Chapter 9 of 10

The Voivode's Due

The air thickened with a sickly-sweet scent, like overripe plums left too long in the sun. Above the sanctuary valley, the twin moons bled into each other, their silver and obsidian light merging into a bruised purple stain across the zenith. This was it. The alignment. Milena felt the tremor run through the earth first, a low thrum that vibrated up through the soles of her worn boots. She stood in the heart of the Grove of Whispers, a clearing ringed by gnarled arbores whose boughs dripped with bioluminescent moss. Before her, a shallow basin carved from living rock held a concoction of her blood, the burnt honey nectar, and pulverized crystalline dust Ksenia had unearthed from the warding stone. The mixture pulsed with a faint, internal light. “They’re here,” Ksenia’s voice was a low growl from the edge of the clearing. She was a shadow, melted into the deep emerald foliage, her twin blades, _Vorona_ and _Zmey_, gleaming faintly at her sides. Her stance was coiled, ready to spring. Stanimir stood beside Milena, a colossal silhouette against the deepening gloom. His broad shoulders were tense, but his face, usually a mask of weary endurance, held a new, formidable resolve. The fiery brand on his chest pulsed with a dull, insistent rhythm, no longer searing him, but now a beacon, a conduit. A chorus of guttural cries ripped through the twilight, followed by the heavy thud of multiple bodies crashing through the undergrowth. The Elder Voivode emerged from the treeline, flanked by a dozen of his elite blood-guard, their crimson cloaks stark against the deepening shadows. His face was a mask of cold triumph, his lips thin, curving into a predatory smile. He raised a hand, and his guard froze, like statues carved from malice. The Voivode's gaze swept over Milena, then Stanimir, lingering on the glowing basin. “So, the little Bloom prepares her own sacrifice,” the Voivode purred, his voice like rustling dry leaves. “And the cursed beast, a ceremonial offering. How poetic. You save me the trouble.” He took a slow, deliberate step forward, his eyes fixed on Milena’s throat, a visible thirst in their depths. “Did you truly believe you could escape your purpose, child? Your blood calls to me. It sings of forgotten power, of an empire reborn.” Milena met his gaze, the fear a cold knot in her stomach, but she pushed past it. Her hands, still trembling slightly, moved to trace the intricate sigils Ksenia had drawn around the basin. Each line, each curve, was a channel. She focused, drawing on the deep hum of the loam, on the burning connection that now tied her to Stanimir. She felt the primeval magic stir beneath her feet, a slumbering leviathan beginning to awaken. It was terrifying, and exhilarating. “You wanted my blood,” Milena said, her voice clear, stronger than she felt, “You have it.” She dipped her palm into the glowing mixture, the warm liquid spreading across her skin, igniting a strange, raw vitality within her veins. The air crackled. The Voivode stiffened, surprise cracking his arrogance. He felt the pull, an irresistible current drawing him deeper into the clearing. This was more potent than he had anticipated, more raw. “Foolish girl,” he sneered, but his movements quickened. He started to chant, a low, guttural incantation meant to siphon the draught, to claim it. His blood-guard stirred, preparing to surge forward, but Ksenia moved first, a blur of motion. She launched herself from the shadows, blades a silver flash, engaging three of the elite guard simultaneously. Her movements were economic, brutal. A guttural cry as one fell, a swift cut, another collapsing. She was a whirlwind of death, her focus absolute, her ferocity boundless. Stanimir, meanwhile, had moved. Not defensively, but with a terrifying, unbridled aggression. His massive frame collided with the advancing Voivode guard like a battering ram. The pain that had shackled him for a century was muted, replaced by a surge of raw, untamed power. His fists, usually careful and gentle, became weapons of stone and fury. He tore through their ranks, a primal roar erupting from his chest, the sound shaking the very ground. No longer suffering, he was pure, unstoppable vengeance. The brand on his chest flared, a controlled inferno. The Elder Voivode, momentarily distracted by the chaos engulfing his guard, pressed closer to Milena. His chant grew louder, more urgent. He stretched a hand toward the basin, toward the pulsating light, a hungry predator closing in for the kill. “The power is mine!” he shrieked, his voice sharp with desperate longing. “It will break my chains! It will make me a god!” He reached to drag the power into him, intending to overturn his withered curse into absolute dominion. Milena watched him, a strange calm settling over her. Her hand was still immersed in the basin, her connection to the ground, to Stanimir, a vibrant, humming chord. She felt the reservoir crest, a tidal wave of old magic rising, swelling, ready to burst. The Voivode’s triumphant smile warped into a grimace as the draught erupted. But it did not flow to him. Instead, the radiant force, pure and uncorrupted, bypassed his grasping hand, his hungry incantations, and slammed into Stanimir with the force of a thunderclap. The fiery brand on Stanimir’s chest exploded. Not with destructive force, but with a brilliant, blinding white light that ripped through the air, shaking the very stones of the valley. The curse, the elder pact that had bound him to ceaseless torment, shattered. The spectral flames that had marked him for generations, no longer contained, surged outwards, a torrent of pure, blazing power, seeking their original source. The Elder Voivode watched, horror cracking his pallor, as the freed, burning essence of Stanimir’s curse, a century of agonizing fire, engulfed him completely.
