The Moonlight Harvest

The frail body of Bai Yulu, while aesthetically passable for an orthodox novice, was a severe impediment. Her meridians, thin as silken threads, could barely channel enough power to carry a satchel of low-grade talismans, let alone a chest of Sunstone Ingots. A proper heist required the ability to transport significant weight, quickly.
“The situation calls for… fortification,” Kuang Mian murmured, ignoring Elder Lin’s continued histrionics. She needed to body-temper Bai Yulu. Urgently. The Celestial Crane Peak, with its sprawling courtyards and vast, poorly secured resource caches, was practically begging to be plundered. The Lunar Herb Compound came to mind, a notoriously well-guarded plot famed for its rare Moon-Dew Lilies and Star-Vein Roots, both exceptional ingredients for strengthening the physical form.
The Assembly Hall dissolved into a cacophony of panicked whispers and pompous indignation. Kuang Mian slipped away, a phantom in the chaotic throng, her steps light and unhurried. The martial brothers and sisters, too consumed by the unfolding drama, barely registered the quiet departure of the 'grieving fiancée'.
Under the cover of the peak’s moon-drenched shadows, Kuang Mian navigated the winding paths towards the Lunar Herb Compound. The air grew heavy with the scent of night-blooming flora, a rich, earthy aroma that tickled her nostrils. High stone ramparts, laced with shimmering wards, surrounded the plots, but to a former Demonic Sovereign, they were mere suggestions. A quick scan revealed the familiar shimmering threads of a high-grade defensive array – Elder Lin’s signature Nine-Heavens Strangling Array. Crude. Predictable.
She stepped through the main gate, a smirk playing on her lips. A low hum resonated through the paving stones, and suddenly, the enclosed courtyard transformed. Vines, thick as a man's arm, erupted from the ground, their thorny tendrils snaking towards her with predatory speed. The moonlight shifted, casting illusions of spectral beasts within the foliage, their eyes glowing with malicious intent. The very air grew dense, pressing down with crushing force designed to fracture an intruder’s ribs.
“Childish,” Kuang Mian scoffed. The Nine-Heavens Strangling Array relied on brute suppression and sensory overload. A novice would crumble. An orthodox cultivator would attempt to dispel it with pure qi. A demon, however, knew its true weakness: it was a blunt instrument. It consumed a prodigious amount of vitality to maintain its many facets. Starve it, and it collapses.
She didn't bother dodging the thorny vines. Instead, she channeled a sliver of her demonic qi, a sharp, precise spike of raw destruction, into the nearest root. The vine shrieked, a sound like tearing silk, and withered to ash. She moved with fluid grace, a dance of devastation. Each strike was aimed not at the visible threats, but at the hidden focal nodes humming beneath the earth, the very arteries of the array. The spectral beasts dissipated as their power source faltered. The crushing pressure lessened. Within moments, the courtyard, which had been a whirlwind of thorns, returned to absolute stillness, the vines frozen, half-grown and limp.
Amidst the silenced chaos, a single flower pulsed with a soft, ethereal glow. A Moon-Dew Lily, its petals unfurling in the pale light, releasing a faint, sweet perfume. Perfect. She plucked it, its cool stem resting in her palm, already sensing the robust vitality within.
A gasp tore through the quiet. “Yulu!”
Kuang Mian turned, the glowing stem in hand, to find Feng Zihuan standing at the compound archway, staring at her with dropped shoulders. He looked disheveled, his usually immaculate robes askew, his golden hairpin slightly askew. He looked as if he had run all the way from the Assembly Hall.
“You… you came here?” His voice was a raw whisper, thick with unspent emotion. He took a hesitant step forward, his gaze fixed on the lily, then on her face, searching for something she wasn’t offering. “To… to gaze at the moon?”
Kuang Mian blinked. The moon was a pale disc in the sky. She glanced at the lily, then back at him. Gaze at the moon? She was here for the most valuable medicinal herbs on the peak, to fix Bai Yulu’s pathetically weak body so she could steal more. The market value of a fresh Moon-Dew Lily, unblemished by array interference, was staggering. She weighed it in her mind, mentally calculating transport costs.
Feng Zihuan’s eyes misted. “Yulu… my dearest Yulu. I have been a fool. A blind, arrogant fool! I knew your heart was wounded, but to think… to think you would seek solace in such… such desperate, melancholic beauty!” He took another step, his voice cracking. “Do you hate me so much, that even the moon’s cold embrace is warmer than my presence?”
He dropped to his knees on the torn flagstones, tears tracking paths through the dust on his cheeks. “Forgive me, Yulu! Forgive my neglect, my pride! I swore to protect you, and instead, I allowed your spirit to wither! I will change, I swear it! I will cherish you, protect you, I will rebuild everything I have broken!” His voice rose, echoing off the high walls, a dramatic, impassioned plea.
Kuang Mian, still holding the Moon-Dew Lily, stared at him. Was he offering compensation? An apology could be monetized, perhaps. Pity rarely was, but righteous guilt… that had potential. She hummed thoughtfully, turning the lily over in her fingers. The herb itself was worth more than his emotional outburst, but the fallout from his public display might be useful. She gave a small nod, a gesture of dismissal, and turned to walk away, the lily clutched securely.
Feng Zihuan watched her go, his apologies dying on his lips as she disappeared into the shadows without a backward glance. He slumped, his shoulders shaking with silent sobs. He had driven her to this. Driven her to moonlight trysts with spectral beauty, driven her to find solace in the very plants she once tended with such innocent joy.
The silence cracked. A furious roar, amplified through brass transmission talismans, shook the stones beneath Feng Zihuan’s knees. “The Lunar Herb Compound has been breached! The Nine-Heavens Strangling Array… shattered! And I sense it! The residual ash… the taint of the demonic realm!”
