Chapter 5: Duel of Shadows and Steel

912 words

Sephiroth’s fingers tapped an idle rhythm against the ancient stone railing. Days had passed since his last 'amusement'. Lyra’s sharp mind offered fleeting distraction, a puzzle to observe, but the static air of the sect grew stale. He craved intensity, a crescendo of conflict and raw power. Something grander. Something disruptive. His gaze swept over the distant peaks, the whispering forests surrounding the sect's defenses. Power pulsed within the land, hidden veins of elemental energy. A challenge presented itself: not to draw power, but to *force* it, to transmute the very essence of the wilderness into a weapon against itself. Alchemical runes flared on his palms, invisible to the common eye. He plunged his will into the earth, into the dense spirit energy that nurtured the forest. Not subtle extraction, but a violent, deliberate manipulation. He sought to unravel the equilibrium, to twist the natural order until it screamed. Deep within the ancient woods, a tremor began. Small at first, a ripple through the root systems, then an aggressive surge. Spirit beasts, normally placid or territorial, felt a sudden, inexplicable rage. Their eyes glowed. Their primal instincts screamed danger, a violation of their domain. Packs of Crimson Fangs, their fur bristling like needles, burst from the tree line. Ground shook as Ironhide Boars, tusks honed to razors, charged forward. Above, Sky Serpents, scales shimmering emerald, descended with predatory screeches. A true tide of fury, unnatural in its coordination. Alarms blared across the sect. Disciples, previously training in placid courtyards, scrambled for weapons. Elders, their faces grim, barked orders. This was no ordinary raid. The sheer numbers, the coordinated ferocity, spoke of an orchestrated attack. But by whom? Sephiroth watched from his vantage point, a faint, cruel smile playing on his lips. The scent of fear and ozone filled the air. Perfect. The chaos was a canvas. Blade cultivators met the onslaught first, steel clashing against claw and tusk. Spiritual energy erupted in dazzling bursts, severing limbs, scorching fur. But for every beast felled, two more surged forward, driven by an unnatural, persistent aggression. The ground quickly became slick with blood. A Crimson Fang, its flank torn open by a disciple’s sword, collapsed. Its life force, still potent, began to dissipate. Sephiroth extended a hand. A dark, almost invisible thread of energy shot out, wrapping around the beast’s essence. It wasn't just refinement; it was consumption. He pulled the raw spiritual energy, the lingering vitality, into himself. His alchemical arts converted it instantly, efficiently. A subtle warmth spread through his meridians. Another beast, an Ironhide Boar, fell, its massive head caved in by an elder's crushing strike. Again, the dark thread reached out. Sephiroth absorbed. His cultivation, which had stagnated slightly in the predictable environment, found new fuel. Disciples, overwhelmed, started to fall. Their bodies, less resilient than the beasts, offered a different kind of prize. Their life force, their cultivation base, their very spiritual essence — all became grist for his mill. A young male disciple, his chest pierced by a Sky Serpent's venomous fangs, choked on his own blood. His eyes glazed over. As his life ebbed, Sephiroth’s will latched on. The boy’s essence, pure if undeveloped, flowed into him. A faint hum resonated within Sephiroth’s core. A female cultivator, her robes shredded, screamed as a pack of Crimson Fangs tore at her. Her resistance faded. Sephiroth observed, waited until the last breath, then harvested. He felt no remorse, only a cold satisfaction at the efficiency of his consumption. The battle raged. The sect, though powerful, was unprepared for such a relentless, coordinated assault. Their numbers dwindled. The spirit beasts, too, were taking heavy losses. This was the balance Sephiroth sought. He wasn’t here to side with anyone. He was here to profit. When a particularly strong wave of spirit beasts threatened to overwhelm the remaining disciples, Sephiroth acted. Not with direct intervention, but with subtle manipulation. A sudden gust of wind, precisely aimed, deflected a charging beast. An unseen tremor caused another to stumble. Conversely, when the sect began to push back too effectively, an invisible force would subtly weaken a disciple's strike, or distract an elder at a crucial moment. He wanted a prolonged, devastating conflict, not a swift victory for either side. He wanted a harvest. His eyes scanned the battlefield, searching for a specific target. Elder Jia. The pompous old man who had looked down on him, who had dared to question his presence. Jia was currently locked in a fierce battle with a colossal Earth Ripper Bear, its hide like granite. Jia, a peak Qi Condensation cultivator, was formidable. His fiery strikes incinerated lesser beasts. But the Earth Ripper Bear was relentless, its brute strength overwhelming. Sephiroth decided. The balance needed to tip, and Jia was the perfect catalyst. A surge of alchemical energy gathered at Sephiroth’s fingertips. He wasn’t aiming for the bear. He aimed for Jia’s spiritual reserves. An invisible, insidious alchemical poison, specifically designed to accelerate spiritual fatigue, seeped into the elder’s meridians. Jia grunted, a sudden wave of exhaustion washing over him. His normally vibrant spiritual energy flickered. His stance faltered. The Earth Ripper Bear roared, sensing weakness, and slammed its massive paw down. Jia barely dodged, a searing pain lancing through his side. He glared, bewildered, at his own trembling hands. What was happening? His energy was draining too fast. Sephiroth descended, a silent shadow amidst the carnage. Jia, distracted by the bear, didn't notice him until it was too late.
