The first volley of incandescent plasma bolts shot across the plains, streaking toward the heart of the Citadel, aimed straight at Orkhan.
Inside the high vault, Orkhan’s mind churned. The Silent Regent’s will, a torrent of alien cognition, surged against his own, threatening to drown him. Images of sterile, perfected worlds, of realities meticulously *cleaned* to their fundamental patterns, flashed through his awareness, each one a hammer blow against his sanity. The chorus of disembodied voices, now a roaring crescendo, chanted a single, resonant truth: *Purify. Erase. Conform.*
He was losing. The ancient titan inside him possessed terrifying scale. His human consciousness, built of guilt and cold calculations, seemed paper-thin beside it. Yet, one image persisted, piercing the cosmic cacophony: Aybik’s face, pale and terrified, her small hand clutching a broken music box, then her unblemished smile as it played again. That flicker of warmth, that singular, impossible connection, became his anchor.
*No. Not her. Never her.*
With stubborn fury, Orkhan braced himself, relying solely on focused intent. He clawed back a single second of clarity. His joints ground together as he resisted the entity's drive to preserve the Soul-Tether, ignoring how the stone floor fractured into sharp quartz shards.
He didn't speak the words. He didn't need to. He projected the command across the plains, hammering it straight into Commander Boran's skull:
“THE RELIC. SHATTER IT.”
Boran flinched, a sharp, involuntary jerk that nearly sent him tumbling from his observation platform. The words had materialized in Boran's skull with the force of a hammer, Orkhan's cadence warped by a chilling resonance. He looked up, past the incoming plasma bolts, past the roiling distortion above the Citadel. He saw Orkhan, still glowing, still shifting, but now, for a fraction of a second, he seemed to be *struggling*.
“The artifact… he wants it broken,” Boran muttered. Not an ambush. A crack in the armor. “He’s resisting it.”
His cynicism warred with his instinct for survival. Could this be a trap to draw his shock troops within reach? Yet the sky was splintering above the peaks, threatening everyone. If Orkhan, the being currently hosting this calamity, was actively trying to *stop* it, then Boran had a new, temporary ally.
“Cease fire on the Citadel!” Boran barked into his headset. “Assault Squadrons Delta, Gamma, Epsilon! Form up and breach the outer perimeter! Your objective: locate and eliminate the artifact in the inner hall! Provide covering fire for local defenders if their target aligns! Move!”
Specialized shock troops moved out, clad in leaden suppression suits engineered to snuff out anomalous fields. As the ironclad dreadnoughts redirected their disruption beams to clear the path, Boran tracked the rapid advance across the broken ridges.
Within the throne hall, ozone hung thick. Aybik screamed, a small, piercing sound that Orkhan felt like a fresh wound. Jagged, translucent spikes erupted along the flagstones, coalescing into jagged, predatory shapes. They moved with mechanical hunger, facets catching the jagged flashes overhead. These were the Silent Regent’s antibodies, the world’s immune response to its own corruption.
“Princess! Behind me!” Izel’s voice was hoarse with strain. Her twin curved sabers swung fast, deflecting a faceted claw that snapped toward Aybik. The First Knight pinned the girl behind the throne's granite plinth for cover. She had marked the tension in Orkhan's posture before the distortion enveloped him. He was resisting from within.
Kestar's palace guards, breastplates scorched from the siege, piled through the archways. They found their sovereign wreathed in blinding discharge while mineral horrors tore free of the masonry. They did not hesitate. Steel met hard silicate with shrieks of grinding spark, buying fleeting seconds.
Then, a jarring explosion ripped through a section of the outer wall, showering the Sanctum with dust and debris. Imperial shock troopers breached the gap, boots grinding over gravel as heavy emitter rifles tracked the chamber. Ignoring the local guards, their sights locked onto Orkhan and the radiant focal core in his grip.
“Hold fire!” barked a lead soldier. “Identify the target artifact!”
A broad operative named Jorn leveled his carbine. “The glowing cluster in his grip!”
“Invaders!” snarled a garrison lieutenant, hoisting his round shield.
“Stand down!” Izel barked, severing a glass limb that reached for Aybik. She wheeled toward the imperial unit. “He ordered it broken! That core is consuming him!”
Jorn held his fire. Boran's redirect had been explicit, and the sky outside was unraveling into violet static.
“Command relayed the order,” Jorn said over the din. “Shatter the artifact. First Knight, is that the catalyst?”
“It is!” Izel yelled back, parrying another strike. “Strike it now!”
A fresh cluster of mineral beasts lunged from the ruptured masonry. They crashed into the mixed ranks, locking imperial rifles and native halberds into the same line. Plasma bolts and steel hacked through brittle limbs while stone dust choked the air. Jorn fired point-blank into a quadruped hound of quartz while a kingdom swordsman speared its flank. Nearby, Izel carved a path toward the dais, ducking beneath stray fire.
Orkhan held his ground against the mental deluge. Aybik's scream broke through the deafening drone. Instead of channeling the core, he clamped down on it, treating it as an anchor dragging him under. He countered the entity's impulses with stubborn refusal. Tendons strained against the alien surge as he shoved his arm outward, thrusting the core into the open air as a clear target.
The underlying presence tried to pull his arm inward to assimilate the device, but Orkhan forced his fingers rigid. He fixed his gaze on Aybik, who clung to the base of the dais with chalk-white knuckles.
“Get back,” he rasped, the words rasping through layers of static. “RUN!”
