Chapter 6 of 10

A Resonance of Ruin

1.3k words

The stone manor shuddered again, plaster dust snowing from the ceiling as another cannon blast rent the air. Kord stood rigid beside the sill, inspecting the iron treads grinding down the outer road. Sena sobbed, clutching her side, the rough fabric of her tunic darkening with fresh blood. Her terrified stare flickered between Jynna and the distant rumble of the approaching army. "Invaders at the main gate," Kord stated, his voice flat, knuckle bones stark white on his sabre hilt. “A siege. And they’re not here to negotiate a marriage contract.” He turned to Jynna, his gaze piercing through her carefully constructed facade. “You have a choice, Jynna. Stay hidden. Let me handle this. Or expose yourself. The Daris family will not hesitate if they perceive a threat.” Jynna’s smile didn’t falter, not a twitch. It was a fixed, porcelain mask over a mind churning with calculations. Sena was her conduit, her eyes and ears within the viper’s nest of the Brox household. To abandon her would be to blind herself, to accept a tactical disadvantage. And the Matriarch’s public challenge? Unacceptable. A giggle, light and airy, bubbled from her throat. “Oh, Commander! Such a serious face for such a *jolly* occasion!” Jynna skipped towards their armoire, her movements unnervingly light for the gravity of the moment. “It’s been so dreadfully dull lately. A little commotion is just what we need to liven things up, don’t you think?” Kord watched, unblinking, as she retrieved a small, intricately carved wooden box. It was no larger than her palm, fashioned from dark, polished blazewood, with delicate brass filigree depicting whimsical creatures dancing amongst cogwheels. It looked like a child’s toy, utterly harmless. Kord, however, had seen her ‘harmless’ stun-baton. He knew better. “What is that?” he demanded, his voice edged with a warning. He had agreed to her tech, but this… this was too fast, too bold. “A little music, my dear Kord,” Jynna chirped, tapping the lid. “Every good battle needs a soundtrack, doesn’t it?” She glanced at Sena, offering a reassuring, if terrifyingly bright, smile. “Don’t worry, Sena. Your sister-in-law won’t let anyone hurt you. Not on my watch.” Before Kord could react, Jynna was already out of the chamber, her laughter echoing down the hallway, darting toward the iron threshold. Kord swore under his breath and followed, Sena limping behind him, a strange mix of terror and nascent hope blooming in her eyes. They reached the flagged forecourt, where estate sentries scrambled behind pillars under a barrage of cannon fire. Heavily armored ‘Grim-Treads’ – repurposed mining vehicles bristling with Gatling-cannons – spearheaded the assault, their treads chewing up the decorative cobblestones. Dozens of Grub-Hunters in scavenged plate swarmed behind with heavy iron axes and pneumatic bolt-throwers, shouting hoarse war cries. Sena gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. This was not a skirmish; it was an annihilation. Jynna, however, seemed oblivious. She danced through the panicking sentries, holding the timber box forward like a trivial trinket. Her path led straight toward the lead rig, where the warlord himself stood in greasy hides, his nose flattened and scarred from street brawls. His eyes, like chips of obsidian, narrowed as he spotted the small, giggling woman skipping towards him. "What in the blighted soot is this?" the warlord bellowed through an iron horn. "A jester? Brox, has your kennel gone mad?" Jynna paused ten paces from the Grim-Tread, her smile widening. “Oh, good sir! Just a little gift for such a grand entrance!” She curtsied deeply, then with a brisk flick, unlatched the brass hasp. No musical notes tinkled out. Instead, an invisible wave of pressure radiated outwards, a silent, sickening hum that vibrated deep in the bones. Immediately, the air around the attacking mercenaries fractured. The thick, cast-iron blades of their axes groaned, then spontaneously *shattered*, fragments flying like shrapnel. The crude bolt-throwers crumpled inward, their internal mechanisms grinding to dust. Across the flags, the diesel roar of the war-rigs sputtered into silence as pistons sheared within their blocks. The mercenaries screamed, clutching their heads, dropping to their knees. The sonic resonance, specifically tuned to disrupt specific metal alloys and human inner ear fluid, turned their world into a vortex of agonizing noise and disorienting nausea. Their eyes rolled back, foam flecking their lips. The commander himself dropped his speaking horn, clawing at his ears as bile spilled across his leathers. Jynna closed the box with a soft click. The agonizing hum vanished, leaving only retching invaders and shredded weaponry scattered across the flags, punctuated by Jynna's bubbly chuckle. “Oh my, what a mess!” she exclaimed, surveying the crippled army with innocent delight. “Someone should really clean that up.” The house riflemen lowered their barrels, staring dumbfounded at the wrecked raiding party. Kord watched from the portico beside Sena, noting the clinical detachment behind Jynna's cheerful mask. Matriarch Brox bustled out onto the stones, skirts rustling and jowls mottled with rage. She surveyed the damage, her eyes falling on the pristine music box in Jynna’s hand, then on the broken men and machines. Her greedy gaze sparked with cunning. “You!” she shrieked, pointing a trembling finger at Jynna. “What have you done, you idiotic girl? Ruined everything!” Then, seeing an opportunity, her expression contorted into a triumphant smirk. “No! Wait! This… this is *my* invention! My sonic disrupter! I’ve been working on it for years!” She puffed out her chest, turning toward the Guild magistrates peering through the broken perimeter. “Yes, my grand design!” she announced, striding towards Jynna, her hand outstretched. “You see, Mirelle here, in her simple-minded way, merely activated it. But the genius, the true innovation, is all mine!” She snatched aggressively at the carved casket. Jynna’s smile didn’t falter. It only widened, a terrifyingly sweet expression. “Oh, Matriarch, are you sure? It’s a very… *personal* little device.” Before Matriarch Brox could snatch it completely, a sharp, crackling arc of cerulean lightning erupted from the brass filigree. The Matriarch screamed, a high-pitched, almost inhuman sound, as the biometric security system coursed through her, searing her flesh. Her body convulsed violently, her hair standing on end, her expensive gown smoking. She dropped to the cobblestones, twitching uncontrollably, her eyes wide and unfocused, reeking of ozone and burnt hair. “Oh dear,” Jynna giggled, retrieving the box with an innocent air. “It only likes *my* touch. Perhaps you should read the instruction manual next time, Matriarch. Such a silly goose!” The Guild officials, the remaining house defenders, and the dazed mercenaries stared dumbly at the smoldering dowager. The image of the ‘idiotic’ girl casually zapping her abusive mother-in-law into a smoking heap would be etched into their memories, an undeniable public humiliation. Matriarch Brox was thoroughly, spectacularly discredited. Jynna turned, a triumphant glint in her eyes, ready to savor her perfectly executed victory. But her smile faltered for the first time. Standing at the now-open main gate, a grim tableau of power and authority, was Velia Daris. She wasn’t alone. Behind her, a full battalion of Capital Enforcers, clad in polished black armor and wielding pulse-rifles, marched in formation, their cold, metallic presence radiating menace. Velia’s expression was a mask of cold fury, her eyes fixed on Jynna with lethal intent. "Mirelle Brox," Velia's voice rang clear across the square. "By decree of the High Council and the Daris Patriciate, this property is placed under military quarantine. You are under arrest for illegal munitions development. Secure the perimeter and apprehend the suspect!" Jynna’s perfectly constructed world, for a fleeting moment, felt like it was crumbling around her. She had won the battle, but Velia Daris had just upped the stakes beyond anything she could have anticipated. And now, armed with nothing but a music box, Jynna was surrounded.
