Chapter 8: The Hotel Begins To Hunt
969 words
The moment Daniel’s recording ended, nobody moved. The small camera screen went black, but the sound of his final words remained inside their minds. He knows my name. Those four words felt heavier than anything else they had discovered that night because they revealed something they had not wanted to accept. Whatever was inside Blackthorn Hotel was not random. It was not simply a strange force hiding in an abandoned building. It was aware of them. It had watched them enter. It had listened to their conversations. It had learned their names, their voices, and the things that made them trust each other.
Mia stared at the camera in Alex’s hand, hoping that somehow the recording had been misunderstood. She wanted to believe Daniel had simply gotten scared and imagined something that was not there. She wanted to believe that he was hiding somewhere inside the hotel, waiting for them to find him so they could all laugh about how frightened they had become. But the look on everyone’s faces told her that they all knew the truth.
Daniel was gone.
And Blackthorn Hotel had taken him.
Alex was the first to move. He refused to accept that they should simply leave Daniel behind, no matter how dangerous the hotel had become. They had entered together, and he believed they had to leave together. He grabbed the flashlight and started walking toward Room 13, but Mia immediately stopped him.
“Alex, think about what happened,” she said quietly. “Daniel went in there because the hotel wanted him to.”
Alex looked at her.
“And we’re just going to leave him?”
Nobody answered.
Because nobody wanted to say the possibility out loud.
Maybe Daniel was already gone.
They decided to search the surrounding area first. They moved through the hallways carefully, staying close together and refusing to separate. The confidence they had when they first entered Blackthorn Hotel was completely gone. Earlier, they had walked through the building like explorers discovering a forgotten place. Now they moved like people trapped inside something they did not understand.
The hotel seemed different after Daniel disappeared.
The walls felt closer.
The shadows seemed darker.
Even the sound of their own footsteps felt unfamiliar.
They searched every room nearby, calling Daniel’s name repeatedly. Their voices echoed through the empty halls, but the hotel gave no answer. The silence almost felt intentional, like something inside the building was enjoying watching them search.
After nearly an hour, they returned to the living room, exhausted and frustrated. They placed Daniel’s camera on the table and tried to think logically about what they should do next.
Noah looked through the old documents again, searching for anything they might have missed. He turned through pages of reports, missing person records, and notes from previous visitors. The more he read, the worse he felt.
Because Daniel was not the first.
The same pattern had happened many times before.
Someone entered Blackthorn Hotel.
Someone heard a familiar voice.
Someone followed it.
And then they disappeared.
Lily found another document hidden between the old pages. It was not part of the official hotel records. It looked like a handwritten note from someone who had investigated the hotel years ago.
She carefully read the words.
The person who wrote it described hearing voices throughout the building. They explained that the voices never sounded threatening. They always sounded like someone who needed help. Someone innocent. Someone familiar.
The note ended with one warning.
“The moment you answer the voice, the hotel learns you.”
Mia looked up.
“What does that mean?”
Lily slowly shook her head.
“I don’t know.”
But they all understood one thing.
The hotel was not just copying voices.
It was studying people.
Every conversation.
Every reaction.
Every fear.
As the night continued, the group became more desperate to find a way out. They decided to return to the entrance and check if the doors were still blocked. Maybe Daniel’s disappearance had nothing to do with escaping. Maybe they could leave and find help.
But when they reached the main entrance, they discovered something impossible.
The doors were gone.
Not locked.
Not broken.
Gone.
Where the large entrance doors had once stood was now a solid wall covered in old wallpaper.
Everyone stared at it in disbelief.
Noah stepped forward and touched the wall.
“This wasn’t here before.”
Nobody needed him to explain.
They all knew.
The hotel was changing.
It was not allowing them to leave.
Panic slowly began spreading through the group. Emma tried to keep everyone calm, reminding them that fear would only make things worse, but even she struggled to hide how frightened she was. They had entered Blackthorn Hotel believing the stories were exaggerated. They thought they would find old secrets and leave with an interesting experience.
Now they were trapped inside a building that seemed alive.
Alex looked around at his remaining friends.
There were six of them now.
A number that felt strangely wrong.
They had entered as seven.
The hotel had already taken one.
And everyone wondered the same thing.
Who would be next?
That night, they decided they could not stay in one place anymore. If the hotel wanted to separate them, they would not give it the opportunity. They gathered supplies, flashlights, and every piece of information they had found so far. Their only chance was to understand the hotel before it understood them completely.
But as they prepared to leave the room, Mia noticed something strange.
A message had appeared on the wall.
Nobody had seen it being written.
Nobody had heard anything.
It was simply there.
Written in dark, uneven letters.
“ONE FOUND THE ROOM.”
Everyone stared.
Then another line slowly appeared underneath.
“SIX REMAIN.”
The room became silent.
Because the hotel was counting.
It knew exactly how many people were left.
