Chapter 9 of 10

The Shadow Unbound

The Heavenly Sky Blossom unraveled under the blur of blind palms. He was completely out cold, yet the ancient muscle memory etched by Gu’s deranged drills dictated every sweep of his hands. Thread by thread, blue botanical fibers dissolved into molten amber. Old Master Gu’s shrieks rang directly inside the marrow of the youth's skull: *"Faster, boy! The outer chamber is collapsing! Channel the slag into your spleen! Do not drop the base!"* Ruohan did not drop it. His palms struck the iron flank of the crucible with a flat *clang*. The alloy groaned. Then, silence swallowed the hall, thick and sudden, before an upward torrent of blinding light blew straight through the kiln's mouth. The blast tore upward, punching through four stories of cedar rafters and glazed jade shingles, shattering the pavilion roof to matchsticks. Sky showed through the yawning gap—turbulent, churning clouds tinged with an ominous sulfur flare. Ruohan gasped, air flooding his scalded lungs as he dragged himself up onto trembling knees. Resting against the palm of his charred right hand was a round, smooth pearl. It didn't burn. It drew the heat from the surrounding air, coated in a fine layer of gray dust that gave off the smell of old rain. The Sovereign Ash Pill. "Impossible," murmured an elder from the front tier, trembling as he spilled his teacup over his silken hem. "An unconscious nine-turn completion..." Ruohan looked past the judges. He looked toward the high box. Meng Tianxiao was already standing. His knuckles were clamped onto the balustrade, splintering the aged cedar. His breath came in ragged, wheezing whistles. He looked at the shape of the pill, then at the peculiar, non-lethal ash-sealing mudra Ruohan still held—the gentle twist of the thumb that spared the vessel from heat shock. "The Gentle Hearth Stance," Tianxiao rasped. Recognition cleaved through his face, stripping away the cold mask of the Meng clan leader. "You... you lived." The realization struck the man like poison. An immense emotional convulsion shuddered through Tianxiao's chest, and with it, the barricade he had built against his internal horrors failed. A sickening crack echoed across the arena. Tianxiao arched his spine, a guttural groan ripping from his throat. The skin across his cheeks blackened, veins puffing out into jagged, pitch-colored ropes. The stolen Azure core inside his ribcage—taxed beyond its limit by years of holding back the generational curse—burst its wards. "Run!" Tianxiao managed, his voice tearing as tar-like miasma poured from his teeth. "Ruohan... get away!" Then the dark miasma consumed him. The clan head expanded, bones popping like wet firewood. Black smog poured from his pores, hardening into carapace and jagged spines. The human figure vanished under a hunchbacked, four-armed horror of writhing ink, its jaws dripping acidic sludge onto the high balcony. The wood dissolved on contact. Pandemonium swallowed the arena; elders threw each other down the stairwells, while disciples scrambled over the arena walls in terror. Song Yueli leaped onto the platform beside Ruohan, the silver ring of her drawn blade cutting the falling soot. "Ruohan, get back! It's an Abyssal Fiend transformation. Its core is berserk. We have to cut through its heart before the miasma blankets the district!" "No!" Ruohan barked, lunging forward to catch her scabbard before she could lunge. "The heart is where the seal is holding! If you pierce him, he dies, and the miasma levels the entire city! We don't kill him!" "He is not a man anymore!" she cried, though she halted her strike. "He's still my father!" Ruohan shouted, his voice cracking. "Fan Bo! Move your lazy beast right now! Northern quadrant!" Fan Bo poked his sweaty face from behind an overturned marble bench. "Pudge, move your fat tail! If we die, there are no roasted buns!" The massive, armored pangolin let out a rumbling snort, charging toward the northern marker stones with astonishing speed. It dug its claws deep into the granite, its metallic scales clattering shut to form an unyielding anchor. "Yueli, your sword!" Ruohan tossed a copper grounding rod toward her. "Align your blade with the beast's shell! We aren't fighting him—we're creating an alchemical vent!" Yueli understood immediately. Without another word, she drove the rod into the floor, her sword tip pinning the metal rod to complete an ancient dispersing triangle. A pale line of qi surged between the pangolin, her blade, and Ruohan's boots. The horned beast roared, leaping from the broken balcony with a crash that cratered the arena floor. Black claws whistled through the air, aimed directly at Ruohan's throat. Ruohan did not flinch. He did not draw a weapon. He calculated the arc, the trajectory, the air pressure of the swing—over-engineering his movement down to a fraction of an inch. He dropped beneath the monstrous arm, stepped into the foul cloud of caustic smoke, and shoved his left hand toward the creature's gaping maw. "Swallow it!" Ruohan roared. He forced the Sovereign Ash Pill directly past the jagged teeth, jamming it deep into the monster's throat. At the same exact moment, he jammed his right palm flat against the beast’s sternum. His artificial meridians screamed in protest, fire racing along his arms as he opened his internal gates. "Return to me!" he screamed. The blue resonance inside the monster flared. Ruohan clamped down with his soul, physically dragging the stolen, corrupt Azure essence out from his father’s chest cavity. The viscous blue light tore out in thick tendrils, reversing the theft committed years ago. As the essence flooded back into Ruohan's chest, his own veins hissed, threatening to burst from the sudden, massive influx of power. The obsidian shell around Tianxiao began to rot away into harmless gray smoke. The four limbs shrank. The carapace cracked, shedding flakes like dead skin, revealing the frail, gray-haired man beneath, gasping for breath as he collapsed into his son's arms. "Ruohan... why?" Tianxiao wheezed, his pale eyes trembling. "You should have... let me take it to the grave..." "Because you're terrible at lying," Ruohan choked out, his vision swimming with tears. Above them, the sky split open. The roof had vanished, and now the Heavens looked down upon the returned essence. The clouds gathered into a vortex of blazing purple. The Heavenly Furnace Tribulation, summoned by the union of the pill's refinement and the reclaimed core, gathered its fury into a single, blinding pillar of divine wrath. *"You idiot!"* Old Master Gu screeched inside Ruohan's mind, panic turning his spectral voice shrill. *"The transfer isn't finished! The lightning sees two vessels linked by one soul! One of you must bear the full impact, or the heavenly fire will reduce you both to grease! Cut the link, Ruohan! Cut it or die!"* The purple thunder roared down.
