Chapter 5 of 10
The Upward Wipe
833 words
The fissure on the obsidian egg deepened, not with a crack, but with a wet *shhhnnk*—the sound of reality unzipping. A blinding white light erupted from within, not radiating outwards, but *eating* the darkness. The air around the sphere disintegrated first, pixels tearing apart, then the ground where it was embedded. It wasn't an explosion; it was a deletion. The grey, featureless geometry of the basement began to *bleed* white, breaking down into shimmering static that whispered of non-existence.
“*Run!*” Ghavir roared, snatching Chibek—still a titanium shield—from the floor. He didn’t wait for Naliri, though she was already moving, her radiant aura flaring as she blasted a path through the dissolving debris. The white static erased the space behind them, rolling forward without a sound. The air grew thin, like breathing in a corrupted data stream.
[ERROR: CELL PURGE INITIATED. UNEXPECTED DELETION EVENT. AVOID INTEGRITY COLLAPSE.]
“What in the Shards is happening?” Naliri yelled, her voice echoing strangely as the walls around them flickered, translucent, then vanished. The Ziggurat’s foundations were simply ceasing to be. They were running through a void where only their immediate surroundings offered any purchase, a desperate sprint up a staircase that was unraveling into pure light behind them.
Chibek, still a shield, vibrated violently in Ghavir's grip. “This isn’t a monster, master! It’s… it’s an engine wipe!” The homunculus’s voice was a high-pitched whimper. “It’s eating the game! Like… like a clean-up patch gone rogue!”
Ghavir didn’t need the explanation. He *knew*. The pieces snapped together in his mind with the brutal finality of a critical system error. Ozarrak hadn’t sent him to retrieve an artifact. He had sent him to *activate* one. The tyrant hadn't been exploiting the decaying script; he was actively orchestrating its final, catastrophic failure. This wasn't a trap for Ghavir; it was a launch sequence for Ozarrak himself. The basement wasn’t restricted because it was dangerous; it was restricted because it was the launchpad.
Ozarrak desired not merely power within the Shards of Qesh, but *escape* from them. He coveted the ultimate sequence break: ascension beyond the game’s confines. The realm purge wasn’t meant to punish the world; it was a forced evolution, a brutal sweep designed to shed the limitations of the decaying code. And Ozarrak wanted to be the last, most powerful entity left to witness—and profit from—the collapse, perhaps to even *ride* it into whatever lay beyond the game engine.
His goal shifted again, violently, fundamentally. Assassinating Ozarrak was no longer enough. He had to out-glitch a cosmic horror actively devouring the game engine. He had to steal Ozarrak’s escape vector. He had to not just survive the wipe, but *hijack* it.
“He wanted this!” Ghavir gasped, pushing Naliri ahead of him as a support pillar vaporized into nothingness beside them. “Ozarrak *orchestrated* this! This isn’t a punishment, it’s his *ascension!*”
Naliri stumbled, looking back over her shoulder at the consuming white void. “Ascension? He would destroy the entire realm?”
“He doesn’t care about the realm, Saintess! He cares about himself!” Ghavir shoved her through a flickering doorway that threatened to vanish. They were on the verge of the next tier of the Ziggurat, a level less affected by the immediate deletion. The air here was still stable, the stone solid. For a moment, they were safe, the roaring static a distant hum from below.
[WARNING: LOYALTY PROTOCOL VIOLATED. IMMEDIATE CORRECTION REQUIRED.]
[ERROR: ATTEMPTED INSURRECTION DETECTED. FORCED RECALIBRATION INITIATED.]
A searing pain tore through Ghavir’s chest. The loyalty curse, dormant since the mausoleum, flared with an intensity that made his vision swim. It wasn't merely constriction this time; it was a clawing, dragging sensation. His feet lifted from the ground, his body pulled taut, limbs flailing uncontrollably.
“Ghavir!” Naliri cried, reaching for him, her holy light instinctively attempting to push back against the invisible force. It was useless.
Chibek shrieked, morphing back into his diminutive, bulbous form, clutching Ghavir’s leg with surprising strength, attempting to anchor him. “Master, no! The curse is pulling you!”
[FAST TRAVEL INITIATED. DESTINATION: OZARRAK’S INNER SANCTUM.]
The text flashed, burning itself into Ghavir’s retina even as his entire being was stretched, compressed, and ripped from the space he occupied. He saw Naliri reach for him, Chibek’s desperate, shrinking form, then the world collapsed into a blur of broken colors and fractured data. The deletion below, his allies left behind, his body forcibly warped across the vast, tiered expanse of the Crimson Ziggurat.
He reappeared with a disorienting lurch, his knees buckling, the lingering pain of the curse still a hot brand on his chest. The air was thick with the scent of ozone and burnt sulfur, vibrating with the low, foul drone of advanced, forbidden enchantments. Before him, seated on a throne of jagged obsidian, sat Ozarrak, cold eyes fixed on Ghavir’s bent frame. The inner sanctum was a vast, cavernous space hummed with dark, foreign energy, and Ghavir was utterly alone, face-to-face with the man who had just triggered the destruction of their world.
