Chapter 1 of 10

The Live-Broadcast Proposal

996 words

The scent of simmering belladonna hung thick in the air, a heavy syrup that traditionally steadied Tevari’s nerves. Not today. Today, the heat from the bubbling vials of cerulean-tinted ‘Phylactic Elixir’ felt like a physical pressure, mirroring the thousand Lumen-screens suspended above the Oskharan Institute of Chymistry’s Grand Arena. Her fingers, historically steady as bedrock, trembled ever so slightly as she fed another sprig of lumina-moss into the heated crucible. “Focus, Tevari,” she muttered, her voice a reedy whisper lost in the arena’s low hum. The Sovereign’s Cup was her solitary path to a government-funded greenhouse, a sanctuary of peace away from the public’s invasive gaze. She could almost taste the quiet, the cool soil, the blessed solitude. A sudden, blinding flash from the main Lumen-screen above the central podium made her flinch. The amphitheater, normally a wash of gentle alchemical hisses and murmurs, erupted into a roar. Tevari spun, her pulse hammering against her ribs, spilling a precious drop of her elixir onto the gleaming obsidian workstation. There, bathed in the harsh, celebratory glow of a thousand augmented spotlights, stood Rhovand. Her rival. Her nemesis. He was clad in a ceremonial vest of midnight viridian, the crest of House Vaeril emblazoned across his chest, catching the light like frozen starlight. His typically severe features were contorted into an approximation of joyous sincerity, his smile wide and utterly artificial. His gaze, however, was fixed on her, sharp and piercing as a crucible shard. And then, he dropped. To one knee. A velvet box, the color of crushed amethysts, materialized in his outstretched hand. A ring, a single, impossibly bright star-sapphire, winked from its plush interior. “Tevari Veridian,” Rhovand’s voice boomed, amplified by the arena’s chym-acoustics, “my dearest, most infuriatingly talented rival. Will you do me the immense honor of becoming my partner, my equal, my wife? Will you accept this proposal and join me in this sacred tournament, the Sovereign’s Cup, as my betrothed?” The roar intensified. The Lumen-screens, moments ago displaying the arcane complexities of her own potion’s molecular structure, now flashed with Rhovand’s face, then hers, then split-screens of cheering crowds. A dozen chym-drones whirred past, their optical lenses zoomed in, capturing every microscopic tremor of her shock. Tevari’s mind seized. The words, the spectacle, the sudden, unprovoked assault on her carefully constructed privacy, crashed down on her like an unexpected avalanche. Her throat closed. Her hands went clammy. Rhovand’s head tilted ever so slightly, his fake smile tightening at the corners. His voice, now a low, dangerous murmur audible only to her amidst the celebratory din, cut through her paralysis. “Refuse,” he hissed, his eyes glinting with a cold, desperate fury, “and the Chymistry Board revokes *both* our greenhouse licenses. Permanently. Your secluded haven, gone. Mine, too.” The blood drained from Tevari’s face. Her future, her quiet life, her life’s ambition, held hostage by this infuriating man and his absurd public charade. Her shyness, historically a shield, became a cage, locking her into place. Her tongue felt thick, immovable. She couldn’t form the words to refuse, to rage, to demand an explanation. The glare of a hundred million watching eyes burned into her. She moved then, a stiff, almost robotic movement. Her hand, trembling still, reached for his. Her fingers brushed the velvet box, a prickle of cold needlepoint raking her skin at the contact. A detached part of her brain noted the smoothness of the star-sapphire, the meticulous cut. She forced her lips into a ghastly, stretched-out imitation of a smile. “Yes,” Tevari managed, her voice emerging as a brittle, almost toneless whisper. “Yes, Rhovand. I will.” The arena erupted anew. Chym-drones spiraled in frantic celebration. Rhovand slipped the ring onto her finger, his touch fleeting and impersonal, his fake smile never wavering. He pulled her up, into a stiff, almost awkward embrace, his lips brushing her ear. “Good,” he murmured, the word devoid of warmth. “Now, look ecstatic.” Minutes later, a dazed Tevari found herself backstage, the roar of the crowd a distant, muffled hum. Rhovand stood beside her, his arm draped possessively, yet stiffly, around her waist. Across from them, the Cup’s Registrar, a stout woman named Eldra with a topknot of woven silver hair, clutched a thick, vellum-bound engagement pact. Eldra tapped a stylus against the pact’s surface. A faint, golden light pulsed. “There,” she declared, her voice crisp. “The Sovereign’s Cup Engagement Pact, sealed and registered. The temporal ward is now active.” Tevari stared at the parchment. A shimmering, iridescent sigil, like a ripple in still water, glowed faintly at the bottom of the page, directly beneath their hastily scribbled signatures. Her stomach clenched. “Temporal ward?” she asked, the words raspy. Eldra nodded, gathering her documents. “Standard procedure for all Cup entrants who register as betrothed. Ensures commitment, you see. If the pact isn’t finalized with your vows in precisely fourteen days,” she paused, adjusting her spectacles, “the ward will trigger a memory erasure. A complete blanking of the last five years.” She offered them a pleasant, unconcerned smile. “All memories associated with your alchemical careers, your rivalry, your burgeoning… affection. Gone.” Five years. The exact duration of their bitter, intertwined careers. The exact duration of their public, venomous rivalry that had pushed them both to the pinnacle of republic chymistry. Gone. Erased. Tevari choked on dry air. Rhovand’s grip on her waist tightened, a sudden, involuntary spasm of fear. Just as the full, horrifying weight of Eldra’s casual pronouncement settled upon them, the backstage Lumen-screen, designated for administrative notices, flickered. The stylized state crest dissolved, replaced by a breaking news banner, flashing in urgent crimson. A live broadcast, straight from the Institute’s main gate. The nation's darling, the famously fragile Lisseth, Rhovand’s manipulative ex-girlfriend, stood poised at the entrance, a delicate hand pressed to her chest, her emerald gaze glistening with an innocent, victimized sadness. The headline screamed across the screen, stark and unmistakable: *”Oskhara’s Sweetheart Returns: Lisseth Adair back at the Institute, Citing Mysterious Alchemical Ailment.”*
