Chapter 3 of 10

A Critic's Tears and the Writ of Heresy

Inspector Jalil, impeccably clad in robes of deep crimson silk, straightened his posture with a theatrical sniff. The scent of roasted lamb and simmering spice, thick and unapologetic, clung to the Platinum Promenade, defying the sterile breezes. He held aloft a faceted azure carbuncle-gem, the size of his thumb, its edges catching the afternoon light. “Behold!” he boomed, his voice thin but cutting, “The standard of purity, the essence of bodily advancement, the sustenance of Oraz’s elite!” He then dramatically pointed a manicured finger, tipped with a ring bearing the Guild of Synthesizers’ sigil, at Nasrin’s humble Copper Skillet. “And *that*,” he declared, his voice dripping with condescension, “is a biohazard! A blight upon the sacred integrity of this district!” Nasrin, who had been wiping down her counter with a slightly damp cloth, froze as dread tightened her throat. *Biohazard?* The word echoed in her mind, a phantom accusation from her past life as a disgraced potion-brewer. *They know! They know I’m selling illegal elixirs disguised as food! This is it! The Apothecary Guard will be here any second!* Her eyes darted wildly, searching for Kaveh, who was still on his knees, trembling, oblivious to the unfolding drama. She had to act fast. “It’s nothing!” Nasrin blurted out, her hands flying up in a frantic, placating gesture. “Absolutely nothing! Just… peasant slop! Worthless! No spiritual value whatsoever!” She forced a wide, desperate smile. “Look, it’s not even… magical! No drafts here! Just… stew! Made from… dirt-grown vegetables! And… meat! From… animals! Very, very ordinary animals!” Jalil’s eyebrow, thin and sculpted, arched in disdain. “Peasant slop? Ordinary animals?” He took a step closer, his gaze sweeping over the simmering pots with a look of profound revulsion. “You dare claim to peddle such… unsanctified refuse on the Platinum Promenade? Right next to the illustrious Pavilion of Pure Nourishment?” He gestured towards the gleaming, glass-sheathed building, its entrance guarded by two impassive, armored sentinels. “Precisely!” Nasrin chirped, nodding vigorously, a bead of sweat trickling down her temple despite the cool breeze. “Purely… mundane! Absolutely no refined benefits! Not even a single… *trace* of magical energy! Just… makes your tummy feel full! And maybe… a little bit gassy!” She winced internally. *That might be going too far.* Jalil scoffed, a sound like dried leaves skittering across pavement. “Such audacious claims of worthlessness, in an attempt to subvert the Guild’s regulations on compound distribution, are transparent, street vendor. However, for my inspection dossier, I shall, with great personal sacrifice, sample this ‘peasant trash.’ Prepare a bowl. And make it quick. I have a stomach to cleanse.” He produced a pristine parchment and a diamond-tipped stylus, ready to ink a damning indictment. Nasrin's ribs rattled under the violent pounding in her chest. He was going to taste it. He was going to taste the *delicious, soul-nourishing, meridian-clearing* chili stew and realize it was a potent elixir! She was going to be exiled to the Wastes! She grabbed a clay bowl, her hands shaking, and ladled out a generous portion of the deep crimson stew, its surface glossy with rendered fat and flecked with bright green herbs. The aroma, rich and earthy with a fiery undertone, made Kaveh, still recovering by the cart, inhale sharply. He looked up, brow drawn tight in sudden alarm. Jalil accepted the bowl with the tips of his fingers, as if handling something highly infectious. He brought it close, sniffing delicately. A muscle in his jaw twitched. “The audacity of such… crude aromas,” he murmured, then, with a sigh of resignation, dipped a silver spoon into the stew. He raised it to his lips, his expression one of stoic suffering, and took a small, hesitant bite. The instant the fiery liquid touched his tongue, Jalil's lids snapped back. A flush, like a rapidly spreading bruise, bloomed on his pale cheeks, then his entire face. His ears turned a furious scarlet. He began to sweat, beads of moisture erupting on his forehead and trickling down his neck. A violent tremor ran through his body. He gasped, a strangled, choked sound. “What… what in the name of the Prime Alchemist…?” he wheezed, his voice suddenly hoarse. He snatched the sapphire pellet he had been clutching, staring at it as if it had betrayed him. He opened his mouth, and with a horrifying retch, the perfectly compressed blue nutrient-prism, still intact, flew from his throat and clattered onto the cobblestones, shattering into a million glittering shards. His body seized. A low growl rumbled in his chest. His meridians, accustomed to the smooth, predictable flow of laboratory energy, violently convulsed as Nasrin’s honest, raw, spice-infused stew tore through them like a cleansing fire. Blockages, accumulated over decades of 'pure' prism consumption, exploded into glittering motes of light, clearing pathways he didn't even know existed. Jalil’s face, now a shade of furious crimson, dripped with sweat. He looked like he had been caught in a sudden, torrential downpour. He blinked, a strange, ecstatic agony contorting his features. His gaze, wild and desperate, locked onto the remaining stew in the bowl. Without another word, he plunged the spoon back in, this time taking a massive, overflowing gulp. His cheeks puffed out, his eyes squeezed shut in a mixture of pain and profound, unexpected pleasure. He coughed, a deep, rattling sound, then let out a moan that was entirely undignified. He shoveled another spoonful into his mouth, then another, his pristine robes stained with chili oil. [The Cauldron’s Will: Seasoning Mastery Achieved. Reward: Essence of Sunstone Chili. Ingredient added to inventory.] Nasrin stared, bewildered. He was supposed to be arresting her, not… publicly humiliating himself. Kaveh, now on his feet, watched with a mixture of horror and awe, a hand clamped over his mouth to stifle a laugh. The street thugs, still wearing their aprons and scrubbing pots, paused their chore, their jaws slack. Even the armored sentinels outside the Pavilion of Pure Nourishment seemed to subtly shift their weight, their rigid postures betraying a hint of curiosity. High above, in the opulent penthouse of the Pavilion, Director Arman watched the scene unfold through a brass spyglass. His usually placid face, refined by decades of strict dietary discipline and strategic alliances, contorted into a snarl. “That… barbarian!” he hissed, watching Jalil devour the stew with the grace of a famished street dog. “Sabotage is clearly insufficient. The *heresy* must be official.” He strode to a large, ornate desk carved from polished obsidian. With a flourish, he dipped a quill into a bottle of iridescent ink and signed a heavy parchment. The Guild’s formal seal, an interlocking set of transmutative runes, glowed faintly as he pressed it onto the document. The Writ of Heresy. Declaring Nasrin Qasemi’s food anathema to the metaphysical well-being of Oraz. Back on the Promenade, Jalil slammed the now-empty clay bowl onto the counter with a resounding *clack*. His breathing was ragged, his face still flushed, but his eyes shone with a manic, almost desperate hunger. He looked at Nasrin, his voice a raw, primal scream that echoed off the surrounding buildings. “Arrest this woman!” he bellowed, spittle flying from his lips. “Arrest her, I say, for withholding the second course!” Just as his words died in the air, the rhythmic tramp of heavy boots resonated through the plaza. A heavily armed squad of Apothecary Guards, their polished breastplates glinting, marched in perfect formation directly towards the Copper Skillet.
