Chapter 38: His Possession

917 words

Frigid air seemed to cling to Iris's skin, a stark contrast to the boiling rage in her gut. She stared at the tiny lens, barely visible above her bookshelf, a silent, invasive eye watching her for months. "Unbelievable," Alistair's voice rumbled, low and dangerous beside her. His fingers brushed the hidden camera, a possessive anger radiating from him. He pulled back, his jaw tight. Someone had been here, in her sanctuary. Watching. Footsteps echoed from the hallway, approaching her office door. Both Iris and Alistair froze. A familiar figure stepped into the doorway, a calm smile on their face. "Iris, Alistair. Everything alright in here? I heard voices." Mentor Elias stood, hands clasped behind his back, his expression benign. He was the one who had guided her, offered advice, been a pillar of support at Petal & Root. A sickening twist churned in Iris's stomach. It couldn't be him. But Alistair's eyes, sharp as obsidian shards, cut through Elias's facade. "Everything is far from alright, Elias." His voice was a steel trap, snapping shut. Elias's smile faltered, just a fraction. "Alistair, what are you implying?" "Implying?" Alistair took a step forward, placing himself subtly between Iris and the older man. "We found your little spy cam, Elias. Neatly tucked away above the classics." Elias's gaze darted to the bookshelf, a flicker of something ugly crossing his features before he regained composure. "That's absurd. I have no idea what you're talking about." "Really?" Alistair’s tone dripped with ice. "Perhaps you'd like to explain the manipulated purity scores. The phantom expenses. The 'accidents' in production. All designed to destabilize Petal & Root, to destroy Iris's legacy." Iris felt a chill. The carefully constructed web of lies and sabotage, now laid bare, pointed directly at her trusted mentor. Elias's pleasant mask shattered. His eyes narrowed, the warmth replaced by a cold, calculating malice. "A legacy built on stolen foundations, perhaps? Your father was always too quick to claim credit, Iris. And you, you're just like him." "Leave my father out of this!" Iris snapped, her voice trembling with fury. Mentor Elias scoffed, a bitter sound. "He took what was rightfully mine. Petal & Root was *my* vision. He just had the money to make it happen. You're just a pretty face, a puppet." His gaze lingered on Alistair with open contempt. "And you, Alistair. Still playing the protector, are we? You couldn't even protect your own family. What makes you think you can protect her?" Alistair’s body tensed, every muscle coiling. A low growl vibrated in his chest. His hand shot out, grabbing Iris's arm, pulling her back firmly against his side. His grip was possessive, almost bruising, but a strange sense of security washed over her. "Don't you dare speak to her like that," Alistair snarled, his eyes blazing. "And don't you ever, *ever* mention my family again." Elias laughed, a harsh, humorless sound. "Oh, a nerve struck. Good. You both deserve to lose everything. Just like I did. This company, it's a curse. And I'm just expediting its demise." His eyes, now completely devoid of warmth, scanned the room, almost maniacally. He seemed to be looking for something, anything to use. "Get out, Elias," Alistair commanded, his voice shaking with restrained power. His arm tightened around Iris, a clear message: she was his to protect. Elias took a step closer, his face contorted with rage. "I'm not going anywhere. Not until I've made sure you both understand the true cost of your arrogance." He lunged suddenly, not at them, but at the heavy antique globe resting on a pedestal near the door. His intention was clear: to smash it, to cause chaos, to perhaps throw something. "No!" Iris gasped, instinctively trying to pull away, but Alistair held her fast. He didn't let go, didn't even waver. Elias knocked the heavy globe. It wobbled precariously, then began to tip. At the same time, his arm swept across a display shelf filled with heavy crystal awards. One of the awards, a weighty glass sculpture of a blooming flower, slid off the edge. It hurtled towards them, directly above Iris's head. Alistair reacted without thought. His arm shot around Iris's waist, yanking her flush against his chest. He spun, shielding her with his own body, his back now exposed. The crystal flower smashed against his shoulder, a sharp, sickening crack. A grunt of pain escaped his lips, but his grip on Iris remained iron-tight. His body shielded hers completely. Her face was pressed into his firm chest, the scent of his cologne and something raw, primal, filling her senses. The world outside, the furious Elias, the shattered crystal, faded into a blur. All she felt was the hard plane of his chest, the rapid thump of his heart against her ear. He held her so fiercely, so completely. A rush of safety, potent and undeniable, flooded her. This wasn't about vengeance anymore. This was about *her*. His concern for her was not just genuine, it was a ferocious, overwhelming force. She realized, with a jolt that shook her to her core, that he would truly burn the world down to keep her safe.
