Chapter 3 of 10
The Boardroom Charade
918 words
The opulent silence of the Ghalvan penthouse, still thick with the scent of recycled air and old money, had barely settled when Rydan found himself ushered into a chauffeured aero-limo. Its dark, reflective exterior promised anonymity, a stark contrast to the transparent scrutiny he knew awaited him. He had spent the remaining hours running simulations of the family balance sheets through his cranial tap, a gray-market mod spliced in during his street broker days. The web of subsidiaries and conditional clauses proved dense, yet thoroughly decipherable.
The vehicle deposited him before the obsidian needle housing the firm's upper suites. Its spire sliced the yellow smog of Zelrova, an ostentatious spear of glass and titanium. Security escorts sneered at his borrowed, poorly tailored jacket before herding him toward the high-speed lift.
He pushed open the heavy, soundproofed door to the primary boardroom, his entry a deliberate spectacle of clumsy unease. The hush of conversation died. Twenty pairs of eyes, sharp and calculating, turned to him. The chamber favored pure intimidation: an immense slab of mirror-black ferro-carbon served as the table, lined with custom leather seats. Volumetric displays hovered overhead, blinking out live stock tickers and liquidity pools.
Tyros Ghalvan occupied the head of the table, his silver hair immaculate, his expression a mask of cold indifference. Beside him, Jorlan, clad in a perfectly tailored synth-silk suit, offered a patronizing smile. His gaze swept over Rydan’s rumpled form, a silent invitation for the room to join in his amusement. Rydan shuffled, feigning a sudden fascination with the intricate patterns of the carpet, his hands nervously clutched before him.
“Ah, Rydan. Just in time,” Tyros’s voice, a low rumble, cut through the tension. “Take a seat. We have… formalities.” He gestured to an empty chair at the far end of the table, furthest from the power nexus.
Rydan navigated the maze of chairs, bumping into one, causing a faint clatter that echoed in the quiet room. A pair of senior directors smirked over their water glasses. Jorlan’s smirk widened. “Clumsy, aren’t we, brother? Perhaps the high-society air is too thin for your… delicate constitution.” He chuckled, a sound echoed by a few sycophants down the table.
Rydan offered a weak, apologetic shrug, his eyes darting around the room like a cornered animal. Behind the dull stare, he pinged the room's direct data ports, cataloging the vulnerabilities he had flagged in the regional servers overnight. A live deployment under open scrutiny.
“As you are aware,” Tyros continued, his focus shifting back to the volumetric projections, “the alliance with Vesperi Holdings opens critical inroads into hyper-computation. To protect asset transfer and stabilize our equity partners, structural realignments are required.”
He paused, his eyes finally landing on Rydan with an almost imperceptible glint of satisfaction. “Rydan, by lineage, you hold dormant voting equity within our syndicate. Given your lack of literacy in high finance, however, standard prudence requires you surrender that authority. Jorlan will take full proxy control, maintaining a single voice across the transition.”
Jorlan preened, a self-satisfied smirk playing on his lips. “A sound safeguard, Father. We cannot leave company stability in crude hands.” He shot Rydan a triumphant look, daring him to object.
A thin glass slate slid across the table, stopping inches from Rydan's knuckles. The screen glowed with an emergency transfer agreement, dense with punitive clauses. “Affix your thumbprint, Rydan. Standard authorization.” Tyros’s tone sounded bored, treating the step as scrap paperwork.
Rydan lifted the slate with twitching fingers. He dropped the stylus against the glass twice, pretending his grip lacked fine motor control.
He hunched over the glass surface, shielding the display from view with his shoulders while he jabbed clumsily at the authorization banner. Behind the slack jaw, his optic link sparked into the slate's local transceiver. He traced the Ghalvan mainframe root links embedded in the transfer document, reading every line of encrypted registry code.
A slight pulse from his temple fired a ghost string through the slate's input bus. It was not a breach, merely a reroute. On the surface, the document stripped his kinship claim and handed the proxy over to Jorlan. But the phantom modifier reclassified the underlying stock into spousal-contingent equity, hardwiring its permanent custody to Zarys Vesperi the second their marriage registry processed with the municipality. The security architecture, built to block perimeter intrusion, welcomed the update as a routine family transfer.
He dragged the stylus across the glass, watching the verification bar flash emerald. He slid the slate back down the ferro-carbon, dipping his chin in an awkward bob. “Done. It took my mark.”
Tyros nodded, a ghost of a smile touching his lips. He believed he had just disarmed his inconvenient son. Jorlan clapped Rydan on the shoulder, a condescending gesture. “Excellent, brother. You might be good for something after all. Now, if you’ll excuse us, we have real business to attend to.”
The directors turned back to their private panels, already ignoring him. Rydan pushed back his chair, only for Jorlan to clear his throat.
“Father,” Jorlan called out, resting both palms flat on the table, “an addendum. To mark this alliance and introduce our new family member alongside his bride, I am hosting an engagement gala. The Grand Rotunda at the Azure Spire. Every primary ledger-holder in the sector will attend.” His gaze snapped onto Rydan, sharp and mocking. “Zelrova deserves an early look at our reclaimed bloodline and the reclusive Vesperi heir.” He wanted them under theater lights, exposed to every vulture with a media channel.
