Chapter 10 of 10

Mission Accomplished

One massive, gauntleted hand closed around her upper arm, hauling her unceremoniously to her feet. Kamon shrieked, a raw, undignified sound that tore through the stunned silence. Her eyes, red-rimmed and venomous, fixed on Chaliya. “This isn’t over, you… you plant witch!” Kamon spat, her voice cracking. “I’ll get you! I’ll ruin everything you’ve built!” Chaliya merely blinked, her expression unreadable. She’d processed the threat, filed it under ‘low-priority, easily mitigated,’ and shifted her attention to the scattered debris of the broken hydro-spanner. Tawan kept his arm draped firmly around her waist, leaning in close. “She’s not going to ruin anything, my love. Her credit streams are already frozen. Her university accounts are in lockdown. I had my family’s legal team on standby.” The guards began to drag Kamon towards the grand mahogany doors. Her struggles grew weaker, replaced by desperate, gasping pleas aimed at the horrified faces in the crowd. No one moved to help her. The elite attendees, quick to rally around a perceived victim earlier, now recoiled, their mouths twisted in revulsion. The holographic projection of Kamon’s perfectly healthy innards, still shimmering above the dance floor, was a stark, irrefutable condemnation. The laughter, once roaring, had settled into a low, buzzing murmur of judgment. Dr. Panya stepped forward, her severe features softening slightly as she met Chaliya’s gaze. “A truly… illuminating evening, wouldn’t you agree, Botanist Chaliya?” She allowed herself a small, almost imperceptible smirk. “I believe the data gathered tonight will prove quite compelling for the medical journals.” Dean Vimala approached, her previous astonishment replaced by a look of grim satisfaction. “Ms. Kamin’s actions were an affront to academic integrity and the very spirit of the Conservatory.” Her gaze swept over the now-empty space where Kamon had been. “Such transgressions will not be tolerated. Her Lumen-cast account, I’m informed, has already been permanently scrubbed. A small consolation, perhaps, but a necessary one.” Later, in the sterile quiet of her personal laboratory, Chaliya sat at her console. The air tasted clean, the low drone of filtration pumps registering as benign background noise rather than acoustic camouflage for infiltrators. Krit, perched on a stack of reclaimed data-slates, happily chewed on a strip of what appeared to be Kamon’s confiscated fake bandages, occasionally spitting out a bit of waxy adhesive with a soft ‘hic.’ The little sun-glider’s antennae twitched contentedly, its six legs rhythmically tapping a noiseless cadence against the metal. It was a victory trophy, a tangible piece of the antagonist’s elaborate charade reduced to a mere chew toy. A secure courier drone, its iridescent shell pulsing with a sapphire glow, settled onto the delivery pad. Chaliya acknowledged the delivery with a practiced tap, and a sealed datapad slid forward. The Dean’s official decree. She opened it, her eyes scanning the precise, legalistic script. Her funding—doubled. A permanent, private arboretum for her sun-seed experiments, equipped with advanced atmospheric controls and a dedicated security detail. Absolute academic victory. The wording was unequivocal, leaving no room for misinterpretation. The ‘Shadow Consortium’ had been effectively neutralized, not by counter-conspiracy, but by simple, overwhelming proof and the unwavering support of a bio-engineer who saw only her. The lab door hissed open, and Tawan stepped inside. For the first time since Chaliya had known him, he looked genuinely nervous. His usual confident stride was slightly hesitant, his warm smile replaced by a tentative curve of his lips. He wore a crisp, dark tunic, a stark contrast to Chaliya’s practical lab coat. In his hand, he held a sleek, cylindrical object – a military-grade tactical smoke grenade, its heavy casing reflecting the soft lab lights. Chaliya’s analytical gaze immediately locked onto it. The matte polymer cylinder, the polished composite rim, the subtle brass gleam of the pull-ring. A device designed for rapid concealment, for creating diversions in hostile environments. Her heart, however, did not race with a calculated threat assessment. Instead, it fluttered with an unfamiliar, intensely sweet anticipation. Her tactical algorithms, typically running at full speed, paused to process an entirely foreign frequency. Tawan walked towards her, his gaze darting across her features as if testing unmapped terrain. He reached her, his hand extending the grenade. “Chaliya,” he began, his voice a low murmur, “we’ve faced infiltrators, sabotage attempts, public humiliation, and even a rogue bio-vine.” He paused, a wry smile touching his lips. “You outmaneuvered every single one of them. You protected your work, and you… you protected me.” He offered the grenade. Chaliya took it, her fingers brushing his. The metal was cool against her palm. She clinically inspected it, her thumb finding the textured surface of the pin. Her analytical routines, typically a torrent of probabilities and evasive maneuvers, stalled completely. She knew, with an absolute certainty that transcended data, what this meant. She pulled the pin. With a soft *thwip*, the casing split, and instead of a plume of concealing smoke, a brilliant, flawless diamond ring popped out, nestled on a velvet cushion. It caught the light, refracting it into a hundred tiny rainbows across the lab. The stone shimmered with an inner fire, a perfectly cut symbol of permanence. Chaliya gasped, a small, involuntary sound of pure astonishment. Her mind, momentarily overwhelmed, struggled to process. A 100 percent probability of lifelong happiness. The calculation was immediate, undeniable, and utterly without malice or deception. It was the only outcome. Her pupils dilated, unclenching from defensive triage to settle on his face with rare calm. Tawan’s smile returned, broad and genuine, relief washing over his features. “Chaliya. My brilliant, beautifully paranoid botanist. Will you do me the honor of making me your partner… for life?” He didn’t kneel. He simply stood there, open and vulnerable, offering his entire world. Chaliya reached for him, her hand cupping his cheek, her thumb tracing the line of his jaw. The sun-seed, nestled in its primary growth chamber across the lab, pulsed gently, its fully bloomed, magnificent petals unfurling a soft, golden light that enveloped them both. She leaned in, her lips meeting his in a sweet, triumphant kiss. The amber glow of the sun-seed washed over them, marking the end of Kamon's scheming and the collapse of the phantom cabals Chaliya had constructed. As their lips met, a small, scuttling sound came from the floor. Krit, nimble and soundless, had scurried off with the empty plush cylinder, darting under a hydroponics bench to gnaw the hinge.
