Chapter 5 of 10
The Midpoint Breach

The klaxons weren't just a distant wail; they were a physical pressure, vibrating through the ferrocrete floor, rattling Jaskya’s teeth. Ten minutes. Ten minutes until the Apex, her meticulously designed death trap, collapsed on them all. Tarkis’s roar of rage, a sound that had once promised retribution for his enemies, now felt like the earth itself tearing apart around her.
“The perimeter!” Tarkis thundered, his voice raw, turning from the projection with a violence that made the air crackle. Veins corded across his neck as he glared toward the lift shaft. “The lower access points. They’ve breached the outer wall.”
Jaskya stumbled back, the digital echo of her past self’s manic laughter still ringing in her ears. Her design. Her trap. A concrete coffin for the man who stood before her, the man who had only hours ago discovered Orik was his son and claimed him with savage possessiveness. She was supposed to let him die, to watch him pay. But the thought now tasted like ash.
“No,” she whispered, her voice lost beneath the blare. “We have to stop it.”
Tarkis didn’t hear her. He was already barking orders into his comm-link, his movements sharp, predatory. “Seal Sector Gamma! Deploy drones to the Zylos Gate! I want every available guard on the lower levels, *now*!”
A sharp report, distinct from the alarms, vibrated up from below. Then another. Gunfire. Heavy caliber. The Apex was under attack, and her failsafe was counting down the seconds to finish the job for the invaders.
Orik, who had been huddled by her leg, looked up, his small face pale. “Mama? What’s that sound?”
Jaskya scooped him up, clutching him tight. Tarkis spun, his gaze snagging on Orik. He shielded the boy behind his thigh with an instinctive snap of his arm. “Take him to the Panic Core,” he commanded Jaskya, his voice like grinding stone. “It’s impenetrable.”
“The failsafe…” Jaskya began, fighting the tremor in her throat. “It’s linked to the breach. The system thinks it’s a hostile takeover. It’s designed to bury you all.”
Tarkis paused, his comm-link still held to his ear, his attention split between the incoming assault and her frantic revelation. A flicker of something — disbelief, then dawning horror — crossed his face before he slammed the device back to his belt.
“*You* designed this?” he snarled, stepping closer, his shadow falling over them. “Then you’ll shut it down.”
“I don’t know how!” she cried. “My past self encrypted everything! I’m still trying to decipher the master keys.”
Another volley of heavy fire rattled the floor, closer this time. The overhead lights flickered, a cascade of sparks raining down from a conduit. Tarkis gripped her forearm, hauling her and Orik toward the reinforced hall leading to the Panic Core.
“Then we move faster,” he growled, scanning the passageway ahead. “Nemi. Is she secure?”
“She’s in my quarters,” Jaskya gasped, struggling to keep pace, Orik clutched against her chest. “She’s been working on a backdoor into the grid.”
“A backdoor?” Tarkis’s brow furrowed, a moment of surprise cutting through his fury. “What kind of backdoor?”
Before Jaskya could explain, a concussion blast ripped through the lower levels. The entire segment of the Apex shuddered, a deep groan resonating through the walls. Dust sifted from the ceiling. A squad of armed men, clad in dark, unbranded combat gear, rounded the far corner of the hall, their rifle barrels spitting fire.
“Incoming!” Tarkis roared, shoving Jaskya and Orik behind a massive, uninstalled ventilation unit that lay half-assembled in the hall. He drew a sleek, compact energy pistol from his jacket, its muzzle flaring blue-white as he returned fire. The air filled with the acrid scent of ozone and burning dust.
One raider screamed, dropping his rifle, a black scorch mark blooming on his chest. Another fell, then another. Tarkis moved with clinical speed, ducking behind exposed I-beams. But more boots echoed down the concrete, half a dozen gunmen pressing forward in tandem.
“Mama, scared,” Orik whimpered, burying his face in her shoulder.
Jaskya’s mind raced, the memory of Nemi’s quiet determination flashing through her. The med-drip, the smart-grid. “Nemi!” she screamed into her comm-link, hoping the signal would cut through the chaotic din. “Are you there? I need you!”
Static crackled, then Nemi’s weak, but surprisingly clear voice. *“Jaskya? What’s happening? The network is screaming.”*
“Rival syndic troops! Lower levels! Can you… can you overload their optics? Anything you can do with the grid, *now*!” Jaskya pleaded, her voice hoarse, watching Tarkis take cover behind a fallen beam, snapping a fresh cell into his weapon. A slug seared past his ear, gouging the concrete behind him.
*“The environmental regulators… the ambient light sensors… I can shunt power, overload their visual systems,”* Nemi’s voice came, strained but focused. *“It’ll be temporary. Hold on.”*
A moment later, the ceiling strips flared with violent radiance. The harsh, clinical glow pulsed, surged, then detonated into searing cobalt. The assailants shouted in pain, clawing at their visors, their boots stumbling. Their precision fire dissolved into wild, undirected shots.
“Now!” Jaskya screamed to Tarkis, pointing toward the Panic Core door, a massive slab of obsidian-plated durasteel at the end of the hall. “Nemi bought us time!”
Tarkis didn’t hesitate. He seized Jaskya’s hand, pulling her and Orik in a desperate sprint towards the door. The flash washed out, the gunmen blinking through scorched retinas and raising their barrels. A sharp crack, like a whip, and Tarkis grunted, stumbling. Jaskya felt his grip slacken for a second. His shoulder. A dark stain bloomed rapidly on his pristine white jacket.
“Tarkis!” she cried out, her voice filled with a horror she hadn’t thought possible to feel for him.
He shoved her ahead, teeth bared against the shock. “Move! Get to the Core!”
They reached the Panic Core door. It was a seamless expanse, devoid of handles or keypads, opening only via biometric scan. Tarkis pressed his hand against a recessed panel, his blood smearing the surface. A soft whirring sound, and the colossal door began to retract, revealing a dimly lit, heavily reinforced chamber within. A true sanctuary, utterly divorced from the chaos outside.
He shoved Jaskya and Orik inside. “Go! Take Nemi. She’s already linked to this system.” His eyes, dark with pain, locked onto hers. “Shut down your goddamned failsafe.”
Jaskya stumbled, clutching Orik, looking back at him. The gunmen were closing in, boots pounding across the shattered tiles. Tarkis stood framed in the doorway, bleeding freely, his pistol aimed at the approaching horde. Blood streaked the seam of his jaw, his eyes locked on the charging squad.
“Tarkis, no!” she pleaded, knowing what he was about to do. Knowing she couldn't stop him.
With a harsh grunt, he slammed his palm against the external closing panel. The heavy blast doors groaned, then slammed shut on pneumatic pistons, sealing them inside the Panic Core. From the outside.
