Chapter 1 of 10
The Resonant Sabotage
1.1k words
The grand assembly hall of the Vrostian Conservatory, typically a cavern of echoing silence, thrummed with a low, anxious murmur. Humid air, thick with the scent of damp stone and ozone, clung to the velvet-draped acoustic baffles, doing little to absorb the nervous energy of a thousand students. High above, immense bioluminescent fungal clusters pulsed with a sickly violet glow, casting long, wavering shadows across the dais where Professor Cadmus—a man whose face seemed perpetually carved from disappointment—intoned regulations for the upcoming semester.
Yulva Marik, slumped against the cold, grimy stone of a back column, felt her eyelids fighting a losing battle. The drone of his voice was a lullaby, more effective than any sleep draught. Her custom-built acoustic focuser, ‘The Somnus’—crafted for its superior dampening properties, not its amplified pitch—rested precariously on the floor beside her, a dull, polished orb of dark vitreous mineral.
She’d barely registered her turn was next, a demonstration of fundamental sonic harmonization, when a sharp nudge from Janko, her perpetually bouncing sidekick, startled her awake. “Yulva! He’s calling you, you slumbering virtuoso! Come on, before he revokes your resonance privileges!”
Janko, a whirl of frizzy dark hair and oversized spectacles, practically vibrated with unspent energy. His whispers were stage shouts. “Don’t mess it up! I heard the faculty’s been siphoning off student sound-waves to power the lower district’s new Arcane-Anvil. A poorly tuned sphere generates chaotic frequencies, perfect for… *extraction*!”
Yulva merely grunted, pushing herself upright. The thought of losing her privileges, even if it meant more sleep, was a hassle she couldn’t be bothered with. She shuffled towards the dais, the obsidian sphere clutched loosely in one hand. Liska, her step-sister, offered a saccharine smile from the front row, her pale fingers clasped delicately. Liska’s eyes, however, held a peculiar glint, a predatory focus Yulva, in her exhaustion, habitually ignored.
Yulva reached the designated spot, a circular plinth embedded with resonant sigils. She set the orb gently onto the stone. The casing, usually inert until activated, began to hum, a soft, almost imperceptible tremor that ran through her hand. It felt… *wrong*.
Professor Cadmus gestured curtly. “Begin, Marik. Let’s not waste the entire morning on your languor.”
Yulva, too tired to even feel annoyed, merely extended her hand, ready to channel the requisite resonant pitch. A low, internal groan built within the volcanic glass. It vibrated violently, no longer a hum but a deep, churning growl that made the teeth of everyone present ache.
“W-what in the name of the Chord?” the instructor stammered, his face blanching.
The Somnus, designed to absorb, not emit, ignited. A brilliant, emerald light flared from its surface, intensifying with terrifying speed. The air crackled. Yulva had just enough time to register the heat, the overwhelming *pressure*.
Then, the orb *exploded*.
A deafening, wet *CRACK* ripped through the hall. The force of it knocked Yulva backward, sending her sprawling across the smooth stone dais. Shards of black glass shrieked through the air, thankfully dissipating into harmless dust before reaching the crowd. But the shell’s true payload was a thick, viscous goo, radiant with a furious fungal emerald, that erupted outwards, drenching Yulva from head to toe. It shimmered on her hair, dripped from her eyelashes, coated her uniform in a sticky, luminescent slime.
The entire hall gasped. A collective intake of breath that echoed off the high ceilings. The silence that followed was absolute, save for the dripping of green sap from Yulva’s nose.
Liska, among the stunned faces, watched Yulva, a triumphant, almost manic grin fighting to break through her carefully composed expression. Her vision, however, was suddenly assaulted by jagged, glowing crimson text that ripped through the air above Yulva’s prone form, visible only to her.

Liska’s heart pounded. This was it. The public humiliation, the destruction of her unique sphere, the potential Hollowing for damaging Conservatory property. Yulva, so sensitive, so insecure beneath her apathy, would break. Liska could feel it. The System would finally connect.
But Yulva didn’t weep. She didn’t even flinch. She just lay there on the dais, soaked in glowing green slime, blinking slowly. A slow, tired smile stretched across her sap-drenched face.
“A suspension?” she murmured, her voice barely audible, thick with the glow-sap. “Oh, bless the city grid. A whole week… of glorious, uninterrupted *sleep*.” Her smile widened into genuine, blissful contentment.
The murmuring started again, this time a confused, incredulous buzz. The instructor, still reeling, pointed a trembling finger. “Marik! This is an outrage! An abject lack of control! You are hereby suspended for… for a full cycle! One week of re-evaluation, effective immediately!”
Janko, meanwhile, vaulted onto the dais, completely ignoring the teacher. He pointed dramatically at the glittering remnants of The Somnus. “See! I told you! They sabotaged it! The faculty! They wanted her unique resonance signatures! Probably to power an administrator's luxury sky-yacht! It’s all a conspiracy, I tell you, a grand faculty-wide plot to…”
Yulva, completely ignoring Janko’s frantic exposition, pushed herself into a more comfortable position. The cool stone felt surprisingly good against her cheek. The green goo, while sticky, wasn’t painful. She’d been far more uncomfortable after her last all-nighter.
With a soft sigh, she closed her eyes. The drone of Janko’s conspiracy theories, the indignant sputtering of the proctor, the shocked whispers of the students—it all faded into a pleasant white noise.
Within seconds, Yulva Marik, covered in luminous slime before the entire gathering, was snoring softly. A gentle, rhythmic rumble carried through the vast hall, proof of her unshakeable apathy.
Above her, Liska watched in horror as the glowing crimson text above Yulva’s head contorted, reforming into a new, terrifying message.

A piercing, agonizing phantom ringing exploded inside Liska’s ears. It wasn't merely a sound; it was a physical tearing sensation, like hooks dragging through her brain. Her vision blurred, the edges of the hall swirling into a painful vortex. She clapped her hands over her ears, a whimpering cry escaping her lips, but it did nothing. Blood, warm and sudden, trickled between her fingers.
The crimson text above Yulva flashed again, brighter, more urgent, its jagged lines burning into Liska’s failing sight.
