Chapter 1 of 10

The Ghost, The Skewer, and The Spy

1.1k words

The scent of sizzling cumin and charred lamb fat hit the Platinum Promenade like a physical blow, a fragrant anomaly in the crisp, sterile air of Oraz. Nasrin Qasemi, hunched over her battered 'Copper Skillet' cart, squinted at the glowing, cerulean mass hovering inches from her freshly grilled Kebabi-ye Barg. It pulsated with a hunger that was alarmingly tangible for a non-corporeal entity. “Back, you phantom pest!” Nasrin hissed, brandishing a pair of tongs still slick with marinade. The ghost, a translucent blob with two vaguely eye-like indentations, tried again, a shimmering tendril reaching for the roasted meat. It was her prize dish, marinated overnight in fiery Urzhan peppers and spiced with a blend she’d resurrected from pre-synthesis archives. Each bite was a tiny, delicious rebellion. She slapped the tendril with the tongs. A faint, wailing sigh ghosted past her ear. “No, you don’t! You’ll scorch your phantasmal fingers, and then I’ll be blamed for… for phantom injury! The Apothecary Guard will have me then, for sure!” Her voice, normally a low murmur, rose to a frantic whisper. Every shadow on the pristine, quartz-paved street felt like a lurking officer, ready to pounce and declare her rich, life-giving food ‘heretical poison.’ Another tendril snaked out, faster this time, wrapping around the very tip of the iron rod. Nasrin pulled back, a desperate tug-of-war ensuing. The ghost let out a frustrated moan, growing brighter. She needed to add more spice, a kick to truly deter it, but her hand, trembling with the effort of fighting a literal ghost, slipped. The iron spike rotated, falling short of the swirling spice blend she'd aimed for. [Warning: Insufficient Seasoning Detected. Flavor Profile Suboptimal. Punishment Imminent.] A sharp prickle stung Nasrin’s wrist. She yelped, dropping the tongs. The Cauldron’s Will, the archaic bronze bracelet fused to her arm since her exile, delivered its usual mild, annoying static shock. But to Nasrin, it wasn't a culinary critique; it was a blaring siren. The Apothecary Guard. They knew! The 'Cauldron's Will' was merely a legal ledger, obviously, monitoring her every illicit move. They must have detected her un-registered, un-sanctioned spice usage! “They’re here!” she muttered, scrambling to shove the offending spit under a canvas tarp. The blue ghost, momentarily forgotten, drifted back, its hazy form wavering in confusion. Its wail now sounded less hungry, more perplexed. Just then, a crisp, baritone voice cut through the street's usual hum of synthesized tranquility. “Is this stall open for business, vendor?” Nasrin froze, her fingers still fumbling with the tarp. She slowly turned. Standing before her cart, directly across from the gleaming, stark-white facade of the Pavilion of Pure Nourishment, was a man who looked utterly out of place. He wore a long, charcoal trench coat that seemed to absorb the ambient light, and his dark, wavy hair framed a face sculpted with an almost dangerous elegance. His eyes, the color of polished obsidian, held a curious glint as he surveyed her humble setup. This was no ordinary synthesized-cube eater. Nasrin, paranoid and flustered, saw only a dangerously handsome stranger. “Business?” she stammered, trying to sound nonchalant. “What business? I’m just… admiring the architectural marvels of the Promenade! Polishing my… artisanal griddle.” She gestured vaguely at the sizzling skillet, which was clearly, actively cooking something. The aroma of garlic and ginger, though muted by her efforts to hide it, clung to the air. Kaveh’s lips twitched, a subtle movement that made her wonder if he was suppressing a smile. “Is that so? Then your ‘artisanal griddle’ smells remarkably like a Kebabi-ye Barg. One with Urzhan peppers, if my senses are not mistaken.” His gaze drifted to the edge of the tarp, where a faint wisp of lamb-scented steam escaped. Her cover was blown. Nasrin sighed, defeated. The guard would be here any second, thanks to her bracelet. “Fine,” she conceded, pulling the tarp fully back. “One Kebabi-ye Barg. For a connoisseur of… ‘architectural aromas.’” She impaled a fresh cut of lamb, adding a generous pinch of the Urzhan pepper blend this time. No more shocks for her. The Cauldron's Will, silent, seemed to approve. Kaveh took the skewer, his long fingers surprisingly delicate. He brought it to his lips, a slow, deliberate motion, and took a bite. The sound of sizzling fat and tender meat was almost sacrilegious in this silent district. As he chewed, his brows lifted fractionally. Then, to Nasrin’s astonishment, a faint, almost imperceptible shimmer began to emanate from him. It wasn't the glow of synthesized nutrients. It was a vibrant, golden pulse, his very essence vibrating with pure cultivation energy, swirling visibly around him like an invisible current. “Incredible,” Kaveh murmured, his voice deeper now, almost reverent. “The energy… it’s raw, untamed. Yet perfectly balanced.” He took another bite, the golden shimmer intensifying, his eyes closing for a moment as if savoring a forbidden pleasure. Nasrin stared, mouth agape. Was her food… *potent*? That was even worse! More reasons for the Guard to arrest her! Just then, the tell-tale clatter of polished boots echoed down the Promenade. A uniformed Apothecary Guard, his face stern and his mineral-imbued staff gleaming, rounded the corner. He scanned the street, his gaze falling directly on Nasrin’s illegal cart, then on Kaveh, who was still savoring the lamb. He took a menacing step forward. “You there! Vending without a permit is a direct violation of—!” The blue poltergeist, which had been idly hovering near the cart, suddenly solidified. Its translucent form pulsed violently, expanding into a terrifying, towering apparition with glowing red eyes. A guttural growl, impossibly deep, ripped through the air. The ghostly bouncer loomed over the Guard, its shadowy claws twitching. The Guard, mid-sentence, stumbled backward, his face draining of color. He let out a yelp that was far from professional and scrambled away, clutching his staff like a lifeline, disappearing around the corner in a panicked dash. Nasrin watched him flee, utterly bewildered. The ghost, now back to its docile, blobby state, nudged her elbow gently, as if asking for another portion. “You… you scared him off?” she whispered, half-terrified, half-relieved. “You… you’re my bodyguard?” Kaveh, having finished the meat, simply wiped his mouth with a pristine handkerchief, a faint, knowing smile playing on his lips. He slipped something into her hand—a pouch of gleaming, high-denomination Skylar coins—then turned, melting into the shadows of the adjacent alleyway. He pulled a small, faceted communication crystal from his pocket, its surface glowing faintly with an internal light. His voice, now devoid of its earlier warmth, was cold and sharp as he whispered into the device: “I am in; she suspects nothing, and I will steal her recipes by midnight.”
