Chapter 1 of 10
The Pilot Episode: A Symphony of Catastrophe
924 words
The wind howled a dramatic underscore as Tekla Järvinen leaned into the open hatch of the sleek, black aerodynamic beast hovering over Revanto’s most exclusive waterfront. Below, the opulent glass dome of the Vesikko-Aalto wedding reception shimmered with ill-fated grandeur. Hundreds of guests, countless flashbulbs, and one very inconvenient groom currently attempting to flee with a junior pastry chef.
“Benny, you’re sure the wind patterns will carry them exactly where we need?” Tekla’s voice, calm as a glacier, cut through the rotor’s roar into her headset. Her pristine white jumpsuit, a deliberate contrast to the chaos she commanded, caught the morning light.

“Cross-referenced with three meteorological models, Tekla. They’ll blanket the Vesikko-Aalto shame-fest like a fluffy, pink shroud,” Benny Holma’s voice, a familiar balm of tech-savvy confidence, crackled in her ear. “Live feeds are picking up your chopper. Every news channel in the city just switched from the Kestrel affair exposé to ‘Mystery Airborne Object’.”
Tekla permitted herself a small, victorious smirk. The Kestrel affair, her current client’s messy entanglement, was about to be relegated to yesterday’s news. The truly spectacular scandals always needed a bigger, prettier, more absurd scandal to eclipse them.
“Release,” she commanded, her gaze fixed on the unsuspecting wedding party below. At her signal, the bottom of the helicopter shuddered open, unleashing a deluge. Not bombs, not confetti, but millions of petals from the rare Arctic Rose, an intoxicatingly fragrant, vibrant fuchsia. They cascaded earthward, a shimmering, scented avalanche, directly onto the pristine white tent, the terrified string quartet, and the fleeing groom who now found himself ankle-deep in floral distraction.
Below, the live news anchors scrambled, their voices escalating into a frenzy of speculation. “What is this? An artistic protest? A bizarre marketing stunt? The entire Vesikko-Aalto wedding, engulfed in roses!”

“Nailed it, boss,” Benny chirped. “Lord Kestrel’s poll numbers just bounced like a hyperactive kookaburra. Your reputation, a solid gold halo.”
Tekla nodded, already scanning the city skyline, her mind racing ahead to the next obstacle. “Good. Now, what’s next on the docket, Benny? Anything juicy enough to keep ‘The Grand Fixer’ from languishing in rerun hell?”
There was a brief, uncharacteristic silence from Benny’s end. “Uh, Tekla. About ‘rerun hell’… I’ve got something. A summons. It’s… it’s House Valo.”
Tekla froze. Even the helicopter’s rhythmic thrum seemed to quiet. House Valo. The name hung in the air, thick with ancient money and modern disaster. The Valo family, perfumers to royalty for generations, now more famous for their spectacular implosions than their exquisite fragrances. No one took on House Valo unless they were truly desperate, or clinically insane.
“Valo?” Tekla repeated, a thrill of genuine anticipation, dark and exhilarating, sparking through her. “Benny, you know what House Valo means.”
“It means a series finale, Tekla! Not a regular episode! Their scandals are practically a genre unto themselves!” Benny’s voice was laced with a rare tremor of unease. “They just… they just had another ‘incident’.”
“Details, Holma. Make it dramatic,” Tekla said, already shrugging out of her harness, the rose petals still settling over the city like a perfumed snowfall.
“Stellan Valo. He had an… altercation with that journalist, Pia Hyvönen, at the Valo Estate. You know, the one who’s been hounding him about the ‘lost formula’?” Benny rushed through the explanation. “Apparently, it escalated. Badly. His state-of-the-art perfume laboratory, the one with the ancient botanical collection? It’s currently on fire.”
Tekla grinned slowly, predatory and deliberate. A fire. A priceless laboratory. Stellan Valo. This wasn’t just a new season. This was a blockbuster cinematic event.

Forty-five minutes later, the sleek black sedan Tekla had commandeered screeched to a halt outside the Valo Estate. It wasn't just sprawling; it was an architectural declaration, all sharp angles, polished concrete, and floor-to-ceiling glass, nestled on a cliff overlooking the Obsidian Fjord. Today, however, its minimalist grandeur was punctuated by the garish red and blue flashing lights of emergency vehicles. Columns of acrid smoke, smelling faintly of burnt amber and panic, curled from the eastern wing.
Firefighters, grim-faced, wrestled with hoses, dousing what remained of a pristine, glass-walled structure that had clearly once housed a magnificent laboratory. The air thrummed with the hiss of water, the shouts of emergency personnel, and the low, guttural roar of a family’s legacy going up in smoke.
And then she saw him. Stellan Valo. He stood apart from the pandemonium, a singular figure of dishevelled fury. His dark hair was mussed, a scorch mark smudged his immaculate tailored shirt, and his eyes, a startling shade of glacial grey, were fixed on the burning ruins of his family’s heart. He was taller than she’d expected, an imposing presence even amidst the devastation. He looked less like a corporate titan and more like a cornered wolf.
Their gazes met across the smoky expanse. His jaw worked, a muscle twitching. There was no recognition, only raw, unfiltered accusation in his eyes. He pointed a trembling finger at the devastation, then at her.
“You’re the fixer?” His voice was a low growl, strained but resonant, cutting through the din. “Fix this.”
Tekla felt the internal cameras zoom in. This was it. The direct confrontation. The turning point. She adjusted the cuff of her jumpsuit, a small, almost imperceptible movement, and flashed a brilliant, unwavering smile. A smile just for the viewership only she could see.
“Challenge accepted.”
