail giving a tentative thump. The man shrieked, a high-pitched sound that bounced off the cavern walls.
“A *Dread-Lupine*! And it just ate… oh, *my* stars, I’m in the Malagro Catacombs! I’m going to *explode*! The pressure! The mana-flux! My research! My notes!” He started hyperventilating, his small hands fluttering like trapped birds. “I only wanted to smuggle myself to the *surface*! My fertilizer shipment was supposed to go *up*!”
Cozari, completely unfazed by the sudden appearance of a traumatized human in his fertilizer, merely tilted his head. “Oh, bless your heart, you poor dear! You’ve had quite the journey, haven’t you? You must be Pipetto! The Guild of Alchemists mentioned a… *volatile* intern who went missing. Fancy meeting you down here! No worries, we’ll get you sorted.” He clapped his hands, a sound that made Pipetto jump nearly a foot in the air. “Brambol, fetch the good chamomile! Pipetto, my boy, you look like you could use a nice, calming brew and a good long sit. And once you’re settled, I’ve got a mountain of Grin-Weeds that need pulling. You’re hired!”
Pipetto gaped, a single tear tracing a clean path through the guano on his cheek. “H-hired? To… to *farm* in a place that has… *Dread-Lupines* and… and *exploding* fertilizer? I’m an alchemist! A *failed* alchemist, but still!”
“Nonsense, Pipetto, you’ll be perfect!” Cozari boomed, already bustling towards a small, cozy nook with a perpetually simmering kettle. “We’ll get you a nice, sturdy apron. You’ll love the ‘Dragon’s Breath’ peppers; they’re quite a challenge. And the ‘Star-Crossed Squash’ is going to need a lot of tender love and care. Think of the elemental infusions! Just imagine the mana-rich compost!”
Before Pipetto could formulate a coherent objection, let alone another panicked scream, a deafening *CRACK* ripped through the cavern. The greenhouse ceiling, a marvel of Cozari’s resourcefulness crafted from reinforced cavern stone and luminescent crystal panes, simply *shattered*. Shards of crystal rained down, accompanied by a shower of dust and dislodged rock. A figure, wreathed in the debris, dropped through the gaping hole. She was tall, lean, and utterly furious, her dark, practical armor gleaming under the ambient light. Her silver-tipped spear, still humming with residual impact energy, was leveled with chilling precision, aimed directly at Cozari Vento’s throat.
