Chapter 2: Born With Old Eyes

873 words

What was wrong with him? Why wasn't he crying? Instead of the wail of a newborn greeting the world, there was only a baby with a look of strange confusion on his face. Doctor, is my baby okay? The man in the white coat waved his hands, his body suffused with a faint, greenish light. A spectral overlay of vines and leaves flickered across his features as he peered down at the infant in his arms. I'm perplexed. There's nothing physically wrong with the baby. While his new parents fretted, David was still processing his own reincarnation. He looked at the faces around him. The man holding him must be the doctor, given he was the one who’d just pulled him from his mother's womb. Speaking of his mother, she lay on the bed, her gaze fixed on him with the unique, desperate worry of a parent who has just been told something is wrong with their child. Her golden hair was splayed across the pillows, dark with the sweat of labor. She looks human… at least Administrator put me in a world similar to my old one. She was beautiful, too. If she were transported to his original world, her looks alone would have landed her a contract with a Korean idol agency. His father stood beside her, a hand on her shoulder. His stubbled jaw and princely uniform gave him an air of immense dignity, as if he’d just returned from a war, his chest heavy with medals. Both of his parents looked as though they’d been lifted straight from a medieval painting. Are they seriously cosplaying during my birth? And where am I? This room doesn't look like a hospital. [This is now your house.] A home birth? He was supposed to have been reincarnated into the richest household in the world. Couldn't they afford proper medical care? He didn't see any ultrasound machines or fetal monitoring systems… [They are from the richest family in the world but there are no machines present in this room.] Then he saw it. The doctor holding him began to glow, bathed in an ethereal green light. [I have detected the doctor's use of examining magic.] Magic?! There's magic in this world? In hindsight, David shouldn't have been surprised. Administrator knew he loved cartoons and fantasy, so of course he'd be sent to a magical world. [Would you like to learn more about this magic?] [Magic theory acquired.] — Earth and Light element — This magic allows the user to peer through a target's body and observe it for any abnormality or disease. The words materialized in his vision, just like the ‘system’ interfaces from the shows he used to watch. If I'm like one of those MCs who can copy every ability I see, then this reincarnation might be better than I thought. After all, magic offered conveniences that even his advanced former world couldn't achieve. Humans in his past life needed a forklift to move a heavy boulder; here, a mage could likely do it with a simple spell. A single water spell could have solved droughts, even famine, back home. This is good! I can live a much more comfortable life. Since he was a rich kid now, he could have butlers and mages at his disposal. No school, no working for a living. He could just inherit everything he needed from the wealthiest family in the world. [There is a high possibility that your parents will hire a private tutor for you to learn administrative duties.] David ignored HelperBot-9000. Why would he need to learn anything when his personal AI assistant could do all the work for him? The only problem was the lack of his favorite cartoons and TV shows. Speaking of which, where was the TV? And the air conditioning? As he scanned the room, a daunting realization began to dawn. Instead of a well-lit space with cool, circulating air, David saw only the flickering light of candles and oil lamps mounted on the walls. Slowly, the pieces clicked into place. The home birth, the less-than-sanitary conditions, his parents’ regal attire, and the complete absence of a single light bulb. The horrible truth of his situation finally struck him. He’d been reincarnated into a world stuck in medieval times. He might have been born into the richest family on the planet, but even kings and queens of this era lived like peasants compared to the average person in the modern world. But that wasn't even the worst part. Where are the magic lights? If this world had magic, why wasn't anyone using it for basic comforts? Why weren't mages summoning fire, water, and air to make life easier? And what was that smell? [That smell comes from feces.] Feces… wait a minute… what about toilets? Don't tell me… [There is a high possibility that this world doesn't have any plumbing.] NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!! David could do nothing but scream, a raw, piercing wail of frustration at the world Administrator had thrown him into. There was nothing comfortable about this life at all. At the sound of the baby finally crying, his parents and the doctor broke into smiles of pure relief. He seemed to be a very healthy baby boy.
