Chapter 2: Resonance of Static

1.5k words

Footsteps echoed down the empty hallway, hurried and uneven. Running late was supposed to be Sayori’s trait, not his. Sweat beaded along his collarbone as he reached the familiar wooden door of the literature club, his breath rattling in his chest like loose change. Sliding the door open, he braced himself to offer a quick, breathless apology to the girls. Instead, a thick stench of copper and ozone hit him so hard he gagged, stumbling forward into the room. Breathing felt like inhaling hot, wet dust mixed with raw metal, coating his tongue in a bitter, electric film that tasted of copper. Darkness didn't greet him, nor did the bright afternoon sun. Horrifying, wet walls pulsed in place of the familiar pale-green wallpaper he knew so well. Flesh, raw and glistening with a sickening yellow fluid, had erupted from the seams of the classroom, swallowing the plaster in a slow, chewing motion. Veins as thick as electrical cables throbbed against the baseboards, sparking with blue static that hissed like angry snakes. Desks were partially swallowed by a floor that yielded like a wet tongue under his shoes. He stumbled backward, his hand catching the doorframe for support, desperate to find some purchase in a world that had suddenly gone soft. Except the doorframe wasn't wood anymore; it felt like cold, calcified bone, slightly damp to the touch and vibrating with a low, mechanical hum. Sayori sat in the far corner of this organic nightmare, completely detached from the chaos around her. Clutching her knees to her chest, she rocked back and forth on the fleshy floor, her uniform stained with dark, oily fluid that dripped from the ceiling. Her hair was a messy, tangled nest, and her eyes stared at nothing, pupils blown so wide they swallowed the blue of her irises. Low hums of digital static buzzed around her head like invisible, angry flies. She didn't look up when he gasped her name, her body locked in that repetitive, mechanical rhythm. Watching her rock was like watching a broken doll, its internal gears grinding against each other until they stripped themselves bare. "Sayori?" his voice cracked, barely a whisper in the heavy, humid air of the room. "What is this? What did you do to our classroom?" Slowly, her head snapped toward him, the movement violent and unnatural. Vertebrae popped with a sharp, wet sound that made his stomach turn in instant regret. "Save them," she whispered, her voice layered with a metallic, vibrating pitch that rattled his teeth. "Go ahead. Try to save them, senpai." Behind her, the shadows of the room seemed to bend and warp, defying every law of perspective. Yuri and Natsuki were trapped in opposite corners of the room, looking like animals waiting for the slaughter. They were paralyzed by the sheer impossibility of their surroundings, their eyes glassy with shock and terror. Yuri had clawed at her own arms until thin red ribbons dripped down her pale skin, staining her purple sleeve. Her eyes darted erratically as she tried to comprehend the weeping meat walls that surrounded her. "It's not real," Yuri mumbled, her voice rising in a frantic, breathless pitch. "The words... the words are bleeding into the floor, and I can't read my own thoughts anymore." Natsuki was curled into a tight ball, her hands pressed hard against her ears to block out the noise. High-voltage sparks leaped from the fleshy walls near her head, singeing her pink hair with the smell of burning acrylic. She was weeping, her small frame shaking violently with every pulse of the room's digital heartbeat. Sayori watched them, her expression shifting from manic glee to a sudden, jarring sadness. Determined to be the bright, cheerful girl who brought everyone together, she tried to project a warm smile. Inhaling deeply, she forced her mouth into a bubbly, wide grin, trying to project her old self. "E-e-ehehe..." she started, her voice glittering with sharp digital distortion. "I'm... I'm re-re-ally s-sorry I'm late, guys!" Apologies sounded like a broken record player spinning at double speed, painful to the ears. Static hissed between her teeth, spitting tiny blue sparks onto her chin as she tried to maintain the lie. "I just... I had a l-little trouble... w-waking up today... because the morning didn't load properly." Her eyes welled with tears, but they didn't fall like normal tears. Instead, they pixelated on her cheeks, turning into tiny, glowing green blocks that vanished before hitting the floor. Panicking at the sight of her friends' terror, she waved her hand through the sticky, humid air. Glowing panes of translucent blue and green data erupted around her like a protective cage of light. "Don't look at me like that," Sayori whimpered, her fingers twitching over the floating interface. "I did this for us. We can be together forever now, without any of the bad thoughts." Desperate to keep them from running, Sayori began violently scrolling through their biological code. Her fingers flew across the digital screens, swiping with a frantic, aggressive speed that blurred her hands. Strings of hexadecimal numbers representing Yuri's nervous system flashed bright, warning red. Tapping Yuri's heart rate, she forced the code down to prevent her from passing out from hyperventilation. "See? I'm helping," Sayori giggled, though her voice vibrated with a terrifying sub-bass frequency. "I can make you calm. I can make you love me if I just change this one little variable in your mind." Next, she swiped over to Natsuki's data sheet, her eyes scanning the raw numbers. Raw code detailing nutritional values, bone density, and pain receptors hovered in front of her like a dissection. Sayori's fingers hovered over the pain variables, a dark, dangerous curiosity sparking in her mind. Cold, empty space had always filled her chest, a black hole of depression that swallowed every happy memory she tried to keep. But now, touching this interface, she felt something entirely different. Power. Deep, possessive power rushed through her veins like hot venom, temporarily numbing her chronic emotional emptiness. If she controlled their parameters, they could never leave her. They would never walk out of the club room, go home, and forget she existed. "You won't leave me," Sayori muttered, her eyes glaze-focused on the glowing lock icon on her primary screen. "Nobody is leaving this room ever again." With a sharp, downward swipe, she executed an administrative lock protocol, sealing their fate. *SYS_LOCK_0x000FF* flashed across the floating monitors in blinding gold letters. Metal fused with bone as the classroom door’s brass lock melted into the surrounding flesh, sealing the exit. Gone was the door, replaced by a digital barrier that defied physical law and logic. Yuri let out a choked scream, burying her face in her bloodied hands as the reality of their imprisonment set in. He lunged forward, desperate to grab Sayori’s shoulders and pull her away from the glowing panels. Feet sank into the floor as the meat tightened around his ankles like quicksand, trapping him in place. Static-infused tendrils rose from the floorboards, wrapping around his calves and delivering sharp, agonizing jolts of electrical current. Sayori didn't even look at him. Waving her hand casually, she erected a wall of transparent blue code barrier between them, humming with power. Every attempt to speak resulted in a dry cough, his throat seized by the toxic, digital atmosphere of the room. Yuri’s eyes grew wider, her pupils shaking as she stared at the floating lines of her own biological code. Numbers representing her blood pressure and adrenaline began to spike, turning from a calm green to a violent, blinking crimson. Clawing at her throat, she gasped for air as if the very concept of breathing had been deleted from her reality. Natsuki, however, snapped under the weight of the pressure. Terrified past the point of reason, she scrambled to her feet, her eyes locked on the sealed doorway. "Let me out!" Natsuki shrieked, her voice cracking with pure, unadulterated terror. "Let me out of here!" Sprinting across the room, her shoes slipping on the wet, pulsing tissue of the floor, she ran. Sayori watched her, her expression perfectly blank, her fingers poised over the keyboard. "You can't go, Natsuki," Sayori whispered, her voice layered with a dozen overlapping frequencies. But Natsuki wasn't listening to the monster her friend had become. Driven by a primal urge to survive, she threw herself toward the fused door. Natsuki reaches for the brass doorknob, only for her entire right forearm to pixelate into a swarm of screaming, red-text error messages that begin crawling up her shoulder. Natsuki screams but then is pushed away. Sayori then focuses on Monika who is staring at her room huddled crying and horrified. Then Senpai hears a thud coming from Yuri and Natsuki he looks and they are both on the floor. They were gone… Senpai cried but was now more then ever determined to save Monika.
