Chapter 8 of 10
The Living Floor

He stared at it, then at Zala, who watched him with an unreadable expression, her dark eyes reflecting the residual glow from the bugs. The request felt less like an invitation and more like a declaration of war, a new and stranger battleground than the junk-strewn market.
“So,” Tevos drawled, letting a hint of his usual flippancy mask the sudden knot in his gut. “After trying to drag me back to your guild in chains, you want to… party up?”
Zala didn't flinch. “You heard the message. The tower isn't what we thought. And your swarm just ate through a squad of skilled assassins that would have wiped the floor with me alone. We’re both in deep. A mutual alliance is pragmatic.” Her gaze hardened slightly. “And you heard the part about my guild considering me a traitor, didn’t you?”
He remembered the cold fury in Praetor Venn’s voice when he’d first escaped her. The Crimson Hand had also labeled her. Zala was adrift, just like him. He also remembered the unexpected rush of her fighting beside him, the way her blade sang through the air, covering his flanks. The way she'd moved when he’d thrown up that makeshift chitin shield, an almost imperceptible lean into the protection.
“Pragmatic, huh?” Tevos mused, tapping his chin. “Sounds less like a party and more like a corporate merger.” He looked back at the floating box. “Fine. But if you try to stick me with the tab, there’ll be hell to pay.”
[Party Request from Zala Accepted.]
The blue box dissolved. A new, smaller icon appeared in the top corner of his vision, next to his own profile: Zala’s stylized guild crest, now marked with a faint, connecting line. It felt… odd. Like a brand.
“Where to?” Zala asked, already moving towards the ruined entrance of the Gilded Market, her movements economical and precise. She wasn't waiting for him, but her pace suggested she expected him to follow.
“The top. Where else?” Tevos replied, shrugging. “We need answers. And according to my old man, they’re at the very summit.” He gestured with a rusty wrench. “But maybe we should aim for somewhere a little less… populated for our next move. Guilds have long memories.”
Their ascent through the lower spires was a blur of efficiency. Zala’s knowledge of safe routes and monster weaknesses was invaluable, her blade a silver streak through the few stragglers they encountered. Tevos, in turn, used his diggers to clear paths, salvage overlooked components, and even create temporary diversions, keeping their progress swift and surprisingly quiet. Their banter became less antagonistic, morphing into a rhythm of quick observations and dry remarks, a shared language forged in the crucible of frantic escape.
They reached the Sixty-Second Spire, a realm rumored to be desolate and treacherous, where the tower's very structure began to warp into something alien. The access tunnel opened not into a cavern or a labyrinth of ruins, but onto a vast, undulating floor that shimmered with an internal, sickly green light. It stretched as far as the eye could see, a deck forged of bio-mechanical alloy.
“What in the… scrap heap is this?” Tevos breathed, stepping forward cautiously. The alloyed ground pulsed beneath his boot, a low, resonant thrum vibrating through the soles.
Zala’s hand was already on her blade. “I’ve never seen anything like it. Climber logs mention ‘The Jade Reach,’ but these descriptions are centuries old. It was thought to be inert.”
The floor wasn’t inert. As Tevos took another step, the alloyed sheet rippled, and razor-thin wire-stalks, like polished steel grass, shot up from the ground, lashing at his ankles. He recoiled, barely avoiding a whip of lead and chrome that would have shorn off his foot. The air grew thick with a faint, almost imperceptible hum.
“It’s sentient?” Tevos exclaimed, scrambling back as more wire-stalks erupted. His swarm, usually eager, huddled around his feet, their tiny red eyes darting nervously.
Zala moved with astonishing speed, her blade a blur of silver. She carved through the attacking coils, each strike accompanied by a high-pitched, almost mechanical shriek from the deck. But for every coil she severed, two more sprang forth, faster and sharper. The green light intensified, bathing the chamber in an emerald glow that felt less like illumination and more like radiation.
“It’s trying to absorb us!” Zala yelled, parrying a particularly thick stalk that coiled and struck like an iron viper. “Its composition is unique—contains rare alloys, power signatures I don’t recognize.”
Tevos’s mind raced. Absorb. Unique composition. Rare alloys. He took a deep breath, focusing, pushing past the instinct to panic. His gaze swept over the churning deck, and the familiar blue text box appeared.
[Verdant Expanse (Hostile Biome). Primal Need: Assimilation of Complex Minerals. Energy Signature: High-frequency Data Conduit.]
A jolt of understanding shot through Tevos. “It’s hungry!” he shouted to Zala, dodging another whip of cable. “Not for flesh, not exactly. For specific ore!”
Zala, deflecting a barrage of coils with a sweep of her blade, glanced at him, her mouth pulled taut with skepticism. “You think we can feed it?”
“It’s worth a shot!” Tevos yelled back, already activating his swarm. “Give me something!”
Zala hesitated for a fraction of a second, then, with a powerful downward strike, she severed a glowing segment from one of the thicker coils. It pulsed with an alien light, a composite of crystalline structures and polished metal. She kicked it towards him. “Here! Pure energite-alloy!”
[Energite-Alloy Fragment. Primal Need: To be Integrated. Energy Signature: Data Segment – High Purity.]
Bingo. Tevos’s swarm swarmed over the fragment, their chitinous bodies grinding against the alien metal. Instead of devouring it, they began to process it, breaking it down into a fine, sparkling dust that they then carefully deposited onto the agitated surface of the Verdant Expanse. As the first dust settled, the vines in that immediate vicinity faltered, their lashing movements slowing. The green light around them dimmed slightly.
“It’s working!” Zala cried, pushing back the remaining coils with renewed vigor. “Keep going!”
Methodically, Tevos directed his swarm. Zala would cut off a piece of the alloy; his swarm would grind it into a rich powder, which they then fed back to the plates. It was a bizarre, almost ritualistic exchange. With each offering, the hostility lessened, the stalks retracting, the pulsating green light softening to a gentle, steady sheen.
Eventually, the entire area around them grew docile, the plated deck smooth and quiescent. Tevos knelt, placing his hand on the cool, placid metal. He could feel a faint vibration, not of hostility, but of something else. A flow. He focused his perception, extending his awareness through his swarm, letting them 'taste' the underlying charge.
[Verdant Expanse. State: Pacified. Function: High-Capacity Data Conduit. Receiving/Transmitting: System Core Directives. Query: Status of Anomaly Registry. Response: Active, Awaiting Purge Protocol.]
Tevos froze. Data conduit. System Core Directives. Anomaly Registry. It wasn't just synthetic biology; it was a giant nerve fiber of the entire Obolith, routing information directly to the machine mind itself. And it was actively waiting for a 'Purge Protocol' related to an 'Anomaly Registry'. An anomaly like him, perhaps? Or Zala? Or the information they now carried?
He remembered Kailos’s final, frantic message: *“The System doesn’t grant power, Tevos. It signs a contract on your soul. Find the Administrator. Stop the harvest.”*
Administrator. Kailos hadn't just warned him about the reaping, he’d warned him about a *who*. Someone, or something, was running the whole operation. And this floor was a direct line to it.
A chilling thought formed in Tevos's mind, born of desperation and the sheer audacity that had gotten him this far. He still had the corrupted data from Kailos's core, the jumbled bits of code that had broken the mentor's message. He could feed *that* to the floor. He could hack it. He could send a virus through the Obolith’s own nervous network.
“Zala,” Tevos said, his voice low, a strange mix of fear and exhilaration. “This floor isn't just a monster. It’s a giant data cable. And I think I can piggyback on it.”
Her brow furrowed. “Piggyback? What are you talking about?”
“Kailos gave me something else, before… before. A data-crystal, full of broken information. I think it’s a virus. And this floor is the perfect place to spread it.” Tevos stood, looking out at the shimmering field. “If this is how the architecture talks to itself, I’m going to make it choke.”
He concentrated, recalling the corrupted data, the broken code, the desperate warnings his mentor had hidden within the crystal. He pushed the swarm to its limits, not processing the data for consumption, but for transmission. He fed the jumbled, noxious information directly into the placid sheets of the Jade Reach, like injecting poison into an immense bio-mechanical beast.
For a moment, nothing happened. Then, the green light of the floor pulsed violently, contracting and expanding like a distressed lung. A sudden, piercing shriek reverberated through the air, a sound less mechanical and more like pure agony.
And then, a terrifying image exploded in Tevos’s mind. Not blue text, not a hologram, but a direct, raw imprint. A colossal being, formless yet defined, a shimmering vortex of pure light and layered glyphs, hovering at the pinnacle of the Obolith. Its presence was vast, ancient, and utterly indifferent. It was watching. It was *orchestrating*.
Then, as quickly as it came, the vision vanished, leaving Tevos gasping, his hands instinctively clutching his head.
[Anomaly Detected. Purge Protocol Initiated.]
The words blared directly into his mind, echoing with deafening finality. The entire jade deck began to violently shake, the green light flashing erratically, a guttural roar tearing through the air from the depths beneath them. Cables, thicker than any before, ripped through the plating, rising like furious brass serpents, their tips glowing with an ominous red light. The ground buckled beneath their feet, sending them stumbling.
