Chapter 10 of 10

The Architect's Punchline

767 words

Her pupils flared iridescent, flicking from the formless abyss of the cosmic arbiter to Tazcal, who hung mid-leap with claws inches from a Sentinel’s jugular. Then to Yaxkin, rigid with raised spear, teeth bared in an unmoving grimace. Beside him, the eagle-warrior hovered frozen, pinions locked wide beneath his raised buckler. She faced the arbiter again. Frost rimed her eyelashes, dragged down by an empty vacuum calling her toward total deletion. For an instant, the promise of quiet oblivion pulled at her heels, urging her to stop running. Then the image of Tazcal’s scarred snout, Yaxkin’s cynical snort, and the battered warrior's bloodied feathers snapped through her thoughts, stirring pure spite. *Surrender? Never.* A smirk cracked Xiloe's lips. She blew a lock of black hair out of her eyes. “You know,” she said, her voice snapping across the motionless stone, “I’ve been thinking.” The blank rift hung immobile, sending a frosty chill through her skull as it waited for her surrender. “This whole ‘sacrificing myself for the greater good’ setup?” Xiloe took two measured strides across the flagstones toward the towering silhouette. “Terrible writing. Utterly stale.” A feral grin flashed across her teeth. “A worn-out cliché. And honestly, Judge, your face is asking for knuckles.” She stepped beneath the towering spire of white light. Erasing currents dragged at her sleeves, seeking to peel her skin into static, but she grounded her boots into the stone. Her right arm whipped forward. Gravitational weight torn from the foundation wrapped around her knuckles like iron bands. The air screeched under sudden pressure, then detonated. [ARCHITECT ACHIEVEMENT: INFINITE SARCASM! UNLOCKED: GRAVITON PUNCH – 'Because sometimes, a good slap is all it takes.'] Xiloe drove the blow straight into the core of the blank void. No skull or gristle yielded, yet the metaphysical strike detonated across the void's center. The radiant halo stuttered. Shockwaves of disrupted resonance tore through the room, and the temporal stasis shattered with the dry snap of splintering ice. Tazcal’s snarl tore through his throat as his claws severed the Sentinel's neck in a shower of dark gore. Yaxkin swung toward her, reading her stance instantly. The cosmic blade in Xiloe’s left grip hummed against her palm. “Now!” Xiloe yelled, her command thundering off the limestone rafters. “Strike!” Tazcal bounded to her flank in a streak of black fur. His claws gripped the hilt beside her knuckles. Obsidian lightning surged from his jaguar soul, wrapping the edge in whistling static. Yaxkin drove his golden spearhead against the flat of the steel. Inquisitorial solar fire poured into the metal, fusing with the black lightning until the blade hummed at a glass-shattering pitch. “For My Lady!” Tazcal roared, his amber gaze fixed on the target. “For our path!” Yaxkin barked, a sharp smirk pulling at his scarred mouth. “And for that ridiculous punch!” Channeling the twin torrents through her own grip, Xiloe thrust the screaming edge straight into the shivering heart of the cosmic judge. Steel met the rift. Stone groaned beneath them as the formless judge cracked down the middle. In a vacuum of silent implosion, the frost-white silhouette collapsed into ash-colored mist, leaving only scorched air and the tang of ozone. The ceiling fractures knit back together, sealing the dark sky above Yax-Te. The Cenote Gates throughout the lower halls locked into steady alignment, their turquoise pool-light humming smooth and level. Xalyce's mangled husk twitched weakly on the flagstones. Xiloe nudged a lump of severed silk with her toe, curling her lip. “Disgusting. Shovel that filth out to fertilize some backwater ditch.” A faint *shloop* echoed, and the last traces of Xalyce winked out of existence, banished to some forgotten corner of a barren reality. Tazcal swayed on his paws, then dropped to both knees before her. He pressed his blood-streaked cheek directly into her palm, breathing rough and shallow against her fingers. “My Lady,” he rasped. “Always.” Yaxkin slid his back down a fractured column, leaning his spear aside with a ragged exhale. The eagle-warrior lowered his buckler to the pavers, bowing his plumed crest toward her. Xiloe blew out a long breath, survey-marking the gore across the dais and the shattered obsidian seat. She booted a chip of carved jade aside and dropped onto the throne's arm, swinging one leg over the stone. “Alright, Codex,” she said, rapping her knuckles against the obsidian. “World saved, cosmic creep punched out. What’s next?” A single holographic interface flickered into existence before her, speaking in her own sardonic voice. [Well, don’t get too comfortable, Architect. There are 42 other broken knights in neighboring dimensions. Want to crash a wedding?]
