Chapter 5 of 10
The Mid-Point Re-Calculation

The flickering bioluminescent glow of the laboratory’s data interface reflected in Chaliya’s visor, each line of analysis a direct assault on her carefully constructed reality. Krit, sensing the shift in atmospheric pressure, chirped softly from his perch on a nutrient dispenser, his six eyes fixed on the display. The results from the sap analysis were absolute. Kamon’s unique bio-signature, confirmed across three separate spectral analyses and two independent genomic comparisons, screamed from the screen. Not just a trace, but a high concentration of the specific growth accelerants and cell-density enhancers that only Kamon’s lab, as a sub-contractor for the Flora Showcase, had access to. This stood as deliberate design, not random failure.
“The vine… it was intentional,” Chaliya murmured, her voice flat, devoid of its usual tactical precision. Her internal monologue, usually a buzzing hive of probabilistic calculations, had gone silent. The ‘shadow faction’ she’d spent years cataloging, the elaborate network of assassins she’d meticulously mapped across the Conservatory’s grounds, the labyrinthine conspiracy theories — all of them evaporated like morning dew under a sun-glider’s beam.
Tawan, still flexing his injured leg, watched her, his expression a complicated mix of concern and something else she couldn’t quite categorize. “Random? Chaliya, that thing tried to impale us. It targeted you.”
“No,” Chaliya corrected, a new, terrifying hypothesis forming. Her visor, usually a lens for paranoia, was now a window to an even stranger truth. “It targeted my research. My work. My *existence*. The collateral damage would have been a bonus.” She paused under the crushing realization of a decade of misinterpretations. “Kamon.”
Tawan’s jaw tightened, a low, rumbling sound emanating from his throat. “I know.” He stepped closer, his shadow falling over her, not menacing, but protective. “I should have known she’d escalate beyond petty Lumen-cast slander.”
Chaliya turned, looking up at him, her gaze scanning his face for deception, for an ulterior motive. Nothing. Only the quiet, unyielding warmth that had, until this moment, been the biggest anomaly in her worldview. The coffee, the constant offers of assistance, the absurd gifts, the willingness to brave her booby-trapped lab – it wasn’t an elaborate infiltration. It proved far from a truce with an assassin. It was… genuine. The realization hit her with the force of a bio-bomb blast, but this one didn’t cause her to deploy blast shields. It caused a different kind of internal cataclysm.
“My tactical alliance,” Chaliya began, the words tasting foreign on her tongue. “My… *monitoring* of your intent. My miscalculation was total.”
Tawan’s lips curved into a soft, almost vulnerable smile. He reached out, his hand gently cupping her cheek, his thumb brushing over the thin, cool ceramic of her visor. “It was a date, Chaliya. The whole time.”
Her processors rebooted. A new probability matrix unfolded. One where affection proved not a weakness to be exploited but a strength to be safeguarded. One where Tawan existed not as a threat to be neutralized but… a partner. A fiercely devoted, maddeningly patient, profoundly *real* partner. The racing pulse she’d attributed to neurotoxins at the Grand Conservatory Tea Gardens now had a name. A very human, very dangerous name: reciprocation.
“I… see,” Chaliya managed, her voice a barely audible whisper. Her hand, almost unconsciously, reached up, her fingers tentatively brushing against his wrist. The contact sparked a sensation that bypassed all logic, all calculation. It was warm. It was safe. It was terrifyingly new.
Tawan leaned down, his breath a soft caress against her ear. “Is that an acceptance of genuine affection, Botanist?”
Chaliya tilted her head slightly, her gaze locking with his. The world, for the first time in her memory, didn’t feel like a combat zone. It felt like… this. This quiet, intense bubble of understanding. Her tactical brain, having recalibrated, now had a new primary objective. Protecting *this*. This fragile, beautiful, utterly illogical connection.
“It is,” Chaliya stated, the word firm, resolute. “And the previous engagement for mutual benefit… has been upgraded.” She paused, a rare, almost imperceptible smile touching her lips. “To maximum priority. With extreme prejudice against any hostile variables.”
Tawan chuckled, a deep, rich sound that vibrated through her. He leaned in further, his lips just brushing against hers, a whisper of warmth. “Good. Because my threat assessment for Kamon just went from ‘nuisance’ to ‘biohazard requiring immediate, surgical removal’.”
Just as their lips were about to meet, a harsh, insistent chime ripped through the lab. Chaliya’s datapad, then Tawan’s, then the main laboratory display, all flashed red with a critical Lumen-cast notification. Krit shrieked, startled, fluttering to a higher beam.
Chaliya snatched her datapad, her eyes scanning the incoming data. It was a viral post, trending across all channels. A live-feed, already re-shared millions of times.
On the screen, Kamon sat in a pristine white medical bay, a single, artfully placed bandage wrapped around her forehead. Her eyes, glistening with manufactured tears, were fixed on the camera. “I… I just wanted to help my friend,” she sobbed, her voice cracking with practiced vulnerability. “I heard about Chaliya’s… *unstable* experiments. How she’s pushing boundaries too far, ignoring safety protocols. I went to check on Tawan, to make sure he remained safe from her perilous trials, and…” She gestured vaguely at her bandaged head. “Her new bio-engineered vine. It just… lashed out. So violent. So unpredictable. I don’t know what she’s doing in there, but it’s not safe. For anyone.”
The comments section beneath the video scrolled by in a blur of condemnation. “*Unstable Botanist endangers public!*” “*Chaliya’s reckless work needs to be shut down!*” “*Poor Kamon, always trying to do good!*” The entire city, fueled by Kamon’s carefully crafted victimhood, was turning against Chaliya. Her reputation, her funding, her entire career, was under kinetic assault.
Another chime, sharper this time. A private message, flagged ‘Urgent: Dean’s Office’. Chaliya opened it, her gaze hardening.
`To Dr. Chaliya, Research Lead, Crimson Blossom Project. Due to recent public safety concerns and allegations of irresponsible bio-engineering practices, effective immediately, all funding for the Crimson Blossom Project is suspended. You have 48 hours to either surrender all proprietary sun-seed specimens for Conservatory review and potential reallocation, or provide irrefutable, public-facing proof that Ms. Kamon’s claims are entirely fabricated.`
