Chapter 10 of 10

Apex Vanguard

The simulation materialized in a shower of fractured light. Cold, synthetic drizzle fell upon the shattered ferrocrete of the Sky-Spire Citadel, the virtual championship arena towering sixty floors above an endless sea of molten pixel slag. Opposite them, the rival unit advanced like predatory insects. Five vanguard heavyweights, their skins wrapped in reflective obsidian plating, weapons already humming with ionized plasma. [OMNI-CORE: FATAL PROTOCOL ACTIVE. SURRENDER IS SYSTEM-TERMINATION.] "Formation Zero!" Zaven barked over the tactical link. His simulacrum mirrored his broad shoulders, but the twin broadswords strapped to his back crackled with unstable red voltage. "No retreats. No second thoughts. Jessa, stay on my hip." "Don't give me orders, Vance," she shot back, voice raspy through the voice-modulator. Her twin blades—short, jagged steel salvaged from underground code archetypes—spun in her grip. "Just don't get in my way when the bodies drop." The enemy point-man crossed the courtyard in half a breath, swinging an arc-hammer that cratered the concrete where Jessa stood an instant prior. She flipped over the shockwave, boots skidding against the slick ground, and drove both daggers into the brute’s neck joints. Liquid gold code spewed from the severed spinal link. Zaven was already beside her. He caught an incoming kinetic spear on his gauntlet, splintering the incoming bolt, then spun through the gap to bisect the spearman from hip to collarbone. Side by side, their movements were no longer two separate fighters executing a practiced drill; they were a singular machine operating on shared breath. When she ducked, he swung over her skull. When he parried wide, her blades slipped through the opening to harvest the kill. Two down. Three to go. High above the battlefield, cast across the skybox clouds, the betting odds twitched. Toris’s syndicate money was flooding the system, banking on the sudden erasure of the Iron Sentinels. "The payload is cooking," Jessa grunted, dodging a barrage of micro-missiles. The heat of the explosions scorched her construct's flesh, sending a dull, sickening throb into her physical temples back in the rig. "I need ten seconds at the central node to force the injection." "I'll buy you twenty," Zaven answered. He hurled himself into the teeth of the remaining three hostiles, blades flashing in an unbroken whirlwind of violence. He took a plasma bolt straight through his shoulder armor, the damage meter on his HUD flashing a warning yellow, yet he yielded not an inch of dirt. Jessa sprinted toward the glowing blue relay spire at the center of the citadel platform. Her fingers dug into the virtual console. Lines of crude, jagged gutter-rigged code cascaded over her vision—the ugly, illicit subroutines she had pieced together in rat-infested alleyways. [INTRUSION DETECTED: UNREGISTERED ROUTINE RUNNING.] [INJECTION PROGRESS: 68%... 74%...] "Look out!" Zaven roared. The enemy captain had bypassed him, activating an overdrive booster that propelled his bulky frame through the air like an artillery shell. His twin plasma lances were aimed directly at Jessa's exposed back. If the attack connected, the terminal shock would trigger the Omni-Core's memory-scrambler before her virus could deploy. She had a microsecond to choose. Dodge, preserve her wireframe, and watch the upload abort. Or finish the job. "Take the trophy, Vance," Jessa whispered. She refused to evade. Instead, she twisted inward, catching the double impact straight through her chest. The agony hit her physical brain like molten lead, blinding and violent, making her scream inside her helmet as the lances pinned her against the spire. [CRITICAL DAMAGE. CHASSIS INTEGRITY 0%.] With her dying simulated hand, she slammed her steel dagger into the console's terminal port. [INJECTION: 100%.] Her frame dissolved into a blinding cloud of golden dust. "Jessa!" Zaven's shout tore through the comms. The enemy commander was still recovering from the lunge, weapons lodged in the disintegrating console. Zaven closed the distance in a single, frenzied stride. His broadsword ignited with every scrap of energy left in his power cells, descending like an executioner’s axe. The blade cleaved through the enemy commander's skull, through his chest, through the floor itself, severing the rival in two. [VICTORY: IRON SENTINELS.] For one suspended heartbeat, the virtual world stood silent. Then the second detonation hit. It was no blast of fire, but of light. Jessa's scrap-virus breached the arena walls, overrode the Omni-Core's firewalls, and hooked into the global entertainment feed. High above the stadium, the mammoth holographic billboards flickered, wiped clean of sponsor ads. In their place, giant projection windows opened over the entire city of Xentria. Audio recordings boomed through the open air, amplified to deafening clarity: Toris's calm, sneering voice discussing illegal betting margins, his orders to tamper with pod neural-safeties, and the ledger detailing how he engineered the debts of the Varlon family to seize control of the franchise. "What is this?!" Toris shouted across the broadcast booth. "Cut the feed! Cut the damned satellites!" He slammed his hands against the master board, but the scrapper code had welded the relays open. On the luxury balcony overlooking the stadium floor, heavy metallic boots thudded against marble. Six corporate security enforcers in matte-gray battle gear stepped forward, their weapons drawn and leveled at the manager's chest. "Manager Toris," the lead enforcer stated as an omni-lens cast a floating red warrant. "Under the authority of the High Commerce Tribunal, you are detained for match-fixing, systemic extortion, and unauthorized neural tampering. Your assets are seized immediately." "You fools! I built this team! I made them gods!" Toris screamed, thrashing as cold steel restraints snapped around his wrists and dragged him away from the podium. Inside the sensory pit, the pod doors hissed open with a rush of stale steam. Jessa dragged herself out of the gel-bed, coughing violently. Her vision swam with lingering static, her lungs burning from the tight wraps bound across her torso. She tumbled over the lip of the rig, her knees hitting the hard metal grating of the stage floor. Her hands shook so hard she failed to unbuckle the heavy composite helmet. Heavy, running footfalls clattered across the stage floor. "Don't move," a voice commanded—rough, frayed, and unmistakably his. Zaven dropped to his knees in front of her. His hands, usually so steady with a blade, trembled as he reached for the locking pins on her headgear. With a sharp twist, he yanked the helmet away and tossed it aside. It clattered off the edge of the stage. Jessa looked up, her damp dark hair clinging to her pale cheeks, sweat cutting tracks through the grime on her face. Her male disguise was entirely ruined; the compression bandaging had partially unravelled during her frantic convulsions in the pod, showing the soft curve of her throat and the unmistakably feminine lines of her collarbone beneath the shredded undershirt. Three billion people were watching through the overhead hovering drones. The arena cameras zoomed in, projecting her true face across every tower in the city. Zaven stared at her. The fury was gone. The confusion that had haunted him for weeks had dissolved into something raw, fierce, and utterly unhinged. "You crazy maniac," he breathed, his voice thick with unspent terror. "We won," she managed, a crooked, exhausted smirk touching her cracked lips. "The debt is gone. I bought my way out." "You aren't going anywhere," Zaven said. He didn't wait for her to reply. He cupped the back of her neck with a calloused palm, pulled her against his chest, and slammed his mouth onto hers. The stadium went silent for a fraction of a second before erupting into a deafening roar that shook the girders of the dome. Millions of flashes illuminated the darkened stage as every camera tracked the kiss. Jessa stiffened, instinct urging her to shove him away, to protect herself, to vanish into the shadows where she belonged. Then she felt his hand gripping her waist, anchoring her against the world, holding her as though she were the only real thing left in the entire neon wasteland. Jessa closed her eyes, grabbed the front of his combat jersey, and kissed him back.
